Heavyweight contender Jennings ready to rumble
By Kurt Wolfheimer
Saturday night at the luxurious 4,500 seat McGonigle Hall at Temple University in Philadelphia PA, fast rising heavyweight Bryant Jennings (15-0, 7 KOs) is set to move one step closer to a world title shot when he defends his USBA heavyweight belt against tough Tongan Bernie Tupou (22-2, 16 KOs) in the main event on the NBC Sports Network “Fight Night” series. Promoter Russell Peltz, Jennings and Tupou spoke to FightNews at the Thursday’s final press conference at the Draught Horse Pub on Temple University’s campus.
Peltz spoke of the importance of the NBC “Fight Night” series:
“Earlier this year, the NBC Sports Network “Fight Night” series kicked off in Philly. They featured two fighters that nobody really paid attention to or cared about. Right now big things are happening for them. Gabriel Rosado wasn’t even on the radar. Twelve months later, he’ll find himself fighting for the world title in Madison Square Garden. The other fighter that headlined on that night, a six round heavyweight at the time, was Bryant Jennings He is now ranked fifth in the world and the USBA champion, who is defending his title this Saturday night. I feel that the NBC Sports Network fight series is the best boxing series on television with constant evenly contested and highly competitive fights.”
Peltz on the Jennings vs. Tupou:
“This heavyweight fight is an important fight. When you look at each of the fighters records and common opponents, each fighter has beaten Alexis Mejias. Bryant had a little bit of trouble in that fight and won a decision. Tupou knocked him out in two rounds. Next common opponent was Chris Koval. Bryant stopped him in one and Bowie did it in three. Anytime heavyweights step into the ring anything can happen.
The heavyweight headliners spoke about their showdown next:
Bryant Jennings: It is another fight in my progression towards my goal to be a world champion. I am just glad to be here right now and honored in such a way for my boxing. All my hard work is finally paying off.”
“I don’t know much about Bowie Tupou. I leave that up to my trainers (to find out about him). I don’t look at previous fights. Usually because the fighter could come out and look completely different than what he looked like in previous fights. What I do look at, is one round of their best fight to see what they do have.”
“I am predicting another “W” and moving to 16-0 and still retaining the USBA belt.”
Bowie Tupou: “It feels very good to get a chance to fight for the USBA title. It is going to be a good fight. He is a great fighter and we will see what happens when we step into the ring.

And Vitali and Haye should FINALLY get it on. Haye looks like he's done ducking and I really hope Vitali doesn't start.

Frank Maloney talks about the possibility of a Price vs. Fury fight:
Frank Maloney Statement
Quote:
An offer was made to Tyson Fury guaranteeing him a £650,000 purse to challenge David Price for the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles. Tyson’s promoter Mick Hennessy turned down the offer, describing it as a “joke” and added that David would have to “step up to the plate on our terms.” Since then I have sent Mick an email asking if there is a way for myself and him to sit down to try and make the fight. Team Price can also then hear what Mick meant when he said “our terms.” We could meet in private and agree not to negotiate through the press and stop the name calling, which both sides have been guilty of.
People told me that Lennox Lewis v Evander Holyfield would never be made, but we spent hours around a table and arranged a two fight deal. Price v Fury would be a massive attraction for next summer and both men could have an interim contest before meeting. Apart from David Haye fighting Vitali or Wladimir Klitschko it is the biggest contest in the heavyweight division.
I understand Team Fury’s hesitancy because they believe they are close a fight against one of the Klitschko brothers. If that is the route Mick and Tyson are going, make that clear and both sides can go their own way.
Yes, we did make Lennox v Evander twice. However, I truly hope this is not another Lennox-Riddick Bowe contest where there was plenty said and talks, but no action. Until both teams get around a negotiating table there is little more Team Price can do to make this domestic blockbuster happen in the immediate future.
We have made offers and even tried to make the fight at purses bids when it was ordered by the British Boxing Board of Control, but it was Team Fury who pulled out of those at the last minute. For the good of British boxing I truly hope Price v Fury is one of sport’s great events of 2013.
Bermain Stiverne vs. Chris Arreola has been rescheduled for Feb 23.

Good showing by Jennings last night. He needed to get stuck hard once to see how he can cope. Tupou got tagged with a devastating combo at the end. I don't like Jennings but his style will make for good fights. Jennings is also just recently discovering his power so that will be dangerous going forward.

Audrey Harrison vs. Freddy Flintoff?
World Boxing News: No surprise as Audley is linked to a fight with Flintoff
Quote:
Recent boxing forums have been buzzing with the anticipation of a fight that a surprising portion of fight fans want to see. No it’s not Mayweather v Pacquiao or Fury v Price – but a humble scrap between Audrey Harrison and Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff.
After ex-cricketer Flintoff made a successful foray into the boxing world last month with a four, two minute round win over two-fight pro Richard Dawson, the fans now want to see if he has the tools to deal with the former Olympic gold medallist.
I may be mistaken, but that does not sound like a compliment to Harrison, who has 34 professional fights behind him and not to mention a European title reign, albeit a brief one at that. But to be put in the same bracket as an England all-rounder with his experience proves the light in which the ‘A-Force’ has become with the everyday supporting collective of boxing.
The Londoner’s feeble attempts against David’s Price and Haye have seemingly reduced the former world title challenger to the same level as a man, who up until a few months ago, had never laced on a pair of gloves.
Now I am not saying I wouldn’t like to see that fight happen, because I surely would – and I would give Flintoff a good chance at victory, but it is yet another sign that Audrey is not fit to be fighting competitively anymore and really needs to hang them up as soon as possible.

Adamek and Cunningham already in the ring…in an NBC promo
By Przemek Garczarczyk
Boxing fans will have to wait until December 22 to see former multiple world champions Tomasz Adamek (47-2, 29 KO) and Steve Cunningham (25-4, 12 KO) step into ring at Sands Casino-Resort in Bethlehem, PA to settle their difference and earn the #2 spot in the IBF rankings. But we do have a sneak peak of how both fighters measure up less than two weeks before their long awaited rematch as Adamek and Cunningham faced off for NBC promotional programming in support of the event.
We took this opportunity to ask Adamek, a former light heavyweight and undisputed cruiserweight champion, and current top 5 heavyweight, about his thoughts on the sensational Juan Manual Marquez knockout over Manny Pacquiao.
Asked if JMM was waiting to set up this perfect punch, “Goral” answered: “No way, because if you wait for it, it will never happen. I thought before the fight between those great guys that Marquez would win because he’s got a perfect weapon for Manny’s style – counterpunch – but I never expected it would happen like that.
“It was unbelievable timing, luck and reflexes – Pacquiao charged in with his left, Marquez ducked and moved his fist at exactly the same time and connected. This thing was over before Pacquiao hit the floor. It’s a game of inches and split seconds when you’re fighting on the championship level. If Marquez would have reacted a tenth of the second too late, he would have gone down. All the fighters out there know exactly what I mean.”
