~ Quarry Plans To Try A New 'Kick', In Full-Contact Karate ~

Mike Quarry, had returned back him to California in October, following several
years of getting the eye-brow over his left-eye slashed in numerous bouts.

Following an 'important win' over highly-touted Mike Rossman on September 30th,
Mike decided it was time for surgery, to repair the excessive 'scar-tissue' on his
left eye-brow.

"I moved to Westminster, California. I needed a break from Boxing as well. Now it's
been 5-Weeks since my plastic-surgery, and I'm thinking about a few other things
in my life now, other than boxing."

"I plan to get involved with the 'Karate Masters' and engage in the sport of
'Full Contact Karate' here in California."

I plan to start training at the 'Main Street Gym' in Los Angeles for a few weeks. And at
the same time I will enroll with the 'Karate Masters'. I already have experience in Karate,
and plan to go thru each level."

"I will probably have my 1st-Match in March 1976."

The #10 World Light-Heavyweight contender Mike Quarry will make his 'official'
Pro Debut as a 'Full-Contact Karate' fighter in 2-Weeks.

Quarry {Age; 25 years old} will take on Ray Alegria on April 9th at the Los Angeles
Sports Arena in a fight-card with '5' other matches.

The bout will be scheduled for 4-Rounds. Ray Alegria is ranked in the Top 10 at
Light-Heavyweight in the 'Full-Contact Karate' division.

~ Mike Quarry and Ray Alegria Battle To 4-Round ~

In the Co-Feature of the evening in the 'Martial-Arts Spectacular' ~ Mike Quarry and Ray Alegria
battled to a 4-Round Draw in a somewhat listless 4-Round match.

The bout, which was a 'Full-Contact Karate' match, was lacking in action during the first 3-Rounds
as both combatants neutralized each other.

In the Final Round {Round 4} > both fighters attacked with more offense, and each landed with
left-jabs, right-crosses and a few kick-jabs.

"It was a good Pro Debut. I learned a lot, and had to watch out for Ray's windmill-kicks. Those
Baby's can hurt you bad."

"I give myself a { B- } in the performance level. I could have been better during the early
Rounds."

"It is fairly simple. The 'Tournaments" are set up with '8' participants. You have a 'First Round'
match, then a 'Semi-Final] and then the 'Finals'. You have to win both of your preliminary bouts
to reach the Finals. This is all done on the same day."

"You have about 2-Hours between Matches. Everything moves very fast in these Tournaments."

"You go '4' {3-Minute Rounds} And the '3' Judges score the bout on the overall performance. All
hits {strike points} have to be above the belt. Grabs and throws are prohibited. If you do that,
you will get a '2' warnings, before a Point is deducted."

The Tournaments are set up with a { $10,000 } total purse. The Tournament Winner will end up
getting { $5000 }. The runner-up gets { $2500 }. The other { $2500 } is split up between the
other '6' Karate Fighters that were eliminated."

"It is a fast-action series, and they have events every other week. The 'Karate Masters' just signed
a Television Deal, and they plan to have '6' Tournaments televised. They are just getting started,
but 'Full Contact Karate' is growing fast in California. I just may switch careers completely, and give
up on boxing as a Professional."

After a few 'Full-Contact Karate' tournaments, Mike decided to return to Professional
Boxing, but Mike still 'dabbled' in Karate in the mean-time.

In very late-April 1976,

Mike signed a deal with Fight-Promoter - Paul Chavez out of New Mexico to come back
in early-May for a bout in Albuquerque.

Mike Quarry {Age; 25 years, 2 months} will return the Boxing Ring after a 7-Month lay-off.

Mike who took time of to have surgery to repair excessive scar-tissue over his left-eye. Mike
also ventured into 'Full-Contact Karate' in California for 3-Months as well.

Mike is set to return on Tuesday ~ May 11th at the Civic Auditorium in Albuquerque against
Nathaniel 'Nat' Gates.

Fight Promoters > Paul Chavez and Bruce Trampler had signed Quarry up 2-Weeks ago, but
with an 'un-named opponent'. There was a 'scramble' to get a decent club-fighter or quality
journeyman to put in against the 'returning' World Class Light-Heavyweight, and one who
would be approved by the Boxing Commission.

"I knew that I would be back here in Albuequerque. I 'love' this town. It is the best place to
prepare both mentally and physically for a bout. The high-altitude is good for training and
it makes you tough."

and {Sopapillas} are the best in America."

"They have brought in 'Nat' Gates from Sarasota, Florida as my opponent. I used to spar with

~ Mike Quarry Wins Controversial Decision ~

~ Mike Quarry Wins In Close Scrap ~

#12 World-ranked Mike Quarry won a 'controversial' 10-Round Split-Decision over 'scrappy' Nat Gates
in Albuquerque.

