Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Edwin Valero? Sounds Crazy, Or Does It?

When I get fed inside tips, also known as rumors, from figures deep inside the belly of boxing, the following statement runs through my head.

“Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?”

As information is passed onto your plate during a big fight weekend or via a late night phone call, one always has to consider the source, who is benefiting from release of information, and if this person providing you with a golden nugget is just pulling your proverbial chain.

I am not sure if this story I am about to drop passes any of my litmus tests for boxing informational scrutiny, but it sure is intriguing as anything else bubbling to the surface in the last twenty four hours and it DOES NOT include Manny Pacquiao.

This past weekend, a source close to WBA super featherweight champion Edwin Valero informed Boxing Confidential that a fight between the Venezuelan and Juan Manuel Marquez has been preliminarily discussed.

Preliminary might mean mumbled by Valero out loud while he was asleep, but my source claims that the ideas has been passed onto Valero's plate by Golden Boy Promotions. And of course, my source also states that Valero would be more than happy to fight Juan Manuel Marquez, even though the WBA champion spent Saturday night calling out Manny Pacquiao.

Once again, take this report with a grain of salt, but it does make sense, somewhat.

Juan Manuel Marquez and Edwin Valero present the biggest threats to Manny Pacquiao's reign of terror. Golden Boy who co-promotes Pacquiao and Marquez, seems to be in good standing with Valero's promoter, Teiken, and could maneuver the pair into a duel.

Why would they want to make a Marquez vs. Valero?

To keep Manny Pacquiao's marketability and profitability very high.

If Manny Pacquiao fought either Valero or Marquez next and lost, which is a possibility, the Filipino's shine would dull a bit. Remember, Pacquiao needs to produce money for both Golden Boy and co-promoter Top Rank, in order to pay off for the ridiculously high legal fees spent in the battle over the rights to the Pinoy.

The drawing power of Marquez and Valero is questionable. Marquez has never been a big ticket seller or attraction and Valero is not sanctioned to fight in the United States. An early 2008 victory by either man over Pacquiao would be a business nightmare for Oscar De La Hoya's firm.

So, why NOT have Marquez and Valero fight, with one falling to the wayside and Manny Pacquiao fighting a Jorge Solis like cookie while lining the coffers of Golden Boy and Top Rank.

Call me nuts, but the scenario does not seem far fetched.

Disagree with you here bro. JMM would win,probably via stoppage. He is the best counter puncher in boxing,and for someone wild like Valero,that is the way to win. Valero may drop JMM early,but JMM would beat him up for the rest of the fight. Also,JMM is fighting Rocky and then hopefully Manny. Finally,Valero is not licenced to fight in the USA and I don't see JMM leaving after the John fiasco!

I think this sort of conspiracy theory is sound. It would be good for Pacquaio's career if JMM fights Valero first. That's why Pacquaio's camp is creating a buzz right now that Manny wants to fight David Diaz.

Manny wants to fight David Diaz? Thats a silly,silly move. Casamayor is calling him out,he could fight the winner of Diaz v Diaz,there's Kats,the winner of Soto Guzman,JMM...they are ALL ahead oF David Diaz.

And I don't understand how it will be good for Manny if JMM fights Valero first? ???

JMM would give Valero boxing lesson Valero is very strong puncher like we all know but he is so slow and Marquez is very good boxer and will be able to avoid Valero's bombs unless Valero catches JMM cold very early then JMM wins no doubt.

good for Manny's pay. whoever wins between Marquez and Valero would bring more excitement .

Na,you're wrong there. Like I said,Valero can't fight in the States and even if he could,it would take time to market him. Not many casual fans know about him,we all do because we are such hardcore fans.And Manny doesn't need money,he must be LOADED! ;D :D :)

If JMM fought Valero it would bring one to the fore front as the biggest remaining threat. This would create a bigger fight wher Manny would only have to face one threat rather than two and still receive the glory of being better than both.

Not sold on Valero.

Have no answer to this one. I love Marquez...think he'd outbox Valero...know he would...but Valero supposedly hits like a mule kicks...so who knows.

I shouldn't even respond...but I aint sold on Valero...not yet.

of all the hype valero has been getting for the last few years, he still hasn't have a break out fight nor show any improvement of developing a better style then a raw wild brawler. valero would be an easier fight for jmm then it would be an easier fight for pac. although people say valero has power, i'm not sold cause everyone he has fought would get knocked out by all the elites specially pacman. What has showed is, valero can get drop by a b level fighter imagin one of the pound for pound fighters like jmm hitting him.

Well his fight with Mosquera was a war and remember,Mosquera was a highly regarded fighter with heavy hands and even more importantly,Valero was fighting in his backyward. A rucous,rowdy crowd,where many other fighters would have wilted. I agree he needs more top fights but he's still young,inexperienced. And sure,Manny/JMM would KO the guys Valero as koed but not in the first round nearly EVERY single time. Some of them,he touches,he kos them

ANd he got his reputation from showing his power in the gyms too. He rocked Morales to his boots in sparring. He rocked Urbano Antillion(19-0,13kos highly regarded,fought last week,looked very good) so bad that they had to stop the sparring session. So 1 thing I definitely believe in is his power. It's freakish.He's got ALOT of work to do though.

agree. the guys is basically fighting for status. valero and jmm wont make enough money coz like you said, valero is not allowed to fight in the US. they could fight in japan but i dont think it will make enough money compared to pac jmm in las vegas.

I think Valero has a better chance of beating Pac than he does Marquez. Marquez would embarrass him

Im looking forward to Valero's next fight after all of the sparring he did with Barrera.
