Seemingly timing's got a lot to do with it.
I’ve been doing a bit of research. Here’s what I found out.
High carbohydrate diets optimise muscle glycogen levels, high muscle glycogen concentrations are needed during endurance and high intensity exercise. To achieve the right amount of glycogen, just eating plenty of carbs isn’t the best way to go about it but also, when you take them. Eating carbs immediately after exercise, you will enhance your total daily muscle glycogen resynthesis much more than you would by consuming the same amount of carbs earlier in the day or postponing your carb consumption until a few hours later.
Taking in carbohydrate immediately after exercise also has a positive effect on protein metabolism, decreasing the rate of protein degradation in muscles and increasing protein synthesis, therefore building muscle.
To help recovery and increase your chances of performing well during subsequent training sessions, take in carbohydrate and protein immediately after your workout ends. Aim for about 2g of carbohydrate and about 0.5g of protein per kg of body weight.
Turkey sarny anyone? :)

A solid peice off information great stuff MD cc
Re: Seemingly timing's got a lot to do with it.
CC, I normally eat a lot of carbs before I train and a mix of carbs and protiens afterwards.
I might try toning down he carbs before and increasing the ones after, you can really feel the difference when your muscles a loaded with Glycogen ;)
Re: Seemingly timing's got a lot to do with it.
Cheers dudes.
I've found it made a difference after high intensity (30 mins) and low intensity (6hours). Your body soaks the carbs up like a sponge and the fatigue isn't as bad.
I'll try and find out more about pre-exercise food to help combat muscle degradation during training. I've read research in the past that certain quantities of proteins and carbs work better than others. I'll see what the guys in white coats are saying now - then I'll test it.
I'd be interested in how you get on Adam. :)
Re: Seemingly timing's got a lot to do with it.
Ive been rehabing a premier footballer coming back from a major hip operation. Who hasnt trained for 9 months, but whose recovery has been remarkable. After 3 weeks he started training with the 1st team squad, and was able to train at there level of fitness with no problems. But because of the time factor He came an hour after training to me. problems his work levels dropped even after eating at the club before he arrived. His cardio output dropped alarmingly the first session so we changed his time from 1 o/clock to 6 o/clock after a rest and a refuel not a problem. after the work he gets his Tuna sandwich hes back on track. What M D says is so very true, its about timing

Eating right after exercise replenishes the muscle glycogen stores and stops your muscles degrading. If you do this you get the best return from the food you eat. Remember to eat your other healthy meals too.
McD's is a fine choice of eatery for the average fat b%$tard. With all the preservatives you'll be eating you might live forever. ;D

Re: Seemingly timing's got a lot to do with it.
nice information.i normally only eat high protein and nutrients before a workout.
Re: Seemingly timing's got a lot to do with it.
Is A Protein Shake Even Needed With A Healthy Diet Or Is it For The People Who Cant Eat Alot And Need Alot Of Protein For The Workouts?
Re: Seemingly timing's got a lot to do with it.
Good question Boxer. I'm not completely sold on protein shakes; if you have a diet which has the right balance of nutrients and you take them at the right time then I don't think you need a protein shake. But for convenience I can understand why people take them e.g. if you go to training after work you don't want to be eating chicken sandwiches which have been in your gym bag all day.
Either way keeping your body in a positive nitrogen balance i.e. making sure there's enough amino acids ensures that you limit the amount of muscle degradation during and after exercise.
