When England players are charged with not wanting it enough they just dont get it do they. Actions speak louder than words and whilst they might all say 'YES!' we want to win, on the pitch, where it actually counts, too many of them go looking for a hiding place.
Playing shit happens, literally nothing worked for us and from 1 - 11 everyone had a crap game. Marcus Rashford must be the only 85th minute sub in history who is in with a shout of winning man of the match (for England only obviously)
Watching Wayne Rooney who is undoubtedly a good player and our best distributor by a mile spray passes all over the place was something else, but it happens, bad day at the office and all that. What is inexcusable is our captain and talisman and best passer of a football repeatedly picking the ball up from his center backs only to give it straight back so he can hide behind the first blue shirt he can find so he's not troubled with the responsibility of doing something with the ball.
We wanted to play well and turn Iceland over with style, when that didnt happen not one player had the gumption or stones to roll their sleaves up and get the job done dirty. No disrespect to Iceland, they thoroughly deserved their win.
Now the dust has settled and we've all had our bit of fun, it's time to be serious about this. I think the very fact that the media and so called experts perceive this as a major shock is the very reason why the England football team will never succeed.
anyone who watched last night's game and didn't know which team was which wouldn't have seen a massive gulf in class. THAT IS ENGLAND'S LEVEL. I don't really know why English people think they are or should be an elite footballing nation, because it isn't based on anything on the pitch.
England won a tournament 50 years ago in their own back yard and have reached 2 semi-finals since.(one again in their own back yard.) the likes of Greece, Sweden , Portugal, Denmark and Croatia have done at least as well in the last 50 years.
The expectation is too high for an unproven nation, and because of that the players are seen to have "choked" somehow. The reality is that they are not good enough, and I don't care who they play for or how much they get paid.
Finally, in this "blame Culture" society that we live in, the guy that is copping most of the flak is the Manager and he never even kicked a ball.
England have tried the foreign route in Sven and Capello , guys that had been very successful prior to England and were ridiculed for their efforts. They've tried the English route and that's not worked either. So now Hodgson is getting the Blame. Can anyone honestly say that Gareth Southgate is a better option?
all it needs now is Allardyce or Redknapp to get the job, that will drive the final nail into the coffin.
This was a good team with exceptional individuals that were undefeated getting to this competition.
Overall the performance in the competition was poor. Hart should carry the bulk of the blame he cost us the games and he should never be allowed back in the country and he should stick to his shampoo commercials.
The strikers were inept, Harry Kane was pathetic. Sterling gets too much blame for the others.
Andy Carroll and Townsend should have gone and then at least we would have had a plan B and C.

I agree with Master we should have taken Andy Carrol. It's not like we've got a bunch of technical geniuses who can make fifty pass moves, we've always had trouble stringing three or four passes together at international level. We deride any manager who wants to boot the ball up to the big centre forward but we don't have the technical ability even to outplay Iceland or Slovakia (population four million) so really booting the ball up to the big centre forward is right on our level. Carrol should definitely have been on the bench for when plan A inevitably didn't work. Never mind, at least we're not Scotland.
Undefeated playing Andorra and the Dog and Duck doesn't mean anything. Look at how well we do in tournament play against even tiny teams like Slovakia. We're shit. I'm not sure if you can blame the coach, as there have been a succession of coaches who have not made much difference.
I guess it's possible to blame the players, but unless selection is so flawed .... then those were the best players from a nation of 55 million people, of whom football is the national sport, and who have the richest and (arguably) most competitive league in the world. The top squad of players should certainly be better man for man than Iceland, Wales etc etc. I suspect that they are.
It looked to me to be a matter of self belief and confidence. I thought they poor sods were so transfixed by the fear of failure that they forgot how to play to win. That's a matter of team culture, along with the vultures in the press being quite so carnivorous.
Look at the miracles that someone like Eddie Jones has done with the England rugby team, who were in much the same position as the football team were in quite recently. Having a team manager/leader who focuses on the team dynamic and the mindset of the team, while supported by technical specialists in attack/defence etc works in rugby .... which is a technically and physically more difficult game. Admittedly, there is less worldwide competition, but still?
Perhaps a radical rethink in how the team is led and managed is in order? I don't think there is much to lose!
Bring in a defence coach, an attack coach etc .... but look to have an inspirational and proven 'leader' type who creates a winning culture. They don't need to be a football person, though traditionalists will scream about that to high heaven.

The issue with English football (or indeed, anyone's football) is that it believes only football people can run football teams..
I want someone English, Arsen Wenger would be my choice. :)
