Mayweather's PPV numbers weak
Mayweather's PPV numbers weakest of three cardsBy Dan Rafael

Floyd Mayweather's shutout victory against Carlos Baldomir to win the world welterweight championship last Saturday night in Las Vegas generated 325,000 pay-per-view buys, HBO announced Friday.
The fight, which cost $49.95, generated $16.3 million in television revenue, but was the weakest performing of the three cards Mayweather has headlined on HBO PPV.
Both of his previous HBO PPV fights, which cost $44.95, did more business.
Mayweather's lopsided decision win against Zab Judah in April generated 374,000 buys and $16.8 million in revenue and his June 2005 destruction of Arturo Gatti to win a junior welterweight belt generated 365,000 buys and $16.5 million.
Despite the drop off in sales, HBO put a positive spin on the total.
"We're very pleased with Mayweather's PPV performance, especially given that Baldomir had little previous exposure in the US," HBO PPV's Mark Taffet said.
Baldomir's only previous U.S. exposure came in his January upset of Judah to win the welterweight title and his July knockout of Gatti in his first defense.
Mayweather's weak number probably won't bolster his case during ongoing negotiations to fight junior middleweight titlist Oscar De La Hoya in May. De La Hoya, who has given Mayweather a Monday night deadline to accept an offer, has been a box office star for years.
He generated a surprisingly high 925,000 buys when he beat Ricardo Mayorga in May.
Mayweather promoter Dan Goossen pointed out that when De La Hoya fought lesser-known opponent, he didn't always do big pay-per-view business. Goossen said he was pleased with Mayweather's pay-per-view performance.
"These numbers are very reflective of the numbers generated by Oscar when he did not have the well-known name challenger in the other corner, which obviously speaks volumes of Floyd's star power," Goossen said.
Mayweather-Baldomir will be replayed Saturday night before HBO's live coverage of the Wladimir Klitschko-Calvin Brock heavyweight title fight.

Obviously HBO will attempt to put a positive spin on this, but surely the P4P no1's PPV ratings should be increasing rather than decreasing ?
Any thoughts as to why this happened ?
;)

Enough people realised there's better ways to spend dough than forking out 50 quid to watch a "sure thing" win on the bridle?

Agreed!!! to a certain extent....I knew as a Fan that the fight was going to be a fore gone conclusion with MAyweather dominating and the fight producing no real drama, but I bought it anyway cause I wanted to see my boy put on a clinic and showcase his exceptional skillz ;)
Re: Mayweather's PPV numbers weak
That's some pretty scary figures when you consider that he is commonly known as the best fighter on the planet.
Would have easily been 5 times at least watching the likes of Leonard etc 20-25 years ago. :o

Agreed 100%.
I almost didn't want to shell it out...but that being said...I almost didn't want to shell it out for Oscar Mayorga...because I knew the out come there too. ;D
I think that comparing Oscar's numbers to Mayweather's is a bit silly also...Oscar's been at it waaaaaaaaaay longer & has a much larger fan base than any other fighter in the game.
Re: Mayweather's PPV numbers weak
325,000 for Baldomir and yet "only" 365,000 for Gatti for $5 dollars less :-\
Doesn't that augur well for Mayweathers pulling power? Gatti is a star, right? Baldomirs not. How come the Gatti PPV was so shit? :-\
And also being P4P no.1 doesn't mean you're going to be the biggest draw, does it? Oscar easily trounces the likes of Hopkins and Jones when they held that position.

:coolclick: Good points.
Re: Mayweather's PPV numbers weak
This Mayweateher hating is out of order, the guy is a great boxer, he is only a small guy it's not his style to go in all guns blazing, he went in totally outclassed a man nearly 20 lbs heavier than him, what more do you want?? The buys imo were fine. It wasnt a fight with two greats going in.

Agreed it doesnt. Do you not think this would worry Floyd, the fact his PPV's sales are dropping with each fight. And do you think this may affect his bargining power when it comes to thrashing out a purse with either Oscar, or even Spinks if the Oscar bout doesnt come off?
:)

Potentially with Oscar, I wouldnt worry about Spinks to much he is skilled and Fills up his ST Louis Venues but I dont think Floyd would have a problem with the Spinks Team ;)

As far as his bargaining power goes, it's really a pissing contest at this point, because there is no way he needs more money.
Re: Mayweather's PPV numbers weak
They are decent numbers but I just do not think he is a big PPV attraction. I mean us as boxing fans enjoy watching the slick skills but the average fan does not care,he'd rather see a war!Second,if that's the first time you've seen Mayweather or paid $49.95,that's also the last because if I'm an average fan,no way would I pay to see that again and not just that but the whole card sucked big time! Was that the worst undercard of the year?
It's similra to Winky Wright? Isn't his next fight PPV? Now I have have to see the numbers for that because even some hardcore boxing fans here find him boring so what will the average fan think?!

true ....so true....and an ODLH-PBF PPV would sell over a million!!! I think it could be the largest PPV ever....

Winky Ike is not PPV. HBO's got a pretty great free line-up for the rest of the year--Winky, JT, and I think there was another good one or two.
I'd say the Golden Boy PPV card that Marquez didn't even end up fighting on that featured guys who are not really even PPV attractions taking on no-namer bums was definitely the worst PPV card of the year. So I was a little incredulous when Oscar got all righteous in that interview talking about how he didn't watch the PBF-Baldi fight because the whole card "wasn't worth $50 to him"--even ignoring for a second that $50 to Oscar is about half a cent to the average fan.
