It's a fair comment, though.
I think the population of Europe is about 850 million, and there have not been as many world champions from there as (say) America. Mind you, the modern sport of boxing has been essentially an American sport with the 'world' governing bodies etc largely based or run from there.
I can't help noticing, however, just to make an innocent comparison that the population of Pakistan is 169 million though, and if you look back through history I can't think of a single Pakistani fighter who made it to world champion ...... and before people start talking about Amir Khan, he was brought up in Britain, learnt to box in Britain, got his amateur career started in Britain, fought for Britain in the Olympics and is now trained by an American, in no way does that make him a pakistani boxer.
Just to widen the debate, with the exception of a few cricketers, I can't think about too many examples of pakistani domination or contribution to historical world sporting excellence????
Yeah, a bit of a stupid thread really. America has produced more than its own share of totally overrated fighters. And suddenly 'Europe' is to blame. Like Europe is some vast independant nation of its own? Weird thinking. Hype is hype and it can happen anywhere.
There are many such as Amir Con, Murray ( always knew had didnt have a snowball's chance in hell against Mitchell ) and Kessler. Nathan Cleverly, not sure what to make of him yet but The Black Russian is better and would beat him imo.
Amir Khan is the most overrated fighter ive seen in the past 5 years or so..
How can u say naz wasnt elite?! he was around along time and didnt duck anyone, had alot of fights against top oppostion johnson, kelly, medina etc, naz only got beat once against mab who was probly the best about, morales got beat by mab would you not class morales as elite?! As for hatton again why not elite? He again boxed alot of top guys and again never ducked anyone infact he always chased the best, ok he got blasted by a top form pacman, but hatton put up a good fight against mayweather and the ref was up floyds arse! Hatton only got beat by the best two fighters on the planet, no shame in that! and i dont think that should take anything away from his career/legacy
Although this was a blatant wind-up thread aimed at Brits, it is kind of ironic that six years later a bunch of Eastern Europeans are considered among the very best fighters in the world.
Wlad
Golovkin
Kovalev
Lomanchenko
With a bunch right behind them
Beterbiev
Postol
The entire Cruiserweight divison
All bums, just lucky they came around after America stopped trying to produce good boxers.
The klitschkos are just born in the weird places due to their fathers millitary career, I would say they still have to count as ukranians and therefore eastern europeans, wladimir isnt a kazak and vitali isnt from Kyrgyzstan just because they were born there. Bruce willis was born in germany after all.
Lots of very talented Ukrainian and Russian fighters coming up:
Gvozdyk
Ponomarev
Spyrko
Baranchyk
Gassiev
Magomedov
Bivol
Salamov
Tedeev
Bektemirov
Khytrov
Derevyanchenko
Nonsense, poppycock, claptrap, balderdash, silliness, folderol, hooey, and stupidity!
well i would say where their parents are from is a rather big one and where they lived a lot of their life.... where you are born is the mostly irrelevant factor in my opinion, do you really consider someone like Bruce Willis to be german? The football player rio mavuba was born at sea, where is he from then :S
