The Dangerous Dozen: Heavyweights
OK my list includes only fighters who are current heavyweights and CONTENDERS, not title holders.
Here are The Most Dangerous
1. Sam Peter: His boxing has improved, he has loads of power and a good chin. Tough for ANYONE
2. Vitali Klitschko: He is #2 because of ring rust but he's still a young-ish heavyweight and pretty friggin tough to fight.
3./4. Ruslan Chagaev/Sultan Ibragimov: Slick fighters and southpaws with power!
5. Calvin Brock: Good average fighter with decent power. He's young, he's tough, and he has heart.
6. Sergie Lyakhovich: solid fighter on his way back from injury. No power but he's a solid fighter.
7. Lamon Brewster: old warhorse, he's tough he's fending off injury but he might have ring rust on him.
8. Eddie Chambers: tremendously gifted boxer, he doesn't have much power, but he's slick, he's just not big enough to overwhelm anyone.
9. John Ruiz: he's old, fat, boring, and he's still up here....he's just tough to beat (on the scorecards that is)
10. Alexander Povetkin: Sure he hasn't even had 15 fights yet but he's a BEAST. He's a good boxer with good power and he puts his punches together very well.
11. Corrie Sanders: He slips a bit because of the long layoff but he is still DEADLY with that left hand!!!
12. The old guard: Rahman, Toney, Holyfield: Old warriors can really get up for title fights....never ever look past them
Re: The Dangerous Dozen: Heavyweights
Nice to see you finally recognising Sam Peter after having a go at me for rating him as the number 2 heavyweight out there a couple months back :P
It's possible Tony Thompson might cause another upset or two. He completely outboxed Guinn and handled Timor Ibragimov just as easily. On his day I'm sure he could outbox some of those mentioned in your top 12.
I fancy Matt Skelton to cause an upset if he does ever get a crack at a world title, providing he keeps away from Wlad or Sam Peter.
And I'm hoping that someone someday will give old Oliver McCall another shot. He's still winning fights. I hear he's pencilled in to fight Sinan Samil Sam in June so maybe he will finally get a chance to return to the big time.
He definitely could do with the money, if only to buy himself some teeth ;D
Re: The Dangerous Dozen: Heavyweights
Lyle giving Sam Peter due....:o
I agree about Thompson Bilbo. Very good boxer with a cagey defense. Don't see that so much in the heavyweight ranks but he manages to pull it off.
I would love to see Brewster - Sergei II with the winner getting a title shot.
But I think the most interesting name o the list is at 10. Povetkin is such an awesome fighter. Not very big, but has true power and he carries it in both hands. That power is going to go a long way imo. I could see him KO'ing everyone on this list with the exception of Peter and Vitali. Not yet of course but he'll definitely make some waves in the division. I would actually like to see him fight Ruiz pretty soon.
Re: The Dangerous Dozen: Heavyweights
....Hey I only discredit Sam Peter when people are not realistic about his skill....given the fact that Maskaev, Valuev, and Briggs are title holders Sam Peter is a true threat to them! Sam is somewhat of a threat to Wladimir but he needs to show improvement vs taller, stronger, fighters than James Toney. Peter could use brute force to place his punches vs anyone else but the Klitschko's.
Thompson is a tough guy but at 35 years old and he doesn't really have the experience of other 35 year olds in the division.
Larry Donald is still a tough fight for anyone especially Oleg Maskaev and Shannon Briggs....movers won't do as well vs Valuev because he takes one step and the ring is cut off.
Re: The Dangerous Dozen: Heavyweights
I think no. 11 aka Corrie Sanders is the most dangerous on the list...he is so damn fast with this left
and has such a big punch with it that he could floor everyone on the list,if he connects right...and
he throws it when nobody expects it...thats dangerous...
But mostly its just...for such a dangerous opponent you gain very little if you beat him...like with Vitali
(yeah of course he got the belt, but I mean recognition...), people will say he just beat an old man...
Or you could loose everything like Vlad did...
Corrie is damn dangerous...
Re: The Dangerous Dozen: Heavyweights
He'd be the most dangerous IF he trained.
Guys who can take Sanders deep will more than likely KO him because he doesn't have the gas to go that far.
Re: The Dangerous Dozen: Heavyweights
Why is Clavin Brock so high on this list?? I think Sergie Liakovich should be higher. He had a shitty night against fat man magoo, but his previous fight he banged in. I still think he can beat some contenders on the list.

