No, what is the point? Marquez was the better boxer and now he is the one to be able to get a stoppage. This is the best way to punctuate the series. Finish on the high point. Many think he is the better boxer and now he has the dramatic destruction of his foe. It is the perfect narrative.

I'm stupified. That was an awesome fight. I'm proud for JMM, though - he deserved some retribution after three fights. I don't think Manny's done, though - he was boxing very well up until he ate that right.

I'm so happy for JMM.
He has been screwed by the judges twice vs Pacquaio (I do believe Pac won the 2nd fight), so for him to get such a brutal victory is fantastic. So happy for the guy. JMM is a great champion and deserves this win.

Marquez wasn't joking. He wasn't trying to win rounds. He was losing the fight, he just wanted to end it. But Pac walked into that. He is usually much better than to make such a sloppy move.
Jesus Christ. Marquez should retire now and know that he destroyed the reign of the best fighter in the world.
Marquez wasn't even competitive when he fought the best fighter in the world ;)
Mayweather is a part time fighter who wouldn't even fight Manny. He isn't the best fighter in the world as far as I am concerned. Also, Marquez wasn't even attuned to anything beyond 135 at that time. He has done it far more carefully in the last year or so.
Pac was the best in his division and otherwise Floyd is irrelevant. Prior to tonight Pac was the best fighter in the world. I give little time to anyone who fights once a year and cherry picks to fill up the coffers.

I'd venture the point is boxing history. It's been quite awhile since we had two boxers who fought such an interesting series. These two are destined to be one of the great duos mentioned in boxing lore. I honestly believe that Pac could easily win a rematch - well, maybe not easily, but envisioning him winning another is easy to do. He looked great before that KO

But as mentioned earlier - he got caught twice with big rights. And I was a little concerned that Marquez looked to be letting the rounds slip. However, the first right he didn't see as it winged round his guard, the killer shot he was out of position.
Loved the finish ;D

Watching the interviews afterwards on the Top Rank feed Arum obviously wants to make the fight again and Manny is definitely going to fight again.

Pac was winning the fight and Marquez at times was looking slow, it was Marquez getting busted up too. Pac has too much youth and if he would only have boxed more sensibly could have outboxed this version of Marquez. Marquez likely knew it and was wasn't joking when he said he would be looking for the bombs. I thought it was bluster, but credit to the man, he was for real.
Marquez at 40 is only going to get older and slower and so in terms of legacy think he should leave on a high. Careers have to end and Marquez is already on extended time, the boxing earlier on in the fight suggested so too.

I'm so pissed at IamInuit for being right every time, I'm thinking about calling him out!
Do you have to be right 99.9% of the time?
A terrific fight with an emphatic answer to who is the better fighter, tonight anyway.
-
Re: Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez IV - Saturday night fight/chat thread
That turned out to be worth staying up for, great fight, Marquez showing the heart of a champion, and doing what he needed to do to win.
Night folks, see you next week for Donaire vs Arce.
cheers

Manny should should have rematched and battered Bradley. As much for mental as physical approach.
I say forget a 5th rematch. No need.

It's a good point. JMM hasn't really gotten the respect - or the money - that he's deserved for most of his career. I don't think anyone will argue his legacy though - he's an ATG without any possible doubt. A rematch with Pac at this point would be interesting, thought, at least to me. I don't think any possible outcome could slight JMM's legacy, no matter the outcome. And at this point, I think we maybe should worry more about Pac's legacy...

Erm....okay.
Something just galls me when the so called 'best boxer' is practically retired whilst the other one who people claim is the best was active and winning without suckerpunches gets downplayed. Beaing undefeated, but as active as a sloth shouldn't really count.
Pacquiao, at the least was the best active fighter in boxing prior to today. Marquez crushed him. This is relevant and meaningful. Mayweather on the other hand is not meaningful nor relevant at the moment. He has no fight on the horizon, last fought an age ago, and wouldn't fight the best active fighter on the planet. His most recent opponent also looked shot in his last fight and Mayweather lost several rounds to him. I think Mayweather is half shot now, personally speaking of course.
Sure, Marquez lost to Mayweather, but Mayweather wouldn't even make weight and was calling out a LW with no experience of bulking up. It is disrespectful for anyone to even mention Mayweather in the triumivate equation. Marquez and Pac did it somewhat honestly. Mayweather is just a punk. He cheated against Marquez and wouldn't fight Manny.

Both still lose to Mayweather - I still think Mayweather was very respectful in his fight with Marquez - in the sense that he was in against a lighter, slower fighter, he never really went too hard on him. He never needed to.

Re: Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez IV - Saturday night fight/chat thread
All I can say is FINALLY the result Marquez deserved. Thought that he looked a little tense in the first two rounds, which Pac edged, then when he put him down in the third I was screaming at him to move in for the kill whilst Pac was clearly dazed but Marquez was ice cold. When Pac started to find his rhythm again in the 5th and 6th I thought the window of opportunity might have closed and that we were destined for another close, controversial decision in Manny's favour, but what a punctuation mark Marquez left on the canvas of the MGM. Just hope he hangs em' up now and rides off into the sunset as he should. One of my favourite fighters ever, so glad he finally got the win he deserved, especially knowing how much it meant to him. It's almost 7am here but I'm not sure I can sleep, way too pumped up! ;D

One thing I can't help but think about - how much would Emanuel Steward have loved that fight? I missed him tonight a lot.

Re: Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez IV - Saturday night fight/chat thread
If Mayweather could have stopped Marquez I am sure he would have done so. He didn't make weight for the fight and was in with a man who had no experience beyond LW.
Mayweather beat Marquez by a landslide, but it was a dodgy fight in terms of Marquez not being a WW and Mayweather not meeting his side of the deal.
The Marquez who fought Manny a year ago would have done far better against Mayweather and definitely so against this older Mayweather. Mayweather has lost his legs now. Marquez bulked up properly and acclimatised to the weight. In other words Marquez had learned from the Mayweather fight and done his homework better.
The argument I have here is simply that I don't consider Mayweather the best active fighter in the world as he is a part time boxer. I have no issues with the Marquez/Mayweather fight result, but do believe Marquez is far better than the result suggests and I proffer the reasons of acclimatisation and cheating as partial explanations.
That fight is what it is though. Prior to this Manny was the best fighter in the world and he has been destroyed.

I think a Mayweather/Marquez fight would be a much more competitive affair at this point. I'd pay to see it ;D
