Thank GOD the Hawks won that game...had they lost it would have been over
Two nasty series going on. Mario and Wayne together were great but this team had way more depth IMO. Most dominant team in IIHF history.
Forwards and defense: Dale Hawerchuk, Mark Messier, Mike Gartner, Glenn Anderson, Kevin Dineen, Michel Goulet, Brent Sutter, Rick Tocchet, Brian Propp, Doug Gilmour, Claude Lemieux, Mario Lemieux, Wayne Gretzky, Doug Crossman, Craig Hartsburg, Normand Rochefort, James Patrick, Raymond Bourque, Larry Murphy, Paul Coffey
Goaltenders: Ron Hextall, Kelly Hrudey, Grant Fuhr
Coaches: Mike Keenan, John Muckler, Jean Perron, Tom Watt
...pretty fucking solid team for the '87 Canada Cup
Canada teams are always solid, but I'd take this 2015 team to fuck that 1987 team right in the ass.
That 1987 team was impressive on paper but struggled way more in that tourney than this one did.
Look who they were playing against though, massive squads full of hall of famers!

Goaltenders: Tom Barrasso, Bob Mason, John Vanbiesbrouck

USSR

Goaltenders: Vitali Samoilov, Sergei Mylnikov, Evgeny Belosheikin
Coaches: Viktor Tikhonov, Igor Dmitriev
Finland had Esa Tikkanen, Jari Kurri & Teppo Numinnen .
The late 70's to the late 90's produced some of the best hockey players I've ever seen
Babcock headed to Toronto, that's a big coup for them to lure him away from Detroit of all places. I certainly hope he can right the ship....especially if he wants to do that trade for Semin lol
Jesus I never knew Tom Barasso was American. I could be wrong but I think it's either him or Grant Furh who has the distinction of being the goalie who scored the most points ever (assists).
I never watched the full 1987 Canada Cup, just the highlights, because I was only a year old. I know that it's more than sticking a bunch of star players on a team to make a winning team, they have to work well together and I've never seen the kind of chemistry that this Canadian team had.
A team I do remember watching was the 1998 Canadian olympic team. They had two of the greatest goalies EVER, Brodeur and Roy. They had Gretzky, Sakic, Lindros, Yzerman, Shanny, Linden, Recchi, ect ect on forward. Stevens, Bourque, Pronger, Al Macinnis, ect on defense. It was such a great mesh of veterans and young super stars, it was an absolute dream team... and they couldn't even medal. It was sickening!
Again look who they played against, the 1998 US team was our best EVER and we finished 6th
Look at our roster: G: Guy Hebert, John Vanbiesbrouck, Mike Richter, D: Bryan Berard, Keith Carney, Derrian Hatcher, Kevin Hatcher, Chris Chelios, Brian Leetch, Matthieu Schneider, Gary Suter F: Jamie Langenbrunner, John LeClair, Shawn McEachearn, Keith Tkachuk, Pat Lafontaine, Mike Modano, Joel Otto, Jeremy Roenick, Doug Weight, Tony Amonte, Adam Deadmarsh, Bill Guerin, Brett Hull...the biggest thing they did in Nagano was fuck up a hotel
The Czech's had Hasek who was just un-fucking-stoppable Jagr, Straka, Svoboda, Hamarlik, Hedjuk and they beat a STACKED Russian team that even had the old satellite state players in there guys like Darius Kasparitus from Lithuania but they didn't have a goalie worth a damn because some political shit was going on behind the scenes and there were some injuries so:Nikolai Khabibulin, Alexander Mogilny, Igor Larionov, Slava Fetisov, Slava Kozlov, Oleg Tverdovsky, Vladimir Malakhov and Sergei Zubov, and Alexei Kovalev all missed the tournament. And the Finns what a team THEY had and they got the bronze: Kurri, Koivu, Lumme, Selanne, Niinimaa, Kapannen, Leihtenin, Tikkanen, Numminen.
Sweeden didn't medal and THEY had a boss team! Salo, Forsberg, Sundin, Sandstrom, Sundstrom, Nik Lidstrom! Alfredsson, Nylander, Renberg, Dahlen, Hedberg.
1998 was like THE pinnacle of professional hockey IMO...there were stars from EVERYWHERE and all in their primes or getting ready to hit their primes. Canada should have won (although the US should have been up there too), but it was like the Stanley Cup playoffs, the hot goalie took over and that was Hasek no offense to anyone else he just did his thing.
I will say I like the looks of Team USA with Patty Kane AND Tyler Johnson who has looked amazing in the playoffs
With all due respect to Americans (and Swedish, if Swede is reading this), us Canadian's don't think like that when it comes to hockey. We're supposed to crush every other team like a prime Tyson. To come in 2nd is disgraceful, to not medal is a national tragedy.
This 2015 team did what Canada is supposed to do.
That watered down nonsense you have down there, yuuuuck. ;D
So who do we all have Hawks or Bolts?
I'm cheering for Chicago because I hate any and all Florida professional sports teams....bunch of fair weather fans
I'm happy either way to be honest.
I'd like to see Tampa win because Stamkos is a great player and I want all great players to get to hoist the cup at some point.
Then again I'm a big fan of Toews and Seabrook, who are so underrated. How Seabrook wasn't up for the Norris this year is beyond me and as good as Kane and Toews have been, I think Brent Seabrook is a shoe-in for the Conn Smythe if the Hawks win. I like the "Dynasty" the Hawks have going.
I think the Hawks will win but I'm happy either way, just hoping for a great series.
