De la Hoya sets date for 'superfight' with Mayweather

Two years ago Oscar de la Hoya had his eye on Floyd Mayweather, but at the time more than two stone in weight separated the pair.

On Saturday night in Las Vegas, De la Hoya ended a two-year exile from the ring with arguably his finest-ever performance to stop Ricardo Mayorga in the sixth round to win the World Boxing Council light middleweight title.

De la Hoya, now 33, has held world titles at six weights in what has been one of boxing's most glorious careers, and he insists that he has just one fight left - and he has picked Mayweather for 16 September. Mayweather is the International Boxing Federation welterweight champion, which means that the pair, who once seemed destined never to meet, are now separated by just 7lb in weight; there shall inevitably be a compromise because their superfight would generate a payday in excess of $25m (£13.4m) for each of them.

However, there is a slight problem as De la Hoya has Mayweather's estranged father, also called Floyd, in his corner, and it remains to be seen just how much hostility exists between father and son. Mayweather has another problem because his uncle, Roger Mayweather, who is his trainer, has been banned from working in the corner because of a mêlée during a title fight last month.

On Saturday night De la Hoya, after three months of insults and physical abuse from Mayorga, fought a brilliant tactical fight that left the champion broken-hearted in round six.

From the opening bell it was evident that De la Hoya had prepared perfectly, and that Mayorga clearly believed trading insults and slaps during their long rally of press conferences would give him the edge in the ring. In round one Mayorga was dropped by a left hook and took a steady beating until he turned and dropped to the canvas in round six.

It was De la Hoya's 38th win in 42 fights, and there have been some modern classics involved during his 12 years as a world champion in various weight divisions; but it's doubtful that any of his previous performances were better.

All I can say is wow...it's one fight I can't decide on who has the most leverage and September can't come fast enough

So Hatton and Margarito get snubbed. I don't have much pity for Hatton getting snubbed since he chose to fight paper champs Maussa and Collazo after beating hall of famer Kosta Tszyu. If Hatton had fought credible fighters he would have had my sympathy.

But Margarito deserves a shot at the big time, even more than Mayweather, because Margarito has long proven his mettle and his worth at 147.

Now if Mayweather beats Oscar on Sept 16th, I can see Mayweather willingly refusing to give Margarito or Hatton, any shot at him. I see Mayweather doing a rematch with Judah, and then fighting the winner of Vargas/Mosely.

why? lol

some things just don't make any sense and vargas/mosley doesn't for mayweather

If Floyd wins I also can see him snubbing Margarito, but there's no way he would snub Hatton. If everything goes according to plan, Hatton would be the overwhealming fan favorite to fight Floyd, as well as present the highest payday. One thing is certain though, the winner of DLH-Mayweather will be the fighter of the year.

why is this fight happening ??? Because Oscar De La Hoya is the money man and Mayweather is all about money. There are fights that he can cement his legacy on like Margarito and Hatton which he has style advantages over. Beating Oscar will just give him a name and he'll be discredited IF he beat Oscar. He should have taken the Hatton and Margarito fights before putting himself at this risk.

of course it's happening because of money. ??? ???

why is that at all surprising? he'll have time to fight hatton (and margarito if necessary) later -- this is the one chance to get de la hoya. every boxer out there in this weight range, hatton and margarito included, would jump to fight ODH over anyone else. why? because of the money. it's not just a floyd thing.

Given the choice of earning in excess of $25m for one fight and or facing dangerous guys to cement your legacy isn't really a choice is it? ;)

and anyway Floyd fighting De La Hoya is the biggest risk he's been willing to take in an extremely lonnnnnnnggggggggggggg time

So this fight is 100% done deal then? If so I can't wait till Sep. If PBF wins then I garuntee that he will fight Hatton next because thats where the money will be, and if I don't recall floyd said "if it makes money if makes sense" right.

Only 5 fighters in boxing history have ever made $20 million or more for a single fight: Tyson, Holyfield, Lennox, Douglas, and Oscar. If you have a chance to be number 6, you'd be a retard not to take the fight.

that's a different point, but i'm not sure it's true anyway.

in any case: 1. floyd makes more for fighting ODH than for those two fights combined and 2. i don't think floyd'll lose. the odds are probably not too far off what they'd be against hatton. and if the odds are worse for floyd--which i'm guessing they will be, if only somewhat, then you REALLY shouldn't be complaining about him taking this fight.

now we'll have Hatton vs Gatti. just thinking about it makes me shudder.
