Joe Louis: America's Hero Betrayed
I hope everyone that saw that film now knows why I think so highly of Joe Louis and how great of a champion he was. He had 4 years of his prime taken away (by VOLUNTEERING!!!) and was then persecuted by the IRS for the remaineder of his career, and he still managed to win 25 title defenses and THE FIGHT OF THE CENTURY vs Max Schmelling.
JOE LOUIS IS THE GREATEST HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION IN THE HISTORY OF THE SPORT!
Re: Joe Louis: America's Hero Betrayed
The Doc. will come on after the fight out here... So I havent seen it yet.
Really looking forward to it...
Re: Joe Louis: America's Hero Betrayed
...it shows what a cunt Ali was to Joe Louis.
I understand their generations saw things differently but that's no reason to throw a hero under the bus the way he did.
Reagan did the right thing burrying Louis in Arlington...it took like 50 years but FINALLY a President did the right thing for Joe
Re: Joe Louis: America's Hero Betrayed
He got the shaft Indeed.Whatever remains of that era and Its Government bureaucracy that were responsible for treating Louis like s!!! should lower there heads in shame.
Schmeling was not the only one used and turned out by his Gov and "leaders".
Re: Joe Louis: America's Hero Betrayed
....all it took was a Presidential pardon....it's a shame no one had the guts to give him one!
Re: Joe Louis: America's Hero Betrayed
I just watched it and thought it was tremendous...
What an inspiring yet sad story...
A great champion indeed...

Really don't see the generosity in doing something for a guy who's DEAD.

The right thing to do is the right thing to do...even when no one is there to appreciate it

It was a good doc. And it was on before and after the fight.
Re: Joe Louis: America's Hero Betrayed
Considering Ali,and his friend Richard Pryor were calling for Joe to be pardoned in the late 70's
I dont see the under the bus part

Well Ali called him an Uncle Tom....well more "an Uncle Tom for the white man".
That controversial part of how Ali truly felt about Joe Louis makes it harder for me to respect him....I respect him (not a HUGE fan but I respect him) it just makes it hard to.
Joe Louis broke down barriers in a different way than Ali tried to and it seems to go unnoticed in this day and time as well as in the 60's.

Ali once whispered in his ear, when his time was nearing,"You,realy are the greatest"

I have heard things like that but I don't buy it because there was part of him that despised what Louis stood for when he should have been proud of what Louis did. I am not saying Ali should have adopted the same ways and manners of Louis but don't call him an Uncle Tom...it's not right to call a hero like Joe Louis an Uncle Tom and he should have known better.
I didn't like what the track athletes did in Mexico City in 1968 either...they said Jesse Owens was an Uncle Tom too, he was also a hero and deserving of respect.
Those things upset me....there was no need to bring down the old heroes, just disagree and don't say they never stood for anything, because Joe Louis and Jesse Owens stood for alot!

They said nothing of the sort, they were both wearing opposite gloves to show a unified front, and if they both wore them it would be a left and a right all sides unified

Dude honestly, get off the right wing sites, even ESPN debunked that last night
