Hatton decisions Castillo in a fight that fails to catch fire...........

The crowd were denied the much anticipated fireworks from yesterday's 'mega' clash between Ricky Hatton and Jose Luis Castillo in which Hatton out worked a lethargic Castillo to claim a wide unanimous decision victory.

The early rounds saw Hatton do some good work from the outside, boxing much the same as he did in the eraly rounds against Urango. Castillo seemed to be disinterested from the first bell and practically gave away the first 4 rounds.

A decent body shot from Castillo in the 5th had Hatton temporarily on the retreat but he was unable to take advantage and the next 4 rounds saw much of the same with the busier Hatton outworking Castillo.

Clearly tiring towards the end Hatton attempted to get a breather in the 10th only for Castillo to launch his most effective attack of the night. Hatton who was clearly struggling to keep the pace fell into clinch after clinch leaning hard on Castillo and forcing him to the ground in one exchange.

If the fight looked as if it was about to catch fire, it was quickly doused as Castillo seemingly decided he didn't have enough left to take the fight to Ricky any more.

Hatton stayed on the outside and boxed his way over the final two rounds to a comfortable decision.

Hatton paid tribute to his 'great' opponent saying he was delighted to get the win, although when pressed by Merchant he admitted he could have been more aggressive and exciting.

'What can I say Larry, the nervous energy I burned up in this fight was just incredible. It was the biggest stage of my life and the emotions got to me. Still I'm happy with my performance,'


Castillo admitted he felt sluggish throughout the 12 round fight saying that he felt weight rather than age was the major factor. He said he no plans to retire but that he would campaign next at 147 lbs with Merchant suggesting Zab Judah as an opponent.

I agree with Bilbo on this one. Hatton is going to think his way to victory and that's good enough for mwah.

Very imaginative but still favoring Hatton and antecipating Castillo's decline. Both assumptions may be unrealistic due to the fact that Hatton doesn't know how to keep the distance when he tires so... If he tires, he's done cause there's no reason whatsoever for Castillo not coming forward and put punches together and have Ricky in serious technical hazzard, remember Castillo just took one fight off when he did the least to beat Ngoudjo, before that he was at his awesome self bombing Corrales to the canvas and don't tell me 135 lbs to 140 lbs means something, it doesn't mean anything at all, maybe the layoff, not definitely the weight class... If Hatton stops coming at him with his faster sharper, stronger punches he'll have to close the distance and immobilize much more as has been his trademark recently, grabing and clinching time after time... If I was to use my imagination, I would say Ricky is gonna run instinctively towards Castillo with his intensity and Jose Luis will not give him ground either so expect head butts, nasty cuts on eyes and a lot of inactivity when they get tangled, why not a no-contest decision on an accidental head-butt?

I want to see how Hatton handles fighting going backwards because he will get forced back at times can he fight going backwards.

When I mentioned the weight I didn't mean that Castillo would be out of his depth at the weight but actually that 140 lbs is still not enough.

He's practically a full blown welter now.

If it's a barnburner I'll love it. It's just I don't see this being anything other than I described it. Hatton should have rematched Collazo imo. He got a gift and demonstrated that he knew that only too well by handing it straight back and scurrying back down to the junior ranks to reclaim the belt he had tossed aside just months before.

That in itself didn't bother too much, it was just when all these nuthugging fans justified it on the basis of him being poor against southpaws and a natural light welter.

Funny but I don't recall Ricky, Billy Graham or anybody on here bringing that up before the Collazo fight but it just became accepted Canon Law immediately afterwards. ::**
