Fight of the day
2007: Joe Calzaghe vs Mikkel Kessler
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJHmXzcLe4A
1899: James J. Jeffries W 25 (Sailor) Tom Sharkey, Coney Island, NY. Retains World Heavyweight Title.
1930: Fidel La Barba W 10 Kid Chocolate, NYC. By all accounts Kid Chocolate was schooled in front of 20,000 at MSG. He was a big favourite going in.
1933: (Slapsie) Maxie Rosenbloom W 15 Mickey Walker, NYC. Retains World Light Heavyweight Title.
Quote:
Referee Eddie Forbes voted for Walker, “to the surprise of everybody who learned of this vote before they left the Garden. The referee’s ballot, however, was not considered in the decision because of the unanimity of the two judges. Under the State Athletic Commission rules, when the judges agree their vote carries the decision…. Forbes said after the battle that he warned Rosenbloom repeatedly for holding, hitting on the break and striking with the open glove.”
New York Times
-Henry Armstrong D 10 Kid Moro, Pismo Beach, CA.
Quote:
“The 10-round bout between Henry Armstrong, 130, Los Angeles and Kid Moro, 130, Philippines, ended in a draw at Pismo Beach last night after a state commissioner present reversed a referee’s decision in favor of Armstrong. The referee, Freddie Gilmore, was given police protection as protests of fans ended in a near riot.”
(Reno Gazette).
1934: Baby Arizmendi W 10 Henry Armstrong, Mexico City. From what I have gathered over the years, its pretty clear to me that Arizmendi boxed Armstrongs ears off. Some reports suggest that he won every round with superior boxing skills. Arizmendi was not heavy handed and chose boxing over bravado finishing his career with just 13 knockouts. Not the typical Mexican warrior. What made this win even more amazing is that Arizmendi broke his left wrist in the second round. He turned pro at age 13. Great fighter that rarely gets mentioned because of the stacked era he fought in.
1939: Sammy Angott W 10 Baby Arizmendi, Chicago.
1973: Arnold Taylor KO 14 Romeo Anaya, Johannesburg. Wins WBA Bantamweight Title.
1979: Jim Watt KO 9 Roberto Vasquez, Glasgow. Retains WBC Lightweight Title.

-Juan (Kid) Meza KO 1 Jaime Garza, Kingston, NY. Wins WBC Super Bantamweight Title. Upset of the year. Garza enters the bout with a 40-0 thirty eight ko record.

-Kostya Tszyu KO 2 Zab Judah, Las Vegas. Wins vacant World Super Lightweight Title. Unifies WBC, WBA & IBF super lightweight titles.
2007: Joe Calzaghe W 12 Mikkel Kessler, Cardiff, Wales. Retains World Super Middleweight Title. Referee: Mike Ortega | judge: Raul Caiz 117-111 | judge: John Stewart 116-112 | judge: Massimo Barrovecchio 116-112.
-Juan Manuel Marquez W 12 Rocky Juarez, Tucson, Arizona. Retains WBC Super Featherweight Title.
Robert Guerrero KO 1 Martin Honorio, Tucson, Arizona. Retains IBF Featherweight Title.

Re: This day in boxing. A look back.
I read some place that, at the last press conference before the fight, Meza told garza he was going to knock Garza out early, in order to conserve energy for sex with Garza's mother later in the evening. Garza lost his mind and went after Meza, got so mad he threw up. He was still mad when he got in the ring and fought wild. Though he always fought pretty much all out.

I thought McDonald was winning against Asumah Nelson until he got stopped near the end of the fight.
I wanted Moorer to desperately win against George, who I thought was a big fraud, I will never forgive Moorer.

It was a close fight to be sure. You have to admire a guy like Nelson though. That much talent and willing to fight anyone on short notice and anywhere. He fought Sanchez with under 2 weeks notice and came within a C-hair of beating him.
Moorer was that close to beating Foreman also. That punch Foreman landed did not look that bad but Moorer's chin was not the best. A little reminiscent of Louis/Conn that one.

Yes the first fight. Walked him into the corner and nailed him but he hurt him several seconds earlier. Just FF to about 49:30. If you ask me Monzon looks sloppy in this fight and easily hit.

I've never been a big believer in the whole Monzon thing, but that right hand came out of the sky like the Hammer of God. Monster punch.

Re: This day in boxing. A look back.
Carlos Monzon
Was 'not' a fan favorite in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
He was regarded as a 'street thug' by the Upper-Class and 'hoity-toity'
people in Argentina during that period.
Carlos was appreciated more by the people of the Northern Provinces
and Rural Areas {Cowboys/Ranchers/Farmers}.

Re: This day in boxing. A look back.
When I was a real little kid I knew this guy that had fought pro in the Teens and early 20s of the last century. He'd have me get in my stance and he'd tell me "Never get you chin ahead of your left knee" and he'd tap me under the chin. Somebody should have taught that to Michael Moorer way way before he got to that point in his career.
I'd forgotten how many punches Holyfield took and how comically muscular he was.

Yup. That is one of the first things I look at when watching a fight. Is person A or B in front of their body with their face lol. Where are their feet in relationship to that overhang? Sweet revenge for Holy.
-
Re: This day in boxing. A look back.
Holyfield should never have lost to Moorer the first time, you could tell he was injured. The second time should have been even easier. Holyfield was musclebound to take on Bowe and Tyson types but he was better for this fight when he was lighter an beat Douglas, Thomas, Cooper and Dokes.

The fight was stopped when Clark was all but out. Before he would fight Langford insisted that the ring be reduced to sixteen feet square. From the tap of the gong Langford rushed, showering short jabs to the body. The force of his onslaught rendered Clark powerless and he was knocked to the floor for the count of eight three times in the first round. He came back gamely, but after two minutes of the second round, after he had gone down twice, the referee stopped the fight, giving Langford the decision.
