Mark Breland Vs Today's Welterweights
I wonder how he would perform against todays guys. Mark had a good career but as someone in another thread on here mentioned, it fell short of expectations.
I think he would do very well. Could you imagine a fight with Williams? both like 6'2" tall!hehe

What a talented fighter he was I know people talk about Duran, SRL, Hearns as the Welters but they weren't all natural Welters.
During this era we had Breland, Starling, Curry, Davis, Brown, Honeyghan, McCrory and Blocker all IMO very good fighters and all at that time considered World Class. Boy they had some great fights all together.
I think Brelands abilities were great early in his career I mean like many other Olympians his quality of opposition started off a lot better then most fighters who turn pro. The Davis fight for Breland was what IMO took out a lot from him I think he was wining the fight but the fight itself had been fought at a really fast pace and it was physical more then anything.
Breland against todays Welters:
I think Cottos too physical and would hurt Mark to the body taking away those legs and the ability to move. I'd say Cotto stops him late.
I think Mark vs. SSM would be a very interesting fight both well schooled fighters and IMO at 147 it'd be a coin toss for me. This isn't SSM the Lightweight and although SSM looked good at 147 he's only beaten Collazo there.
I think the Williamds fight would be also interesting the height is def. a plus for both. But I think WIllianms output is what would give him the win I think Williams would win a Decision.
I think Breland outboxes both Kermit & Margarito to a coll UD wins in both fights struggling just a little more with Margarito in the later stages of the fight.
Great topic Deanrw heres CC#79 on me and sorry that you haven't gotten any other responses. Maybe people haven't seen enough of Breland or they just don't care about it.

He would stir things up to say the least....I agree with Mick in a way..on how they always talk about the leonards and Hearns....Breeland is often a forgotten great...some due to his own fault but all in all a great fighter...as for who he fought and how it would turn out I am going to skip all that...Just say Breland would have caused a whole lot of trouble for the guys out there...reguardless of the outcome

Well put Daxx regardless of the outcomes Breland would have been a handful for anyone at 147 the guys skills can't be denied.

Yeah you summed it up basically like I see it. He would definitely be in the mix, just as he was in the late 80's. He lacked whatever that magical element was to make a very good fighter a great fighter, but he had a fantastic jab and sweet right hand.

Probably the best Amateur fighter ever.I would think most punchers would beat him like a Cotto,or a Cintron.He just didn't have a great jaw.

He only won the WBA title cos Honeygan gave it up. A peak Honeygan would have slaughtered him. honeygan at his peak was definately a top ten welter of alltime.

I had mad respect for Honeyghan after Curry Crushing.He looked a hundred years old Vs. Breland.Wasn't that the infamous "Stop The fight" Rampage from Dan Dierdorf (ala Atlas) when Ref almost let Honeyghan get Killed??
Never was afan of Breland.One of the first fights I ever tapped that turned me hardcore fight fan was war with Davis in 90'.All time highlight reel KO after Underated Davis,Imo, absorbed and gave back some big brutality.

No Offense, but you are overrating Honeyghan way too much. Yes he beat Curry, but Curry was ready to be beaten. He was a decent champion, but nowhere near top 10 of all time. That is a geographical motivated rating you are giving him.

Curry wanst ready to be beaten he just ran in to a boxer who was at the top of his game. Honeygan before he turned in to a brawler was an amazingly talented boxer. And geography has nothing to do with it.

Curry was P4P number 1 when Honeyghan beat him.

His win over Darryl Anthony was pretty good, Anthony was the only boxer to have ever beaten Breland in the amateurs i believe. His victory over Lloyd Honeyghan was very impressive and also check out his 2nd fight with Marlon Starling.

IMO the ones to look out for are:
vs. Starling I & II
vs. Lee
vs. Ozaki - IMO one of his finest performances.
vs. Lloyd
vs. Davis - What a battle it was, I strongly recommend this one.
