Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
Hey everyone, I just found this forum. I have recently been interested in getting into boxing. Unfortunatly I like 50 miles from the nearest gym, so I must kinda be self-relient on training.
For my question, I am 19, 6' and 130 lbs. Skinny! lol. I lift weights, I have gained alot of strength, but I am not really gaining muscle mass. Boxing kinda seems like a lost cause for me since I am 130 lbs, and not gaining any mass. Is it possible to become a boxer w/ my body?
I eat tons, lift every other day, but still got the fast metabolism. Any suggestion?
Thanks.

Don't worry. I'm a tall skinny motherfucker myself; (6'3" and 158lbs. after a meal). :( The only thing that would really prevent you from being a boxer is being overweight. Go put it to em'. 8)
Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
Question; being as skinny as I am, is it really worth it to try to bulk up, or should I just try to focus on strength and speed? I have read many post on lifting and such, but not too many really applied to my situation.
My current routine is:
curls 3 sets, 10 reps (28 lbs)
pushups 5 set 10 reps
brench press 3 sets 10 reps (80lbs, not my max lol)
after those I do shoulder shrugs, lateral lifts, buttery flies, ect.
any suggestion?

Stay away from curls, and weights all together for that matter until you find a good boxing coach . Curls will shorten your tendons in the bicep and prevent you from getting full extension on your punches.. your power is going to come from full extension, not big muscles, in fact big muscles are counter productive to a boxer. correct form and full extinctions will be your bread and butter, do push-up like crazy , chin ups wide grip for your shoulder and do lots of stomach exercise. skinny guys are the one's knocking everyone out ! Bulking up is not recommended .
Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
Stay skinny - Tommy Hearns, Chico Corrales, Manuel Medina and others didn't do too badly.
In boxing, the point is to be as light as you can, not to bulk up.
I bet you will be a monstor for your weight !!
;)

Tommy hearns and other skinny boxers alot of the time have very broad shoulders and back just not much mass though, but i see what your saying
Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
Those guys where tall and fought at a light weight, but what you have to remember is. They don't walk around at that weight or weight that much in the ring... they dry up before the weigh in. Amatuers can't do that. You fight to often for it to be safe.

How much physical activity do you do in a day and how many Kcals do you consume?
Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
other than my every other day workout, I play basketball about every other day.
So pushups are the way to go? How exactly will they help me?
Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
theres more to it than that ;) its all to do with energy balance. If you are eating less Kcals (energy) than you are using then you will not be able to maintain a healthy weight.
Any ide how much you eat?

Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
On an active day, I dont eat a whole lot. On a boring day, I eat like every 15 mins. atleast 4 average meals a day on a regular day. But its hard because I dont feel hungry too often.
Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
If you're not hungry then your probably eating enough... ;) don't tryand force the weight on... if you are 6 foot and 130 pounds you are 6 foot and 160 pounds... you don't look as slim as I'd imagined you would. you just have very little fat ;) maybe condsider eating a bit more fat (polyunsaturated vegetable fats etc ;)) its actually benificial for your energy systems to have some fat stored on you.
It all comes down to how you feel at the weight though... if you feel strong at it... they'll be few other 130 fighters who can match the power of your straight shots... just make sure you tie the shorter guys up on the inside :P
Like I was saying in another thread to some other guy, you may be the same height as some one like say Tyson (more or less) but you won't get built like them (with out being bulky and slow) because you have a different frame to them, just work with what you have ;)
Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
Thanks for the help fellas. Any suggestion for a new workout routine for a person in my condition looking for strength?
