Would Cotto Have Still Given Up If...
Oscar Diaz wasn't in a coma? I have a feeling that Diaz was in the back of Cotto's mind when he started taking knees near the end of the fight.
This may have been mentioned in another thread but I have not read through everything.
Re: Would Cotto Have Still Given Up If...
Yes, he would have taken further punishment and got knocked out if he tried to fight on.
Re: Would Cotto Have Still Given Up If...
I don't think so.
Miguel was enduring severe punishment after round 8 and I feel that had he been affected by that mentally he would have taken a knee in the eighth.
Re: Would Cotto Have Still Given Up If...
Cotto did outstanding at the beggining of the fight and his boxing skills were outstanding. I just think he was tierd and annoyed with the fact that Margarito just kept coming. Cotto is powerful and Margaritos chin and determination was just a bit too much for him to take. He needs to show that he can bounce back from this loss. But Margarito looked physically a lot bigger than Cotto and that is very hard for a fighter to fight against.
The fight itself was outstanding, the best fight I have seen this year IMO. Margarito needs to move onto Williams IMO and tie things up with him. I think Cotto needs to get back into training, I hope this fight doesnt effect him because pretty much any other fighter at 147 would not be able to handle the cotto that fought for the first half of that fight.
I hope they meet again one day!
Re: Would Cotto Have Still Given Up If...
I don't think that would have affected him. I think the commentators really missed the ball on this one, he was being caught up to and hurt from a lot earlier than the tenth, there was nothing quick about the finish.
Re: Would Cotto Have Still Given Up If...
No, he just had enough and the corner realized that and threw in the towel. Own fighter.
Re: Would Cotto Have Still Given Up If...
look, by that point cotto didn't even know who oscar diaz was, shit he probably didnt know who he was.
he was tired as shit, he brain was spinning he was stumbling around the ring because he had no control of him self.
Stop making excuses
he got beat and nothing in the world that has happened before or after this fight would of changed that.

BG isn't the type to make excuses, he was merely inquiring.

Good post. I agree, Cotto was dominating much of the fight, just completely gassed out. Whether it was bodywork, conditioning, broken nose, etc.. doesn't matter. He wasn't able to finish the fight, or his fight plan. Doesn't mean he couldn't, just that he didn't. I want to see a rematch also, it was a great fight and we need more fights like they put on.

Cotto was physically exhausted. It wasn't a mental loss in my opinion. You could clearly see him running out of gas from the 8th on. Doesn't matter why, but I don't think we should read too much into it as quitting etc....

That's all it is, he ran out of gas and slowed down, began to get tagged more and was getting hurt, he did the smart thing and accepted he was getting beat and avoided unnecessary punishment.
Re: Would Cotto Have Still Given Up If...
I disagree with all of you.... of course it was mental, Cotto was not pushing his punches at the end and they still all had snap on them, not to mention he was still moving and his knees were not buckling.. I'm not saying he wasnt exhausted but what prizefighter isint during a grueling battle... Cotto surrendered end of because he was done walking thru hell;)
Margarito snatched his heart and ate Cotto's will

Conditioning is a huge factor. We can argue all day as to what came 1st the chicken or the egg. In other words, was Miguel getting caught more because he was gassed? or was Miguel gassed because he was getting caught?
Given the ease in which he was able to outbox Marg. I think Cotto was definitely gassed out. He looked more like a man who simply could not breath anymore. He took his knee and stood up, he was not dizzy etc just gassed out.
This is a winnable fight for Cotto and anybody pretending Margarito is too much for Miguel is not being realistic. Cotto will be back.
The only place he will be back is on the floor if he gets in the ring with magarito again.
Re: Would Cotto Have Still Given Up If...
Saturday night Cotto found Himself somewhere He had never been before Hell, Great fighters can come back, lets hope he can after Saturdays performance Im a bit of a fan I was impressed with what I saw, for the first time I might add. No need to pretend this...everybody knows this...
I had it 50 to 50 before the fight...if there is a rematch I'm leaning to Margarito 55 to 45 or even 60 to 40...But I still want Cotto to win it...
