But as you pointed out with his age and the amount of unanswered questions regarding the amount of world class fighters he still hasnt fought it does somewhat seem that PBF has somewhat dodged his way into the record books!!

Mayweather is a great.
It took me a long time to like him, but I feel that his style coupled with his boxing brain have allowed him to become a fantastic boxer.
His offence is underrated.

That's my thoughts as well... He is truely amazing.. And it's not a stretch to imagine that he COULD continue fighting, and still remain undefeated for another 10 fights. He is just that good at coming out on top inside the ring..
That being said though, it's also not a stretch to say that there is no good reason for him to be retiring from box right now.. Aside from his personal reasons..
And for a record that could have continued to grow, he will definetly be remembered for leaving boxing at the top of his game, when there were still many fighters out there that he should be fighting...
Questions are still being asked... Not if he is a great.. He is absolutely a great and no fight will change that... But top p4p fighters still fight top p4p challengers, while they can.... They don't retire...

I agree, if it was strictly up to ability he would be up there with the GOAT status, but the reality is he left the sport too soon. If he could have unified the WW division there is noone out there that could have questioned his greatness, but he cashed in and cashed out, can't blame him from a human point of view, he still has all his wits about him and has enough cash to carry him throughout the rest of his life. From a fans point of view it is dissapointing however, because we know what he could have still accomplished and there were some major tests he didn't take the big one for me is not unifying any division. But he did do some phenomenal things.

I think PBF is gonna be remembered as getting stabbed by Roger!!!!
Remember the stink he made about Roger training Forbes? Roger is trying to take money out of PBF's pocket? Then you get him to miss his paycheck so he can "insure" your paycheck, then you retire????
Roger is gonna stab him. That's my prediction. Either Floyd pays Roger the amount he would have earned from training Forbes, or he gets stabbed....

He is easily one of the best who has ever laced on gloves but there's so many people can say argue that his legacy and opposition could've used some work.
His best wins in my opinion were Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo twice (I thought JLC won the first one) and Oscar De La Hoya. Wins that people call significant that I don't really consider to be all that impressive are Corley, Gatti, and Baldomir. AND his victory over Hatton is somewhere in between the two categories.
I'm speaking as a fan of Mayweather when I say that he is incredibly skilled and talented. But his downfall when being discussed years from now or with anyone who is looking for something to say against Floyd is that he avoided fighting the best in his current weightclass. It was such a heavily talked about division yet he never involved himself with those fighters. If he beats the winner of Cotto/Margarito, Floyd just can't be denied what-so-ever.

Some excellent points Killersheep and Caleoh. I'm not hating on Mayweather but it boils down to this:
the real WW champ did not defend the real title against a single,top 10,legit WW in boxings hottest division.
Lokk at the above sentence. That's not even right! There is absolutely no doubt he is one of the most talented fighters ever and i have said it time and time again,Mayweather at 130/35 could fight all the ATG's at that weight but,140 and ESPECIALLY 147,he's lacking.
Wins over Hatton and Oscar are excellent wins,absolutely no denying that whatsoever. However,it leaves a sour taste when you think how hot 147 was at the time.The Oscar fight is cool,gave him another paper title in anopther weight class. The Hatton fight though, was a few years late and Hatton would struggle with the best10-12 WW's imo.

I agree with everything, but depending on how you mean 10-20 most talented boxers... I think there are more than 20 boxers that have lived with more physical talent than him. In fact despite him being a good athlete I do not think he is as special an athlete as I once did, and that makes his technical skills which could also mean his talent all that more important. I also think his defensive skills are top 4 for sure... I see him, Pep, WHitaker, and one other guy I can't think of are all up there, personally I think his defense is the best, but its hard to say because like you said he hasn't foughten all the best fighters at WW or even in the lower wieght categories.

I like him in the ring, you can't deny the skills. I wish he would fight the fights we all want, you can't say these guys don't deserve shots...that shit is getting old, just like him. I'm not a hater though I wouldn't sign up on a Floyd forum either.

Well I'm a big Floyd fan, I do feel he will go down as one of the greatest, and like everyone else I am terribly disappointed he opted to retire without fighting Cotto, because that would have been a modern day classic.
I don't buy the retirement though. I think he will be back and he will fight the winner of Cotto/Marg eventually. I think he was just bored with the sport and had no desire to train his ass off to fight ODLH, which is a dangerous fight for him with not much to gain.
Gaurenteed if Cotto wins, Floyd has too big of an ego to sit around and hear everyone saying that Cotto chased him out of boxing.

Well stated. Floyd Mayweather Jr is/was a great fighter but for some reason since his days at lightweight seemed to avoid the biggest challenges out there. If there was an easy way to a title or to defend one he took it.
I really do not give him that much credit for beating a bigger DE la Hoya to be honest. He did it in a very unspectacular fashion happy to eek out a decision win.
Great fighter who liked to brag a bit too much and avoid dangerous fights is how I will always remember him
