Re: How Would Ali Have Done In 90s
Bloody good thread.
Holyfield gives most problems to Ali IMO. The warrior would never stop coming forward and push him all the way, but would need a knockout to win, don't see anyone KO'ing Ali.
I think someone mentioned a few pages back (took me ages to go through the whole thread, can't remember who!) mention that Bowe/Lewis could knock out Ali as they were about 240", I dissagree, Holy went in the ring with both az well as a forty year old George, remember him saying somewhere that George hit harder than the lot.
Still think Lewis' height and reach gives Ali a few problems though.

:coolclick: and yes people keep on about Bowe at 240 but he was rocked so many times vs Holyfield and was put down against him and he was over 2 stone heavier than Holyfield and people need to realize that Bowe was good inside fighter but not great outside one as that was proved when Tubbs out boxed him and same with Golota and as for Lewis as i've said multiple times in this thread he let smaller guys give him trouble with there jabs and is also easy to hit and has been rocked by lesser man aka Gary Mason Shannon Briggs Ray Mercer hell Mercer had Lewis hurt so many times that i can't even count it on my fingers and toes ;D and was also hurt by smaller Holyfield who was out of his prime and almost won the decision in 2nd fight and Bruno who was slow and bit robotic was out jabbing Lewis easily and rocked him quite few times Ali out jabs Lewis easily and wins decision.
Re: How Would Ali Have Done In 90s
You forget to mention though that all of those fighters that gave Lewis trouble were beaten.

Yes but should Lewis have been out jabbed by much smaller Mercer and getting rocked all over place ?? no did 40+ Holmes give Mercer a boxing lesson ?? yes and i mean come on he got out jabbed by slow robotic Bruno if Lewis is great and can beat Ali as some are saying here he shouldn't of got gift decision against Mercer and been out jabbed by Bruno
Lewis is too easy to hit and prime Ali would made Lewis look very slow and and quite silly Lewis would struggle to land anything on Ali because he is so quick and Ali would tag Lewis all night.
And heres something for you Memphis didn't Lewis refuse to fight Holmes because Lewis stated= this guy can jab and Holmes was 40+ jeez so if he didn't want to fight Holmes because he thought he was jab would be to much of threat imagine what Ali would of done to Lewis with his jab ??
Re: How Would Ali Have Done In 90s
I think the only fighters in any era that might give Ali a few problems would be Jack Johnson and Lennox Lewis.
Any agressive come forward fighter would be an easy fight for a prime Ali.
Re: How Would Ali Have Done In 90s
That's the problem when comparing fighters from different era's, people look at specific fights to prove their point, such as the Cooper knockdown fight, then saying a Tyson would knock him down quicker cos he was bigger and faster than Cooper, neglecting to mention that Ali fought even bigger and stronger guys than Tyson without being knocked down.
The same can be said about Lewis, people mention Mccall and Rahman as reason's why he wouldn't do well against Ali or George, but he just didn't bring his A game to those fight's for some reason or another. If we try and compare champions from different era's and speculate how they would do against each other, we should always assume that they would bring their A game to each of these hypothetical fights, as they would know beforehand their opponent will be top class.

I think Alis knock down against Cooper just showes that if you dont respect your opponent any fighter can get hurt if caught right.
Clay was giving no respect, just waiting for the 5th round so his predictinon would be right.
Re: How Would Ali Have Done In 90s
Before the Cooper fight they ran in hyde park It was from speakers corner to about where the Hilton is by the Horse track. Id been Boxing 18 months and watching it got thinking Ive got to get fit like that and thinking fucking hell.
Re: How Would Ali Have Done In 90s
Did you ever get to beat the horses, scrap?
Re: How Would Ali Have Done In 90s
I thought it was Duran that beat horses?
Re: How Would Ali Have Done In 90s
sparking 'em aint as impressive as out running 'em
is it?
Re: How Would Ali Have Done In 90s
I say sparkin 'em over out running 'em.... 8)
Re: How Would Ali Have Done In 90s
In faiirness the horse wasnt full gallup, but it was still impressive. where as being in the same gym as Lewis I was never impressed, bit one paced one dimensional nothing to excite.
Re: How Would Ali Have Done In 90s
Lennox was a good fighter, the best of his generation, but I think Ali was cut from a different cloth as a fighter. Take away some of the sainthood that social revisionists are now ladling on Ali and just look at him as a fighter in his prime. Big guy, even today, 230 lbs and 6'3", fast as a middleweight with a style that has never been successfully emulated, especially at heavyweight. he had every punch in the book, great reflexes and great chin and heart. He also has the mental strength that true champions have. MOst people would agree that Ali as a fighter is an all time great and is one of the best heavyweights ever.
Who was a round in the 90's apart from Lewis, Bowe and Holyfield. Ali beats everyone else easily. Bowe is too fat and stupid to get near a prime Ali and I see him getting blitzed much like Cleveland Williams. Yes, Lewis as big and fast but so was Ernie Terrell and Ali literally played with him. I know Lewis is better than terrell but if anyone thinks that the size of Lewis or Bowe would give Ali problems is sorely mistaken. Ali has better skills than lennox, a bterr chin and trusted his chin more than Lewis did.
Holyfield, I think gives Ali a tough fight, but not life and death like Frazier gave him. Its a question of styles and I think Ali outpoints Evander all day. There's no way Holyfield is going to stop Ali and I cant really see him outboxing, outhustling or outworking prime Ali.
Tyson was finished in the 90's so i'm not going to count him - though i think 80's Tyson v Ali is mouth watering.
