I watched 'Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf' and I have to say that it was one of the most messed up things I have ever seen. It's a very good film, but it's very painful viewing. Burton and Taylor are so malevolent and cruel towards one another. You would think by that age the characters would have started to chill a little, but they are brutal and in turn rip to shreds anything they cross and in the process shred themselves. Speaking of age you would never think Elizabeth Taylor was on the shy side of her 30's, she looks old. She aged so quickly. Burton of course was older, but being a man, time looked more tenderly upon him and he had a lovely voice. She didn't.
They play games with one another which are cruel and twisted, and they spin them around and draw in others just so that they can open up weaknesses and prey upon them too. Taylor's character seems to be a bit of a slut and Burton's an arch liar and manipulator. I don't like their ways and so really would have walked out in minutes with my jacket unsoiled. None of the characters come across very well. That is the trouble with plenty of people working in Universities, they have a lot of fancy words in their silly fiefdoms, but they are not very decent people. They keep their jobs by appeasing whatever needs to be appeased. They are like journalists in that regard.
Done a lot of Journalism have you ? Actually met any Journalists? Or are you just wielding that wide brush again?
I have worked in the tertiary sector and I have read a lot of journalism and read beyond, but I speak mainly of my experience working at Universities. I know the kinds of people that do these jobs. I have worked with them, read them, others know them. I would extend it to banking, politics, and most areas of life. Being correct and proper will not help you. I know how these fields work and I think you do too. It isn't blanket fold and there are good people anywhere, but there are a mountain of shits to wade through. Many of them are looking for their retirement and pension and for many of these jobs it is who you know too. I speak from experience when it comes to Universities and when it comes to journalists and mainly those I read. It isn't a great leap to jump fields.
With respect. Big huge swinging bollocks. My father in law used to work in Fleet street and my Grandfather was an editor you could not find more honest , forthright open minded people. Working at Universities is nothing like Journalism. I work at several Universities and have lectured several teachers and lecturers at Universities and most of them have no idea of what it takes to be freelancing and working in the real world. Have you got another job yet or have you gone back to University to appease whoever needs to be appeased ?
I don't doubt that there are many good journalists, but looking at the press freedom rankings my arguments have credence. We are in dangerous times. University professors are, like in media needing to say the right things to protect their interests.
No, I haven't got a job right now either. I'm not sure I want to jump back into that. Instead, I am taking time out to the learn the language properly and to be a good immigrant. Paid for by the diligence of my own efforts too. Everyday I study 3 hours, regardless of condition. I am getting better, so maybe I should thank you for calling me a crap immigrant. :p

I watched The Wizard of Oz last night and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I recognized the green, the campy characters, and the Dorothy fag hag symbolism. I have no doubt that I am at least 30% gay as a result. I was 20% prior to watching the film. It is clearly subversive and should be watched by as many schoolchildren as possible.

Watched 'Extinction'. Bit of a blurry obscurity in the zombie genre and often flat, but somehow...it worked. Granted I watched it over two nights, but still.
Also managed to FINALLY catch Unforgiven...now that was a great work.

Eye in the Sky
Directed by Yau Nai-Hoi
Produced by Johnnie To
Starring
Simon Yam Tat Wah
Tony Leung Ka-fai (aka Big Tony)
Kate Tsui
Maggie Siu
Lam Suet
In this 2007 Hong Kong movie, Yam and Tsui play surveillance operatives on the trail of a gang of professional robbers led by Leung. Both Yam and Leung, veteran Hong Kong A-list stars, were great in this. It was Yau’s first directorial effort, working often on scripts for Johnnie To, and what a good movie he directed! Yau Nai-hoi won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best New Director.
Kate Tsui, a former Miss Hong Kong starred in her first movie and she won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best New Actress. She was terrific in this movie. She is a rookie who joins the SU (Surveillance Unit) – their missions are all surveillance/tailing suspects etc. They work as an intricate team tailing suspects, all supervised by Simon Yam.
Big Tony is the mastermind of a gang of professional thieves who knock off jewelry stores. Cold, calculating, smart, and ruthless, he always plans out the heist to the exact second, timing Police response times, etc.
Suspenseful throughout, this police procedural/crime film delivers. There were small touches here and there that really endeared me to the movie like Simon Yam telling a joke to relieve boredom while canvassing an area awaiting the appearance of Lam Suet. Also Lam, great character actor, turned in a solid performance. Additionally, Maggie Siu, a veteran actress, as the foul-mouthed supervisor of the Criminal Intelligence Bureau which the SU is part of, was awesome as well.
NO SPOILER: There were 2 points in the movie that were clichéd … the first point in the movie, I think should’ve been done the other way, but it was good that it went the way it did. The 2nd point was cliché all the way and was satisfying.
I generally recommend any Johnnie To directed movie as well as any movie from his production company, Milkway Image. Even though To didn’t direct Eye in the Sky, any Milkway Image movie will have him overseeing.
I highly recommend this movie.

re: last movie you watched (Flag Up SPOILERS)
I watched There Will Be Blood and have to say it was one of the finest films I have ever seen. It's not a nice film, but it is very well written, directed, and acted. When I say it is not a nice film, I mean that it is like The Godfather part 2 in that it is a very bleak, dark, character study and there are only occasional rays of light. Daniel Plainview is a powerful character and you are either with him so that he can use you, or else you are a competitor and he will destroy you. He grows his oil empire, but as a person he shrinks away becoming ever more distant and will either alienate, threaten to kill you, and then eventually does kill people. It's a very hard film to describe in a few lines and I am too lazy to try, but I recommend this film.
