Just watched the Holyfield fight........
I actually thought he looked pretty good. I know it only went two rounds but he was throwing combinations, his punches were accurate, he was relatively light on his feet.
I know Bates was hardly a test but Evander looked as good as it was possible to look in the circumstances.
What really suprised me though was his post fight conversation, he really wasn't slurring and didn't sound nearly as punchy as I was expecting.
Lets be honest, James Toney looks and sounds far worse than Evander!
I'm rooting for him now, big George proved that miracles do sometimes happen and if anyone can achieve the impossible it's Evander Holyfield.
I would say a collision course with Valuev or Maskaev, maybe Barrett if he beats Valuev is now a likely possibility.
Whether he can go to the well and fight a long hard fight remains to be seen but I think he's justified his desire to carry on.
I'd rate his chance at becoming world champ at around 40%
But if I find some decent odds for it I may lay a wager on it.

You are right, Bilbo...he did look very fleet of foot and he was indeed throwing punches in bunches...
You can only look as good as you can in each given fight and in this he did look sharp...
But he was in with a journeyman with a serious issue with creating an offence because of a very limited reach....
The big guys in the division, with the exception of Toney, are taller rangier men than Bates and will cause problems with their attacking arsenal....
He did look good but lets not get ahead of ourselves....It was only 5 minutes of boxing....

Yes Miles but apart from Wlad all of the current champions are journeymen. I still think Evander can outbox Valuev, maybe even outslug Maskaev and Lyakovhic.
Wladimir would probably punish him badly though, but against the others even at 44 years old he's got to have a chance.

He did look really good last night, and if he can sustain that kind of style and movement over 12 rounds then, yes, he has a shot....but its a big IF....can he really keep in that rhythm round after round and keep the output high enough? He will certainly take punishment and that can take anybody out of their gameplan....
Maybe he can do it and I would love him to fulfill this final heavyweight quest...I was really happy seeing him look so confident, but then again we've not seen him in against this low quality of opposition in a long, long time....
I hope he gets back in the ring in a matter of weeks instead of months and tries to build up momentum...if he can rack up a few more wins, then maybe he can try and step it up one final time...but dont go expecting any miracles. Foreman, always had exceptional power to fall back on. Holyfield has never been a big heavyweight.

Don't encourge him. If you really think he has a chance. Than go watch his fight against the mediocre Larry Donald. Than you'll see what would happen against a live body. Bates was just that bad

I'm not happy with his performace at all. Bates was overwhelmed and confused but I don't think he was ever in serious danger. There was a point in round 2 when Bates caught Evander with a good shot and backed him up.

I agree. Bates was so completely overmatched that he had no idea how to defend against combinations or get off the ropes, however after it all he was not hurt and Bates was able to hurt Holyfield with a punch in the first round. I realize the division is in a bad state at present, however, permitting Evander Holyfield to continue to fight I fear will ultimately border on the criminal. He could get hurt for the final time.

I don't really see the problem. It's Evanders choice he knows the risks and to be honest from his point of view he would probably rather die doing what he loves than anything else.
Remember Holyfield has a different mindset to what most of us can even imagine. He's chasing history and a legacy that will endure, in that sense he's almost like the great warriors of old Achilles, Spartacus or Gaius Marius.
He knows the risks but doesn't worry about them becuase boxing is in his blood, it is his life.
It was once considered an honour to die in battle, and although we certainly don't feel like that today I think that is pretty much Holyfields mindset.
He's a born warrior, probably would have been a Gladiator if born thousands of years ago.
To deprive him from doing what he was born to do would be just as cruel as anything that could happen to him in the ring in my opinion.

Holyfield or a Mesi like subject dies in the ring...one that has had warning after warning & ban after ban...the media would be on that like white on rice & so would glorious congressmen.
Holy's good for the fans...but bad for the sport in the end.
I honestly don't want to see some old man bloodied or beaten to death in the ring.
