If LA makes the playoffs the Hurricanes get an extra 1st round pick in the draft
It's mind boggling to think of the teams that won't and PROBABLY won't make the playoffs this year.
San Jose will miss for the first time in like over 10 years (anything to do with stripping Jumbo Joe of the captaincy?). The Kings are looking doubtful, despite having the same core team that won Stanley Cups in 2 of the last 3 years (as I write this now, the kings are down 2-1 with under 5 minutes left while Winnipeg have gone to overtime. If LA lose, they're done). Boston are looking doubtful now. Florida has a strong team, so did Columbus, Dallas and Colorado - none of them are in the playoffs.
I like Nashville's chances this year, they have a lot of depth and a fire under their asses from being losers for so long. If the Senators make it, they can be a real threat. Since the all star break they have been the hottest team in the league. With Andrew Hammond in net, the Sens have gone an incredible 19-1-2
If the Detroit Red Wings had a Steve Yzerman-type, they would be at the top.
Stevie Y, still the greatest shot ever taken!

Serves them right, they publicly put the blame on Joe Thornton for their playoff woes, a guy who's done nothing but put up points consistently for 10 years for them and was nothing but class. They shit on him, striped him of his captaincy and now they're out of the playoffs for the first time since he started leading the franchise... go figure.
My Canes won last night and I watched the game with my surround sound on (I just recently hooked it up) it was EPIC! How did I ever watch sports on tv without it? The Canes have a ton of youth, lots of upside for the coming year, but we're certainly going ot have to lose some dead weight and Semin has to give 100% every game not just in games where he feels like doing work.
Thornton really got treated poorly, he's such a steady player and a true leader, he'll do anything you need as a player: score, pass, fight, screen the goalie....he does it all. Sure he's is getting older, but damn you don't treat a class player like him the way San Jose has.
Semin is just one of those guys who's never going to be consistent because he doesn't have the character to give it 100% every time out. Canes should get rid of him. I guess Carolina will have an 8.5% chance at getting Conor McDavid. That's not bad. There are some really good prospects in this draft so the chances of getting a solid player are pretty good.
This is who the Canes are supposedly going to draft

Makes sense. The Canes have no good right wingers, Semin was supposed to fill that void but he's a bum. Timo Meier could be another solid option, he's got good size already and is only going to get stronger.
McDavid and Eichel will go first and second, but then you got guys like Dylan Strome, Mitch Marner, Pavel Zacha, Hanifan... there's no shortage of good picks in the draft.
Never know what you're going to get with the Ruskies these days. No more "sure things" from there. When Semin is on his game he's amazing but it's inconsistent.
6 goals and 13 assists doesn't cut it when you're making as much as he does. He still has 3 years left in a 5 year 35 million dollar deal. If he keeps playing like he has this year it could be the worst contract since Scott Gomez's 7 year 51 million dollar deal.
Well the regular season for my adult league games is up, we finished the season 8-3-2 and were the ONLY team to give the #1 team any challenges. We're headed into the playoffs as the 3 seed. We've got a decent team that we're facing but we SHOULD win every game from here on out. I got an assist last night, but didn't do too terribly much as I was playing defense (which I hate when I can't check anyone).
Anyone have a favorite in the West or East they think will win it all....I think the New York Rangers are a good bet
My picks:
EAST
Ottawa over Montreal
Tampa Bay over Detroit
Islanders over Washington
And I'm picking the upset... Pittsburgh over New York
WEST
Minnesota over St. Louis
Nashville over Chicago
Winnipeg over the Ducks
Calgary over Vancouver
I got a surprise my team is not the 3 seed, we're the 2 seed...huge win last night then I guess. I'll keep yall updated on my hobby lol, I know you guys care.
And my picks
EAST
Habs over Sens
Tampa Bay over Detroit
Caps upset Isles
NYR sweep the Pens
WEST
Minnesota over St. Louis
Nashville over Chicago
Ducks over Jets
Calgary over Vancouver
Fuck yeah Playoffs start tonight, I don't know about you guys but I'm pumped as a motherfucker
GO SENS GO
Montreal up 1 on the Sens
Isles up 1 on the Caps
Flames up 1 on Vancouver
and the best match last night the Blackhawks came back from 3 down to win in double OT to go up 1 on the Preds.
