Question for our American friends - annual leave in the USA
Was out last night and some American bloke in pub by, your base at Menwith Hill, was saying that in the USA workers only get about 10 annual leave in their jobs, Is this right or was he bullshitting us ? I didn't believe him.
I get 30 plus 11 1/2 days bank holiday plus my traditional annual week's sick ;) and that is still not enough !!!
Grateful for any input

Re: Question for our American friends - annual leave in the USA
We have several American subsidiaries of the company i work for and I go over there quite a bit. I also have canadian family in Toronto.
Yes, it's true, most Americans get two weeks of holiday a year. That is why there prodictivity per capita is amongst the highest in the world.
Re: Question for our American friends - annual leave in the USA
two weeks ??????
thats pants ! one summer holiday and its all gone ! :'(
Re: Question for our American friends - annual leave in the USA
Where do you work to get so many holidays, Mark?
Re: Question for our American friends - annual leave in the USA
I live out in Korea and my 10 days a year is actually considered good. My wife's company doesnt give any holiday leave because they have only recently stopped opening on a Saturday!!
For our vacations she will be mysteriously sick for a week twice a year! ;D
Back home in England I would never consider less than 4 weeks a year hols time....

in government
it used to be you had to be there 15 years to get 30 days but now standard for new starters. When you been there 20 years you get a one off week's holiday extra too - i hope to retire before then.... :-\
isn't the standard for UK jobs about 22 anyway ?
Re: Question for our American friends - annual leave in the USA
Nice one.
Working Time Directive states all workers should get 4 weeks, but some comapnies interpret this to include bank holidays, so they are really only offering 12 days.
We offer 20 to start, but that can go up to a maximum of 26, so a national average of 23 sounds beliveable.
Re: Question for our American friends - annual leave in the USA
guess we are pretty lucky as we get extra 3 1/2 bank holidays too
I will stop moaning
I am so glad I don't work in US
Still if its the norm I guess you would get used to it
Re: Question for our American friends - annual leave in the USA
i get 5 weeks annual leave
2 weeks worth of hours in my annal leave for wen i need extra days off
and u get a week off after every set of nights u do and u do about 3 sets a year
so i get bout 10 weeks off a year not to bad
Re: Question for our American friends - annual leave in the USA
Two weeks is considered alot for most I know. I am self employed and rarely take more than 3 days at a time.
Re: Question for our American friends - annual leave in the USA
I did not know what the eff you were taking about when you said annual leave
we calls it vacation
yes it true two weeks vacation is the norm plus some people put in 10 hour days when they work
me I start work at 7AM and leave by 6Pm, sometimes 5:30PM
I heard about Germans having about 4 weeks off. I did not know the Brits were the same
so in short
eff all of you
that is all
Re: Question for our American friends - annual leave in the USA
