This link from HBO has some more interesting news about the accident and things going on in Chicos life... Also watch the espn video on the page with Dan Raphael with his thought via telephone
In an era when most of the supposed top fighters are dodging each other, fighting for meaningless titles and generally not giving a shit about their fans Chico was a real throwback. Never afraid of anyone or any challenge before him, never afraid to take the road less travelled and most importantly - win, lose or draw - never a disappointment to his fans. Im sure it will be a long long while before we see a fighter like him again, more skill than most and probably more heart than anyone. Always entertaining and always gave 100% in the ring, like most people I will best remember him for taking part in, and winning the best fight that I have ever seen live. Getting up from repeated knockdowns and doing the seemingly impossible against Castillo. As we all agree a true warrior and a great fighter whose impact on the sport and on all of us will always be remembered, a fighter till the end. What more can I say? .... rest in peace Chico. My thoughts are with his family.
RIP
Chico was the definition of a TRUE CHAMPION AND WARRIOR in every sense. Corrales had so much heart. This is tragic. He really deserved to enjoy life after boxing. He earned that, but God must have a greater plan for him. Thoughts and Prayers with his family and friends. This is an enormous loss of a fascinating life. RIP Diego "Chico" Corrales.
OMG. I heard the news on my way home from work. What a devastating loss for boxing. I was always a Corrales fan, and am deeply saddened..... not just at the passing away of Corrales, the fighter, but Corrales, the human being as well. Whatever issues he may have had outside of the ring, my impression of Corrales was always that of a very likeable guy, with a smile for everyone. He never disrespected or dissed any other fighter, and always spoke with respect. And as a fighter...... where do I begin. The man was a true warrior. His first fight against Castillo is up there with my favorite fights of all time.
Rest in peace, Diego.
Gutted.
RIP Chico, a true champion.
:'(
Boxing has truly lost a champion who brought class, toughness, and heart to the sport. I read the news on the crawl on SportsCenter this morning. I thought I read it wrong until I googled "Diego Corrales." Truly sad. Sadder still, my father had no idea who he was. I had to describe the tenth round of Corrales/Castillo to him. Truly a sad day for boxing.
RIP Chico
