A prime isn't at a preconceived age.
A prime is just when yo hit it.
Tyson's style is a style that doesn't make for a long "prime".
He was a slugger, a 3 round basher.
He wasn't made to dance for 12 rounds & steal the fight in the last round by some brilliantly orchestrated moves.
He was a "floor it" kind of guy.
They never have a long career.

IMO Bruce Seldon had the best left jab in history... in his prime.
I watched him left-jab guys across the ring when he was coming up.
I mean, knock them GOOFY :rolleyes3: with a "set-up" punch.
HIs left jab was my favorite.

What quality fighter did Seldon beat with his jab?!?!...Riddick Bowe, Ah NO!, Oliver McCall, NO Again!,Musta Been Tony Tubbs, afraid NOT....I guess your referring to the Joe (I swallowed a table) Hipp who couldn't get out of the way of any punch..."Greatest Jab in History" LMAO, the history of what? If you basing Tyson's chances against Holmes because he beat a weak chinned and even weaker hearted Seldon.... your nuts....

Re: prime tyson vs prime lewis
Tyson's prime was over by the time he fought Frank Bruno, there was no jab at all.
Let's see. The Tyson that fought that Jheri Curl person against Lennox Lewis that went on that tear after Holyfield.
I would pick Tyson. Since even then Lewis had weaknesses, the Heavyweight division just wasn't talented enough to expose them imo.

no its called truth i cant see how im embarrasing myself by saying u cant be out of ur prime at 23 or 24 physically u cant be mentally yes of course but not physically for boxer he didnt have any injuries or anything like that so i dont see how he can be past it and he wasnt past it like people make out he was koing everybody in 3 rounds or less in 1995 1996 he just met one tough cookie who could take his punches and was better fighter aka holyfield god why cant people admit he met his match every boxer meets there match sometime or another tyson was good fighter but he met his match so why cant people admit it and stop saying out of his prime blah blah and remember holyfield was past it more than tyson losing to bowe badly he looked shot and he was older than tyson and if people argue about tysons mentality then what about holyfield having heart troubles and losing badly to moorer and to bowe surely that affects boxers confidence

Re: prime tyson vs prime lewis
Tyson fans always say the same thing. "None of his losses came in his prime" But honestly when was the guys prime? I mean listening to some Tyson fans its like the guy had a 18 month period of time where he was in his mythical unbeatable prime. You can't have it both ways. Either the guy's fragile mental and emotional state kept him from ever capitalizing on his great physical gifts or he simply was never as great as many thought and lost fights when he was still very close to his best. Regardless you can't ignore what a fragile psyche Tyson had. All the "if he'd done this or done that" is crap. Tyson's personality makeup led him to making all of the bad decisions that culminated in the tailspin his career endured. Being a fighter takes a very particular type of person. Focus, discipline and dedication are just as important as great hand speed, power and chin. I mean honestly you make the same argument for lots of fighters. Take Bowe for instance. The night he first became champ he looked like the greatest HW of all time. So hey if the guy just could passed on a couple of cupcakes and spent a little more time in the gym he would never have lost. The point is he didn't have the dedication to be a great HW and his career went to shit. Tyson obviously didn't have the desire or focus and ultimately was missing a big part of what makes great champions. Heart, Determination and an almost masochistic work ethic.

He knocked out Robin Givens in his prime.
Lewis never did.

That is where you are wrong. The thing is that Tyson accomplished all that was possible after beating Spinks and he had happened to be very young at the time. Though still in his physical priome, his mental prime there was really no reason to go on. So basically after Spinks "what was he fightiong for"
So for you to say Tyson "obviously" had no heart and desire etc is all bullshit! He just accomplished all you could and had no more mountains to climb. But he kept fighting, got beat. That simple he had NO motivation after that point.

Re: prime tyson vs prime lewis
I dont care who he fought or didnt ,
It was just amazing to see his speed and strength, there has never been a fighter looking as good as that in the ring, you could just tell back then he was invincible.
Tyson by Ko

Re: prime tyson vs prime lewis
well i havent really seen anything special when i watch tyson fight spinks either all i see is spinks was scared shitless before he even entered the ring tyson had decent power good headmovment and good speed ill give him that if u guys and girls like his skills i have no problem with that its just ive never really liked him and i dont believe in this unbeatable nonsense either

Re: prime tyson vs prime lewis
I Think Tyson Is A Badass even though i dont like the inside fighters but he is one of my favorites.
-
Re: prime tyson vs prime lewis
Re vanchilds comments... looks like this post has died but i liked your comments..shows some thoughfulness.....mindyou...im drunk...
I think the hardest thing for tyson was the style..the upper body bob and weave takes HUGE energy and is really hard to maintain as you age and fights go into later rounds. What about this though, how good did buster douglas look in his tyson fight?? he was really good!! fight of his life , i think that night he could have beaten anyone. He looked good, fast, tireless. Admittedly tyson was a mess mentally but still credit where credit is due.

