I can't see how you can be 'nearly' assassinated ....., you either are or you are not? ;)
(that's for the hippo crack ....... which was true when you think about it. Fair Play)

Re: A little history/geography quiz

Re: A little history/geography quiz
You are correct sir. X takes this one. Egypt's Anwar Sadat was co-winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, along with Israel's Menachim Begin, for the negotiation of the Camp David Accord, a peace treaty between their two countries. Jimmy Carter played a key role in the negotiations.
Sadat was killed a few years later when several gunmen, disguised as soldiers as I recall, jumped out of a truck and open fire while Sadat was viewing a parade.
This provides a segue into another question. Begin and Sadat marked the first time the Nobel Peace Prize was shared between an Arab and Israeli leader. What was the second time?

Yassir Arafat shared it with Yitzhak (sp?) Rabin and, I think, maybe also Shimon Peres after the Oslo accords. 1994?
Is that the one you're thinking of?

That's the one. I don't think Peres was involved. Oslo accords dealt with a peace deal between Israel and Palestinians, among other things. Ironically, Rabin was also assassinated. As far as I can tell both Sadat and Rabin were killed by radical elements of their own country who were opposed to the very deals that won them the Nobel Peace Prize in the first place. :(

Re: A little history/geography quiz
Which best selling and often banned book apparently inspired Mark David Chapman to murder John Lennon?
-
Re: A little history/geography quiz
OK, it just popped into my head. I'm pretty sure it was Catcher in the Rye.
-
Re: A little history/geography quiz
Yeah - apparently the lardass loser fancied himself as a bit of a Holden Caulfield, when it was him who was the phoney all the time.
-
Re: A little history/geography quiz
:( What a collosal downer that was. Every now and then you read about Chapman getting turned down for parole. I recall at one point he was suing for the return of his copy of Lennon's album Double Fantasy, which is the last thing Lennon signed, it is probably worth a lot of money.
Never read Catcher in the Rye. One of these days...

Actually just double-checked on wikipedia (after reading this - no cheating :)), and Peres did offically receive the prize too. He was the foreign minister at the time (and became prime minister after Rabin's assasination).

It's a great book, but it actually seem rather tame by today's standards - not the thing you expect to be banned at least. Or inspire maniac fook-ups for that matter.
Okay, I'll come up with a question here: In what cities and countries are the northern-most and the southern-most McDonalds located?
Bonus info: I've visited both  [And I don't even like McDonalds, but in both places this is pretty much their claim to tourist fame, and when in Rome...]

Re: A little history/geography quiz
OK, right you are about Peres.
As for the McDonalds question, are we allowed to consult google earth? ;D

Re: A little history/geography quiz
Having a guess, Spitzbergan North and Tierra Del Fuego south long shot. There wasnt one there in the 60s Del Fuego that is but is a long time ago ;D
-
Re: A little history/geography quiz
They've probably got one on some research station at the North and South poles - i't the sort of corporate advertising that makes me nauseous enough to believe its the sort of thing McDonalds would do.

Re: A little history/geography quiz
Hobart would have to be close, just south of Hobart is the southern most pub in the world. So maybe Australia and Alaska? Or Newzealand south Island and Finland Helsinki ?
Can I think aloud? How many go's do we get?:D
 What? ..Yeah I know, Im like one of those pratts just pressing the buzzer continually.
:action:"No sorry contestant number 4 you already had a go, I'll ask you to leave the buzzer alone now if you would " :embarassed:

New Zealand and Finland would be very, very close! Actually that was my guess too - I visited New Zealand back in 03, and I am pretty damn sure they billed the one in Invercargill as the southern-most in the world (South Island is an amazing place to travel btw, but Invercargill didnt have much, well anything, else to offer IIRC, so we ended up doing a tourist tour at McD) - however, a double check on wiki after asking the question, and apparently there is one even more south in Chile. Punta Arenas is apparently the answer for that one?
In case of north, it is indeed in Finland. However, the right answer is Rovaniemi. Very, very close to the Arctic circle btw, but I think the restaurant is located just south of it. My girlfriend is born and raised very close to the place, which is why I have been hanging around that neck of woods.
Also, many bonus points for funny answer and emoticons! :lickish:

Name a country that is located entirely within another country. I only know of one. Name both countries. The Vatican does not count.

Welcome to the game. Good guess, but my research tells me Liechtenstein lies right on the border between Switzerland and Austria.

Luxembourg borders Belgium France and Germany
My research tells me there are only two such countries, called enclaves, in the world, besides The Vatican. Keep in mind that such a country must be entirely landlocked, it cannot border an ocean.
TM you are not that far away geographically from one of them. Monaco is not landlocked.

People, lets not forget that part of the question is what is the country that contains the country?
