Shavers knockdown of Holmes...

I think part of what makes it so brutal is the co-commentator just going 'ooohhhh' as the punch lands. What a brutal shot, one of the cleanest shots I've ever seen.
And what about Holmes - he gets back up and wins the fight. Unbelievable.

Funny eh? looking back..
Acorn was considered a "MONSTER" puncher back then
at 6' nothing and 200 pounds......weird..
shows how smart a fighter Larry was....how he holds on....
Re: Shavers knockdown of Holmes...
Yeah, Earnie could bang. There is an excellent boxing book out called 'Cut Time' by Carlo Rotella and there is a bit on Shavers. He reckons he hit so hard because when he was young he worked on a farm and spent time tossing bails of hay - 'not a lot of weight, but a lot of repetitions makes you strong'.
He had Ali in trouble in their 1977 fight too... Although Ali was barely Ali by that time.
Either way, the punch that felled Holmes was incredible. Not many heavywieghts in history would have got up after that shot IMO, let alone go on to win.
Re: Shavers knockdown of Holmes...
Earnie was for my money the hardest puncher of all time, and that was one of the hardest punches I've ever seen him land, so for Holmes to get up from that and go on and win the fight is just a testament to how great Larry Holmes was. One of the best ever IMO

Ha... he sorta rolls onto his side and thinks about it for a second. It's like me trying to get up for work after a massive night! The alarm clocks going and I'm thinking to myself 'bugger this!!'
He springs up pretty quick though - although you can tell he's still really out of it. I reckon it was his sheer body weight that stopped him from doing a Zab dance. He was on queer street for the rest of the round. But like a champ, he found a way...

That was the hardest punch I ever felt. I still feel the Shavers punch. I went to give an uppercut and got caught. I went to the other corner and held onto Shavers until i got my legs back.
Re: Shavers knockdown of Holmes...
I read another explanation where he says that he was actually out on the way down but the thud on the canvas actually brought him round.

tyson didnt hit as hard as sharvers plus holmes wasnt in his prime against tyson as you know it was tysons great technique and great speed that made his punches powerful because of his quick hands impact was awesome but all in all shavers hit harder
Re: Shavers knockdown of Holmes...
That punch used to be on the opening credits of World of Sport, anybody remember that?

Wow, maybe a dumb question, but what site does Larry Holmes post at?
Re: Shavers knockdown of Holmes...
Great punch...if Earnie learned some defense and how to BOX a little better he could have been the best heavyweight ever.
What I wouldn't give to see Prime Shavers vs...
Prime George Foreman
Prime Mike Tyson
Prime Evander Holyfield
