Cotto's future if he loses?

For the record, I don't think he'll lose.

Was just thinking a hypothetical situation:

If he was to lose a close decision, would he probably stay at WW, and go ahead with Arum's plan to face the winner of Margarito-Williams?

If he gets KOd, (Obviously, Zab's hand speed would play a major roll), would he retreat to 140, since he's only been at 147 for less than a year, and try to fight the winner of Hatton-JLC? (Weight drain might be a problem, plus the fact that Tony and Paul have very heavy hands)

If you were his handlers, or cotto himself, what's the best option?

I don't see him going down in weight, 147 is his most natural weight class.

If he loses, he'll do what most beaten fighters do, he'll fight some easy opponents to get his confidence back, and then 2 or 3 fights down the road, he'll get another shot at a big fight.

I would not be surprised if there is a rematch clause in the contract for this fight. He'd probably have an immediate rematch with Zab.

Depends on how he lost, if it was a close questionable decision a rematch would be a shoe in. If Zab blew him out in a round or so I agree with Sweetpea that Cotto would go back to the drawing board & rebuild against a few easy opponents. It would definitely put a huge dent in his earning & star potential though

Well I don't think it'll matter much even if he gets stopped. Cotto's style is blood and guts and he doesn't seem to change his psyche even when he's rocked.

If Miguel was to lose he'd just get back up and start fighting to get his title back

Agreed with all. As I said, purely hypothetical, and I feel that he will win.

Going back to the drawing board is the best option usually. But, Cotto is exciting, but not the biggest draw. And, If he got blew out, he would lose alot of credibility amongst the general public. So, (physically and mentally, might not be the best option) why not jump at a chance to fight the winner of the JLC-Hatton fight? Neither of those fighters, IMO, are going to be the top at 147, but I'm sure that both of their camps would jump at the fight, and a win would put Cotto right back in the thick of things, as long as he could handle the weight drain (and if the winner is Castillo, the fight might be at 147). It's a gamble, but it's also just a thought, not reality. All of these hypothetical threads about fights in the past, I figured I would make one in the present, that could actually happen.

Well you would think that the powers that be wouldn't have given Baldomir the decision either.

He gets a rematch and starts over again, he is young enough and good enough to bounce back.

i dont see how Zab can win Cotto will KO him in similar fashion to Kostya

Cotto has been waiting for a fight like this for a long time. Judah is just looking for a pay check. trust me...the name "Cotto" and the word "lost" will not come out of anybodys mouth on June 9th. We should be talking a bout "Judah's future when he loses?".....

One thing is very probable, I doubt Cotto will return to 140. He was making too much sacrifice to make the weight, and now that he has adapted to 147 this will probably be the biggest mistake he can make, and I don't think he will attempt to do it. I remember couple of years ago that he was trying to make 135 looking for a shot with Floyd, but could not make the weight. This is a fight I really want to see, but at 147. Although Floyd has the speed and movements to run from Cotto, a body attack from Cotto will not be the same as De La Hoya.
