you have hit he nail on the head with merchant. he is not focused on the fight. he sees himself as some kind of poet-philosopher who identifies the fight's (and the fight's element's) larger significance. I think he does this simply because he doesn't have a high degree of knowledge of boxing technique, skill, key factors to victory, etc., as does any good trainer and any intelligent boxer. Also, his poetry and philosophizing are far from first-rate. But most important of all, as you suggest Dark Lord, they are DISTRACTIONS from the fight. His words ruined the moment of the great knockout/accomplishment by Pavlik.

the difference in the way pavlik finished taylor and the way taylor tried to finish him in the 2nd are night and day. Taylor swung wild and spent himself and crazy punching. Pavlik took his time, he mentally selected then threw hard punches that were calculated and landed to add to the existing damage, he is a great technician when it comes to finishing a fight. JT needs to learn to be calm cool and calculated then maybe the fight would have ended in the 2nd.

The slow motion replay of the 2nd straight right hand that Pavlik landed looks fucken brutal.... :o