The bout started off slow, as the first 3-Rounds saw limited action, as Mike Quarry threw an occasional
'one-two' to the body of his tall-and-lanky opponent, but Quarry's attack was 'weak.

On the other side, Nat Gates did little, as he 'posed and preened' thru the first 3-Rounds.

But in Round 4, Nat Gates 'attacked' and rocked Quarry with several 'long-range' right-hands to the head.
Gates then 'raked' Quarry with a series of right-hands, and had his opponent 'groggy' throughout the
middle of the session.

But by the end of the Round, Quarry had cleared his head, and started to come back with his own
right-hands as well.

Thru the middle-Rounds both fighters exchanged and 'jarred' each other with long right-hands to
the head, in 'even' action.

Quarry had the 'slight-edge' in Rounds 7 and 8, as he moved inside and scored with right-hand leads to
Gates body, and then working his opponents mid-section with steady but light punches.

Behind on points, Nat Gates put in a 'good effort' over the last 2-Rounds {Rounds 9 and 10}, as he
landed with long-range left-hands and looping-rights into Quarry's face.

Fight Promoter - Paul Chavez and Boxing Matchmaker - Bruce Trampler have stated that they
have '3' bouts lined up here for the 25 year-old Quarry who is embarking on a comeback
after a 7-Mnth lay-off.

"Mike is a good draw here. We pull in a minimum of 1800 when he is the 'Main Event', which
gives us some room to offer better Fight Purses and put on a 5-Bout Fight Card."

young kid who is 'raw', but one who throws hard-punches. He's got a record of > 18-2-2 with

~ Quarry Scores Speedy Win In 10, Defeats 'Chi-Town' Warfield ~

Mike Quarry won a Unanimous 10-Round Decision over Chicago 'power-puncher' Chuck Warfield in a
fast-action bout.

There was 'fast-action' over the first 2-Rounds, as Quarry moved in quickly on Warfield, and scored
with fast 'left-right' one-two's on the big 'right-hand hitter' from Chicago. Chuck Warfield pressed
forward, but threw very few punches.

Quarry used a variety of left-hands during Rounds 3 and 4, as he kept dazzling his opponent with
fast punches from long-range.

In Rounds 5 and 6, Quarry opened-up by coming inside and working his opponents body with a
steady 'left-right' attack, as well as 'shaking' Warfield with several solid right-hands to the chin.

In Round 7, the 'action' slowed down, as Quarry spent much of the Round using his quick-footwork
to circle the plodding Chicagoan while lowering his hands and 'baiting' his opponent to throw a
head-punch. As Quarry jabbed and moved, Warfield looked to be tiring.

In Round 8 {best Round of the bout}, Warfield came out swinging, and finally 'tagged' Quarry with
his 'power' right-hand, jarring Mike and sending him backwards and into a Corner. Trying to take
advantage of his opportunity, Warfield moved in and attacked with everything he had left in 'the tank'.

But Quarry was able to 'ride-with-the-punches', and weathered the brief storm, as Warfield punched
himself out.

In Round 9, it was Quarry who landed the cleaner punches by scoring with left-hooks and
quick right-hand 'snaps' to the face, as Warfield had slowed down to a walk.

In some late-Round excitement, Mike Quarry backed to the Ropes and dropped his hands down
'low' and let Warfield have a 'free' opening at his body. Warfield obliged, and threw about 15-Punches
into Quarry's body.

Quarry took the punches without even a 'grimace' or 'flinch'.

In Round 10 {Final Round}, Quarry used his quick-footwork and fast-hands to 'lightly-pepper' his
frustrated opponent from the outside.

~ Quarry 'Clobbers' Foe By TKO In 5 ~

Mike Quarry exhibiting new found punching-power, dropped Sylvester Wilder '6-Times' en-route
to a TKO win @ 2:41 of Round 5.

Quarry came out 'briskly' in the Opening Round, and 'razed' his opponent with a series of left-hooks
that had the Cleveland fighter backing away and covering up.

Sensing that his opponent had no offense, Quarry tee'd off on Wilder in Round 2, and late in the
session dropped him with a 'double' left-hook to the jaw.

Quarry continued with his 'blitz' in Round 3, and again dropped Wilder with a 'double' left-hook to
the jaw.

With a near 'defenseless' opponent in front of him, Quarry showed good 'sportsmanship' and laid
back using very little offense for the rest of Round 3, and again in Round 4.

In Round 5 {Final Round}, Quarry stepped up the pace, and un-leashed a series of combinations
that had Wilder down at the {0:45 Mark}.