eddie lack has been shipped off to carolina, which is a shame for the canucks, not because he is particularly good but he was a nice character to have on the team and everyone seemed to like him. Carolina gave up a 3rd and a 6th or 7th round draft pick so I think they really came out of this deal best but the canucks found themselves in a bit of a goalkeeping problem again(having two guys wanting to be number one) so lack is out, I would have prefered if markstrom had been traded but whatever.
Vancouver's goalie situation is incredible. To think last year the big question was who was going to start between Luongo and Schnieder... now both guys play with different teams. They better hope Miller, who I guess is mid 30s now, has some strong years ahead of him left.
So Eddie Lack is bad?
What do you think of us adding Wisniewski?
he's not bad but I think he would get off pretty easy with the media for some shaky performances because he is a fan friendly guy who gives a good interview.. Following the canucks this season many of the post games reports would go along the lines of"Eddie played really well after the first goal/goals".. he was letting in some pretty soft goals but would then step his game up but by then it was sort of a bit late :S.. He has only 2 years in the nhl though but also he isn't that young either,27 I think, I really hope he does well but I was never convinced he is a true number one goalie... For the price carolina paid though I think it's a good deal.
Eddie has a lot of potential though I think. Goalies seem to peak later than skaters in their late 20s and early 30s, so Lack's best years are probably still ahead of him. I like Wisniewski, not the best defensive guy out there but good offensive instincts, brings a lot of energy and isn't afraid to drop the gloves.
Goalie trades are always a toss up. I've seen Ottawa get rid of great goalies like Ben Bishop and Brian Elliot over the last few years for next to nothing, and now get rid of Lehner after 5 years of developing him.
I hope so, even though he's not a canuck anymore he is still one of my favourite players..
I would have preferred if the canucks never signed miller, I would have much preferred hiller who took a million and a year less on his contract, the shorter contract and slightly less money would have been a better enviroment for eddie to have a real chance at taking the number 1 spot but it didn't happen so good luck to eddie and carolina !
The Canucks need to get rid of their blue & green unis and go back to the old black, yellow, and red!
Did any of you guys see the draft? What do you think of the big trades made? Looks to me like the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins are out to make the Hurricanes contenders in the East by making such boneheaded trades.
I think Carolina made out real well. They could surprise next year. Maybe we'll finally see Sergey Tolchinskiy up in the majors. His speed and hands are incredible.
I guess we'll have to wait and see how Boston's first rounders turn out. It'll be years before we know if they made out well or not.
The Canes put Semin on waivers....hopefully the space cleared goes to Sergey Tolchinskiy
Good move, Semin stinks! Sergey Tolchinskiy would only get rookie salary, 500 or 600k whatever it is. Might as well try him out. He's a tiny little fuck though, they need to get him on that testosterone.
Semin is a contract year player plain and simple...he's got talent, but no drive
Kessel has been traded to the penguins for some youngsters and 2 draft picks..
Awesome news. This comes a day after Don Cherry basically gaurenteed everyone that Toronto wouldn't trade Kessel or Phaneuf.
As someone who hates the Leafs, I'm glad and I'm happy for Kessel, who got WAY TOO MUCH of the blame for that team going to shit. He's young, he's explosive, he has one of the best shots in the league and he's lead Toronto in the scoring every year he's been there.
Exciting trade for Pittsburgh. If he clicks with Crosby or Malkin that's going to be scary. Kunitz-Crosby-Kessel would be sick. Who knows how they'll play together, Phil's American so they don't have that international experience together.
Toronto should have kicked Phaneuf to the curb and kept Kessel IMO but what do I know.
Heck of a pickup for the Pens
I guess now they're saying they didn't like Phil's attitude or something.
Mike Green is a Red Wing now. He had 30 goals as a defenceman years ago, he used to put up Erik Karlsson offensive numbers. Wings picked up Brad Richards too!
TJ Oshie to the Caps
@Beanflicker why do you hate Toronto so much?
They are the Chicago Cubs of hockey

slick move
I'm an Ottawa fan, bitter rivals of Toronto. The Battle of Ontario was really tremendous back 10 years ago when both teams were strong.
In Canada everyone is either a Toronto fan, Montreal fan, or other. Toronto has a lot of obnoxious fans who always overhype their team at the beginning of the season, saying this is the year they finally are gonna make it into the playoffs and make a run for the cup, so it's always exciting to see them fail miserably.
I hate Toronto and I hate Montreal, because when I was 7 they beat my idol Wayne Gretzky and the Kings in the cup final.
I'm Ottawa and Edmonton all day!