Here's my top 5...(current guys)
1. Wladimir Klitschko....may have a questionable chin still but his defense and offense may not allow anyone to ever get there again.
2. Samuel Peter....this kid punches like a mule kicks and is getting down with some not-too-shabby ring skills these days. I look for him to claim a world title very soon.
3. Nicolai Valuev....dude is humongous. i'm sorry but he's gonna be trouble for anyone out there right now based on his sheer size alone. god help them if he learns how to box and move.
4. Oleg Maskeav....one thing you can be sure is he isn't gonna fold or give up. the guy is in it for the long haul and he doesn't stop working. a really tough customer. just ask hasim rahman.
5. Vitali Klitschko....teach a guy this big to box and he's gonna cause problems and fuck more than a few people up. it doesnt help the opposition that this guy and his brother can think too. I see V.K. as a major player in the heavyweight division despite his retirement and layoff.
Re: The Dangerous Dozen: Heavyweights
But I said diamonddave "Contenders NOT TITLE HOLDERS" and therefore this excludes Wlad, Oleg, Briggs, and Valuev.

Lyakhovich has withered before in fights....he hasn't come back to form yet and only had 2 fights where he did very well vs percieved top competition (Brewster and Guinn).
Whereas Brock was undefeated before lasting 7 rounds with the top heavyweight in the division and he has shown more consistency albeit vs lower class opponents. I still like his chances vs Maskaev, Briggs, and Valuev whereas Sergei may be able to beat Oleg by UD but doubts remain about how he'd do vs Nicolay or Shannon in a rematch
Re: The Dangerous Dozen: Heavyweights
You have twelve in there and no toney!!
Mad head.. Toney comes about five for me
Re: The Dangerous Dozen: Heavyweights
Right..I missed toney in your list..But twelth is pretty far down... :P

What really hurts James Toney are the facts that he's 38, he has no significant punching power at this weight, and out of his 7 fights at heavyweight he has only won in impressive fashion 4 times and one of those times he tested positive for a banned substance....otherwise the win over John Ruiz would be his greatest accomplishment at this weight.
Also the fact that he beat Holyfield up...an older, slower, easier to hit Holyfield who really showed his age in that fight doesn't help him. Had he fought Chris Byrd, Andrew Golota, or any other tough fighter who had been a top level fighter he would be moved up higher of course.
What does help him is that he was able to go 24 rounds with Sam Peter only being knocked down once

Nice list!
a) I agree Corrie is the most dangerous. The only guy he can't beat is Vitali. I he had chosen to defend against Lyakovich, Ruiz, Tony, Brock, Beck, Williams, Austin, etc. he could have had a long reign.
b) Sam Peter I am afraid doesnt have much of a future. He has ONE KO win the last 5 fights, against Jeromy Williams. He is going to be exposed by Maskaev who will outbox him with his far superior precission, experience and height. TOny let him have the inside and the range, for some reason that is beyond me, (why not come in a 218pounds Toney and circle him and score points?) What is he going to do against a tall very crafty fighter who fights him on the outside? He tired, beat up, and frustrated Peter loses on points.
c) Otherwise I agree with the list.

They might TKO him. He was still standing in the Vitali and the Rahman fights. And Rahman at that time and Vitali at that time were formidable opponents.
Please tell;
a) Does Corrie have a good representation in Golden Gloves Promotion (?is that the name?) Or could he do better? Why doenst he sign with King or La Hoya?
b) Does he have a good trainer? He might need a "in your face guy" like Atlas or something?
c) We all know that no fighter in his right mind would want to step in the ring with him CERTAINLY NOT MIKE SPROTT!! lol. So could there e.g. be like an elimination fight set up or something to force someone decent to meet him?

CC....the "old guard" is always going to be there. What is going on with Rahman, I haven't heard any thing from him in awhile.
