We've all done the P4P thing before (Ricky Hatton at number 1 etc ;)) however I thought it'd be interesting to find out who peoples top 5 trainers are.
Y'see, big names aside, I think they're are plenty of great trainers out there...some I think perhaps get overlooked simply because thier related to the boxer in question...
Maybe at the end we can suss wether it's the Brits or the Yanks that have the best training talent... ;)

I like Roach too. I was just asking cos he's still flavour of the month due to his association with Pac.
Personally, I think the Ingles are underatted. I like the fact that they 'grow thier own' so to speak. To me that's much more of an achievement than taking on an already established fighter. Actually, I'll tell you who I don't rate...Buddy McGirt. The job he did with Gatti was way overrated IMO
McGirt gets alot of credit for making Gatti a 'boxer'. He didnt box anyone decent in the whole time he was with him.
Trainers are hard to rate I think. Had Rick not chosen the Phoenix what would Graham be rated as? People often say if Naz had stayed with Ingle he would have faired better. What if he had never met him and learned to box 'proper'?
I like Roach, great job with Pacquiao. You have to respect Manny Steward as well, he may cherry pick fighters but he has paid his dues and earned the right to.
Alright, lets change tack; if you were a fighter who would you want to have train you and why?
For sure some trainers are better than others but for the most part they're only as good as the talent of the fighter
Roach has done a great job with Pac but Pac already had talent in abundance....What did having Roach as his trainer do for Alex Arthur? He was with him (i know not on the night) when he got battered and caught with ten thousand left hooks from Gomez.

I think I'm trying to make sense of how to rate these guys.
For instance, I mentioned the Ingles, I have a lot of respect for the fact they've brought some world class fighters through from scratch. However, I do conceed that I can only take so much of Brendan Ingles 'arc yer jab, throw yer bombs' and that thier style is perhaps lacking at the very highest level...
That said, the likes of Goosen, Steward, Roach have all taken on new charges once most of the work has been done. In this instance, as Fenster alludes to, it's all about matching the right fighter to the right trainer. Simply having Steward in your corner isn't going guarantee a win. Putting Steward with Lewis however was a masterstroke. Thier respective styles complimented each other.
Actually, the more I think about it, is Roach's influence overstated?
For instance, I can't see a lot of Roach's influence in James Toney. To me, it just looks like he's the only one that'll put up with him. As for Manny, although we're crediting Roach for developing Pacs left hook...what about against Marquez where it was apparent that Manny actually isn't that sophisticated. There was no plan B there. There's no depth to Manny.
Theres a saying, if its not broke dont try and mend it. But you can try and improve it I feel. Ive had dealings with the people you talk about, Roach and Steward and a lot more. Roach has his fundamentles right comes from a good school of thought. Manny has some good coaches or did around him.