It was a great night of hockey. Sens/Montreal was VERY fast paced, very chippy... it's going to be a very exciting, rough series. PK Subban got thrown out for a slash, a lot of people thought it was a bad call, I thought it was fair, it was a baseball swing that caused an injury so what can you do?
I was switching back and forth between that and the Isles/Caps game... Caps were a little flat but I thought they played ok. Ovechkin played his ass off, 8 shots on net and he was actually back checking and hitting anything that moved. Another good series but I felt the Islanders were a bad match up for them.
Caught Preds/Hawks, great 1st for the Preds and great 2nd for the Hawks... could have went either way. Gonna be a tight series IMO, still taking the Preds.
Missed Canucks/Flames, just caught the HLs.
Habs vs Sens could really get nasty depending on Ottawa's response to how rough Montreal were. I think Subban got a raw deal getting a misconduct for that slash, he should have gotten a penalty no doubt, but it wasn't bad enough to toss him.
Isles vs Caps will be interesting to see if the Caps can get anything to fall for them.
Hawks vs Preds was just goalies falling apart left and right!
Good games last night NYR vs Pens was a good game
Great hockey. Best series so far? Hawks/Preds. Close double overtime game 1, Preds kill them 6-2 game 2, it has the makings of a really wild series.
I'm still in shock that we have 5 teams in round 1. Shame that 4 playoff in the same round. That bugs me as a nationalist and fan. Really like how my home town got off. I dislike the Canucks and Vancouver. Thought the Sens might spoil it for the Habs but so far so good. The Jets are a pleasant surprise. Couldn't happen to a better fanbase.
So glad Edmonton won the lottery draft, as opposed to shitty Toronto (fuck Toronto). If McDavid lives up to his hype and comes anywhere near Crosby-level, we could see an incredible Hall-McDavid-Eberle line.
The organization is cursed... it's awesome!
Haven't had time to read or seen any hockey lately! but i hope Canucks doing good! And i hope ducks aint that bad either! Been busy watching Boxing and the Swedish championship in Hockey! Hope i catch up with you all soonish!
Canucks are 1-1 and Ducks are up 2-0 in the series, so not bad.
Sens are battling back! Series at 3-2, only need to win 2 straight to complete the epic comeback.
I was dead wrong picking the Jets over the Ducks and Pittsburgh over New York. Better luck next year for them.
I picked pretty well so far. Missed the call on the Preds & Blackhawks though...every other series I either got right or is still open to be right.
That Pittsburgh team is going to get blown up....got to have more than JUST Crosby out there. Malkin is great when he's healthy, but that team was beaten up before the playoffs and just never recovered.
On a NON-playoff note: As a Hurricanes fan I would NOT mind trading for Malkin. We've got a good draft pick lined up, but we've also got the Staal brothers who I'd be open to trading. We've already got Semin and if Malkin was to come over I think they would do great on a line together. Who do you think will land Geno?
I've damn near nailed the playoffs especially if Tampa beats the Red Wings
My picks took a massive shit, 0/3 so far in East (could be 0/4) and 2/4 in the West.
As far as Carolina... I'd say keep the Staals, hold on to the young talent like Skinner, Rask, Lindholm, Faulk, hold onto Cam Ward who's still an elite goalie, and take a flame thrower to everything else, especially Semin.
I think they're better off dealing Malkin. He an amazing talent but I think it's shown that having your hopes tied up with one or two superstars just doesn't cut it. If they could ditch Malkin for pieces to build a strong 2nd and 3rd line, I think it'd be in their best interest to do it.
HUGE game tonight Tampa Bay vs Detroit game 7....I kind of want Detroit to win as I'd like to see Datsyuk work his magic more. Kronwall being out is not going to help, but we'll just wait and see.
I want Tampa to win simply because they have a much better playoff record against the Habs, who I want to see eliminated immediately.
....oh and fyi I had my second to last game of the season in the losers bracket for my beer league team. We won the game pretty handily and I had 2 assists playing defense. I abhor playing defense when I can't check.....it takes all the fun out of playing defense!!! I used to line people up and Scott Stevens their asses!!! But I did play a fairly good game, stopped a few rushes, hit some long outlet passes, but my one real attempt on goal I scuffed a slapshot  . I'll be signing up for the summer season and maybe, just maybe, we can win the league then albeit without our goalie, backup goalie, and a few of our better players.
I still think the finals will be NYR and Anaheim although Chicago vs NYR would be great to see as well.
Fucking brilliant goal by Ovechkin
