Need tips on how to ride a bicycle.
Ok so I am a working man now hence less hours here but hopefully I'll get time to come online over the weekend but anyway,it takes me 40 plus minutes via public transport to get to work. Some guys there ride a bike and it takes them 10-20 mins max!!!So I was thinking of riding there but one problem,I was never taught how to!!!I haven't passed my driving test yet and even them, the location of this place, parking space etc means cycling would be easier.
Soooo.I need help from you guys. Any tips? How did you learn?Whats the easiest way?and no,I'm not riding those 4 wheeler things,no way! Man,I think I always have this weird scenarios every once in a while!!;D

Stabilizers.
It's the only manly way to ensure that if you loose your balance you don't loose any valuable man-knee skin.
Yours in manliness,

You never learned to ride a bike? What a sad and deprived childhood you must've had. Seriously though, I think you'll probably just have to practice it. It's not that hard once you get the hang of it, maybe ask a friend to help you out, it'd be a lot easier to show you rather than tell you. It's all about balance and momentum. I bought a bike and I used to ride about 45 mins each way to and from work, I got into great shape. One word of advice, if you're going to be riding is often, get a special bike seat so you don't nuke your balls. I might cost $50 or so, but get a special seat that will not cause impotence.

Wow you never learnt to ride a bike as a kid :o
That's like growing up not knowing any nursery rhymes or having never eaten ice cream,
For what it's worth though, I havn't ridden a bike probably in 20 years so would be just as scared to have a go now as you. ;)

That's just sad.
Re: Need tips on how to ride a bicycle.
As a transport cyclist I would say spend some serious time in a park getting really comfortable with it first.
In reality if you can't cycle well and there is much traffic, and especially traffic not accustomed to cyclists I wouldn't risk it.
It's hard enough to avoid getting squished when you know what you're doing let alone when you're not a confident cyclist!
Re: Need tips on how to ride a bicycle.
as an adult you'll probably find it easy. Basic principles of physics are what make a bike stand upright once its moving... all in the same way as the spinning of a top.
Just sit on one on a gentle hill and let it start rolling (make damn sure your feet can drag to help stabilize yourself at first!). Then just steer. Then do the same thing on a flat road while peddling. Once forward momentum is established you're set.
Kids struggle to learn because, well, they're kids.
Re: Need tips on how to ride a bicycle.
Step hill bike, roll, you catch on after the first couple of times.
Re: Need tips on how to ride a bicycle.
As long as you can kind of touch the ground you'll be fine... Try to borrow some kids bike so your feet touch the ground from the seat, sit on it, then push yourself along with your feet and occasionally lift them off the ground and roll with the momentum.. Eventually you'll feel comfortable with moving and not having to touch the ground/staying balanced.. Then you can whack your feet onto the peddals and really get moving...
You could even try starting on a sloping hill, so you can just push yourself a little bit with your feet, then lift them up and let the hill roll you down... (familiarize yourself with the brake before doing this :))
If you end up going with Pac's idea and using training wheels, please please please take photos for us!!

Re: Need tips on how to ride a bicycle.
The only hard thing about riding a bike is getting past your fear of it falling over when you start pedaling. Get past that, and you've got it down-pat. The 2nd hardest part would be getting used to riding longer distances. (If you've just started, you might get tired on the way :-X)