Wilder was up at the '3-Count' and wanted to continue. Quarry obliged, and moved in close {inside}
and worked over Wilder with left-hooks and short right-hands. Wilder finally went down at the
{1:55 Mark} after absorbing the punches.

But again Wilder rose, and wanted to continue. Again Quarry moved in, and tagged Wilder with
several left-hands underneath, eventually driving his opponent into a Corner.

Then Quarry came in with a 'chopping' right-hand, dropping Wilder at the {2:41 Mark}.

The '3-Knockdown Rule' was in effect, and the bout was automatically halted.

by Ken Norton.

But that hasn't ended Jerry's career in Boxing. Jerry recently signed a contract with CBS-TV
to provide 'color commentary' for televised boxing events. And he also became younger brother
Mike's 'new' Trainer.

name, following a 'great' win over Mike Rossman."

"I told Mike, you should quit boxing 'now' and go out on top. His left-eye {eye-brow} was a mess from

like a teenager."

they sold the house, and Mike got a nice 'up-scale' apartment in Westminster, California."

Mentally, that was great for Mike, as it helped with his mental sharpness."

"When Mike made the announcement that he was coming back, we got in touch with Aileen Eaton
at the Olympic Auditorium, Mickey Davies in Orange County, and Don Fraser at The Forum. They
are all interested in putting Mike on as the 'Main Event' in upcoming bouts."

"I really wanted Mike to quit at the end of 1975. He accomplished his goal of re-establishing his
name, following a 'great' win over Mike Rossman."

"Mike was going through some personal issues at the end of 1975 as well. he had a 'bad marriage',
and he and his wife had 'separated'. In early-1976 {after 3-years of marriage} she moved back home
to Massachusetts."

"It was hard on Mike. They had purchased a home together in San Luis Obispo. After the 'split-up',
they sold the house, and Mike got a nice 'up-scale' apartment in Westminster, California."

"And Mike got involved with the 'Karate Masters', and participated in 'Full-Contact Karate matches.
Mentally, that was great for Mike, as it helped with his mental sharpness."

"When Mike made the announcement that he was coming back, we got in touch with Aileen Eaton
at the Olympic Auditorium, Mickey Davies in Orange County, and Don Fraser at The Forum. They
are all interested in putting Mike on as the 'Main Event' in upcoming bouts."

from an ongoing 'viral infection', and had a lack of proper training regimen."

"Boxing is my livelihood. It always has been, and always will. As for getting a chance at the Title. I think that
WBA Champion - Victor Galindez is more 'suited' for my style. He's a slugger and I'm a boxer. That would be
an entertaining bout for sure. On WBC Champion - John Conteh. He's good, but he is too much of a 'technician'.
I think our styles are similar, and that it would be an 'odd' match-up with probably little excitement."

Mike Quarry goes for his 4th-Straight win in his 1976 comeback tour, and '6th-Straight' overall.

Billy 'Nitro' Freeman is another one of those 'tough' Philadelphia club-fighters who comes to fight.

Billy can punch a little, and has a decent right-hook.

~ Quarry Extinguishes 'Nitro' Freeman In 8 ~

Mike Quarry put out Billy 'Nitro' Williams at {1:05 of Round 8} in front of a small crowd a the
Sports Arena in Orlando.

Quarry got off to a smooth start, as he boxed brilliantly over the first 3-Rounds against the
Philadelphia club-fighter, as Quarry scored with quick left-jabs and fast right-hands to his
opponents face.

In Round 4, the action got heated, as both traded blows, with each scoring with some solid
punches. Billy Freeman got Quarry's attention late in the Round, when he caught him with a
big right-hook that jarred him backwards.

The visiting Freeman also had a good 5th-Round, as he out-worked Quarry along the Ropes, by
pinning the clever-boxer, and firing short-punches on the inside.

Quarry went to boxing during Rounds 6 and 7, as he peppered Freeman with fast-combinations
from the outside. Freeman pressed, but he started to slow down in the footwork department,
and his hand-speed evaporated.

At the end of Round 7, the Philly-fighter was breathing heavily at the Bell.

In Round 8, it didn't take Mike Quarry long to figure out that his opponent was 'out-of-gas'. Quarry
went to work right away, and blasted a series of punches Freeman's mid-section, sending him
backwards, and into the Ropes at the {0:30 Mark}.

Quarry then picked his punches, before delivering a 'pin-point' {left-right-left} to the jaw, dropping
Freeman on his right-side. Freeman tried to get up at the 'coun-of-7, but he fell over and was
counted out at the {1:05 Mark}.