Re: prime tyson vs prime lewis
tyson backs lewis up all night long just like he did with smith, tuckerand green and tucker was better than lewis.tyson wins easy UD if not mid KO
-
Re: prime tyson vs prime lewis
Tyson was lucky that Lewis is a bit older so in other words he was past his prime as well.
-
Re: prime tyson vs prime lewis
Everyone always go's on about how Tyson never fought neone like Lewis in his prime, and its the same vice versa....A prime Tyson was FAR better then anyone Lewis ever fought and i think he would be too much. Tyson mid to late rounds stoppage.

ray mercer was bit similar to tyson but mercer had better chin than tyson but tyson had alot more headmovement and speed than mercer but at end of the day i think lewis would win but who knows anything can happen in boxing

Yeah I second that! I still feel Tyson around 87/88 KO's Lewis

Re: prime tyson vs prime lewis
prime tyson as in 19 straight KO's? youngest heavyweight champ ever?
against prime lennox lewis?
just my 2 cents...
lewis is counting lights in under 4.

He didn't win 4 rounds. Won 2 or 3 and had a share of a few.
It's a very good point you make though!

yea what im trying say tyson was in his prime against tucker now tucker hurt tyson in first round and made a fight of it maybe winning 4 or 3 like u say but he was 6 foot 5 same as lewis but difference is lewis is better boxer than tucker and surely lewis would make good fight of it aswell possibly winning a decision or he gets caught and gets koed thats how i see it going

I just wish we could've seen them fight in their primes. I just see Tyson catching up with Lewis at some stage!
If you say Lewis could do what Tucker did (or better) I am sure that Tyson could do what McCall or Rahman did ;)
Great thread ;D ;D

good point i like debating this :) rahman ko was lewis getting cocky doubt lewis would get cocky with man like tyson as for mccall ko i think they should let lewis go on but mccall and lewis both went for rights but unfortunatly for lewis mccall landed his quicker but anyway this is how i see it going tyson early or if lewis can stay away and use his reach and height lewis late because of his extra strength and size

now Im undecided. you've shaken my resolve  ;D

Re: prime tyson vs prime lewis
PRIME Tyson was like a force of nature - speed, power, combinations, head movement ........ he was elusive and did not go looking for the one punch blowout. He was also the most aggressive opening rounds fighter I have ever seen. Period.
Lewis - in my opinion only - was a superb athlete who happened to be a boxer. Speed, coordination, reflexes, confidence etc, but I still don't think he was ever a natural.
At the end of it all - despote what happened to Tyson later on, nobody could ever say he had a poor chin, unlike Lennox.
That's why I think Tyson would win.

Lewis has only ever been down twice in his entire career ( both times when he was overconfident and he won rematches ) Whereas Tyson , Holyfield and Bowe have been down more regulary . I cant say Lewis has a bad chin when he takes Rudducks , Tuas , Tysons and Klitsckos best shots flush without budging

ruddock never hit him really tyson only hit him good in first round he took some good shots off mercer though reason why holyfield been down more is ebcause his been in many ways plus he was in with man who was 2 stone heavier if i was rating lewis chin out of 10 it would be 5

Re: prime tyson vs prime lewis
damn.. thats hard.
i'd have to say lewis only cuz lewis is just too damn big.
but tyson in his prime... one punch if lewis slipped and its over.
damn actually.. it could go either way. But the fight we saw was an obvious mismatch at that point in Mike's career 8)
-
Re: prime tyson vs prime lewis
With no doubt Tyson.
Almost all boxers, or should I say ALL BOXERS, he faced during his prime were taller than him. Mitch Green and others had faster hands and movement compared to Lewis and Tyson still got inside their defense with his lateral movements to finish them off.
Tyson has been the last boxer I have seen DOMINATING the heavyweight division. After him it seems boxers snatch the belts from each other like hot potatoes. There's no heavyweight now which you can say "Oh, nobody can beat him". When Tyson was on his prime fans were like "I wonder if this fight will make it past round 3".
