Aaaaaand still, the undisputed #1 hockey nation!
backstrom failed a drug test that is why he didnt play.. seems it is something found in anti allergy medicine so it could be nothing really
I often wonder why steroids never took hold in hockey. physical play demanding schedule long season....made me wonder.
PED's are as big a part of hockey as any other sport, I would imagine. The NHL's drug testing policy has always been very lax - for a long time (and still to this day as far as I know) they only test during the off-season.
Hockey's never been in the spotlight for steroids because there really haven't been any big steroids scandals like in baseball and football. People don't think about it because the NHL is mostly made up of medium-sized white guys. During the huge steroid booms of the 80s and 90s, the faces of most mainstream sports were jacked super athletes, while the face of hockey was a lanky 170lb white guy with not a hint of a muscle on his body.
Where there's big money and lax testing, there's gonna be PED use for sure.
George Laraque came out a few years back, saying that steroids were a big issue in the NHL, but there was a code of silence around it.
He said most of the enforcers were juiced up big, and a lot of them got jacked out of their mind on ephedrine so they wouldn't feel the punches when they got in a fight.
I should be playing my first pick up hockey game this Friday. My skating (.....which shit, yesterday was like the 7th time I've been skating in 17 years or so) is coming right along and I'm improving in transition and speed as well as balance. I will hopefully be playing on a team this summer. I have all brand new equipment other than my sticks (aluminum Bauer & a wooden Bauer), my gloves (CCM), and my skates (CCM Rapides) which are all at least 17 years old or older. I have a brand new Bauer 7.0 IMS helmet, Avision Ahead clear half shield, Bauer shoulder, elbox, and shin pads, and CCM pants. I will probably replace my old equipment in the near future more than likely starting with skates.
I used to play defense when I was younger because although my skating wasn't great I could read the puck very well and line up Scott Stevens-esque hits. However I completely fell in love with the hitting and did not transfer my offense from roller hockey (where I was unstoppable). As I start my journey back onto the ice with a team I play to do more dangles and sniping than hitting which "isn't allowed" but I am certain up against the boards will see some very physical play.
Tonight is my first pick up game, first game in about 16 years...I'm nervous and excited all at once. I'm ready to get out on the ice and start lighting the lamp!
I agree... just because people aren't testing positive doesnt mean nothing is going on, there are so many different peds that can be used too not just steroids... blood work and other shenanigans can boost endurance and recovery a huge amount which would be a great help when you're playing up to 4 games a week.. Just look at lance armstrong and cycling, lance took a lot of different stuff but never tested positive but it is like a millitary operation and very well planned passing drugs tests becomes pretty easy.. A lot of drug cheats in sports aren't caught by tests but by police operations or whistle blowers.. I honestly think it's only the little guys who cant afford to plan a large elaborate doping problem that get caught..
I would be amazed if drug cheating isn't rife in north american sport :S, the money is so big, the testing is not that intensive and these leagues are pretty much their only option to make huge money so why wouldn't they. i agree with you there
Ott and Miller to St. Louis.... good move

Cheers on a second place! Good job Canada eh!
Oh my God.... I am so fucking tired from hockey.... sore and tired. Got an assist though
Good trade for both teams. Halak wasn't really working out and Miller is a proven elite starter. Buffalo needed to shake things up. They stink
Well Eric Staal is still a giant pussy and the Canes have started slowly again....fucking great. The Canes need to make a lot of trades and build the team to focus on Skinner because he can at least score some goals.
