Why are people now quite negative towards Cotto???
A lot of people are talking like he is done he just lost to the better man on the night thats all.Their is nothing to say he can't go back to the drawing board and beat Margarito. He has beaten good fighters like Judah,Mosely,Torres and more but now its where does he go from here? Does Cotto lack the concentration to be great? and so on.Its bloody hard to concentrate when a guy is constantly walking you down throwing punches at you i think Cotto could change a few things movement is the key why did he keep moving to the left when he should have gone to his right he needed to stick and move more. The fight was AWESOME!! both fighters were amazing we have just witnessed a true 50/50 fight and i feel Cotto is getting some negative response. He is still number 2 Welter in the world for christ sake.
Re: Why are people now quite negative towards Cotto???
His concentration is obviously a problem because he was lettnig Margarito pummel him in certain parts of the fight without responding either defensively or otherwise. Even on the ropes he should have been moving his feet laterally. I don't think he can be a good stick and move fighter because what makes him such a good puncher is that he sits down on his punches, thats the only way he knows how to punch and it makes it impossible to move in and out, but he does need to learn how to get in close and smother his opponent's punches. He needs to not drop his hands to try and look fancy off the ropes. He needs to not give up so much space for free. He is a very good fighter, but he is 27 and can still learn a thing or two. He doens't have the body type to ever move well, his legs are too short.
Re: Why are people now quite negative towards Cotto???
I was never that impressed with Cotto. I always thought him to be the lesser version of PBF in almost every aspects excepts perhaps the power and the weight. Against, Margarito, he just lost his heart.
Re: Why are people now quite negative towards Cotto???
it seems that everyone is forgetting that cotto was the naturally smaller man and he still stood in there and banged w a huge WW thats been there for over 10 years....duran moves up get ko'ed by hearns and he's great...so whatever...shit margo should be the best WW...everyone there there even the old guys shane, oscar, both started at 135... PBF,cotto, judah, none of them are natural WW. Margo should beat every one of them easily with his activity. The bigger man beating the smaller guy has never impressed me. just like bhop beating tito and oscar. SO what? exceptional small fighters would probably lose majority of the time to good big guys...look to shane and winky. or corrales - clottley.
Re: Why are people now quite negative towards Cotto???
His true fans will stick with him, thick or thin. Rest of the bunch will throw him under the bus and move on to the next bandwagon.
Re: Why are people now quite negative towards Cotto???
I don't think people are really BEING NEGATIVE about Cotto but simply talking about the fight. If you want to see negative attitudes just hear what people say about ODLH and Mayweather in here, THAT is some negative stuff. Whatever they do people will cry about it and throw all kinds of trash to them. But Cotto? Naaaaah, he lost and it’s a common topic around here since he's pretty much the forum's favorite fighter.

Big props for the comment...
This was the discussion since 2003, but people continued to overlook Marga... Then they wanted to avoid him, but this is the thing most Marga fans were saying from the start. How can PBF stay in there with a true WW who throws 100+ per round?

Lost his heart? Are you on drugs???? Now Cintron lost his heart, he gets hit hard ONCE and goes down....Cotto got hit big in every round and tried to trade with Margarito.....11 rounds with Margarito is tough stuff, Cotto has plenty of heart!
Cotto even fighting him shows he's not a guy who will back down from anyone win or lose

Boxing is full of fairweather fans.....but it ain't me babe....I stuck with Wlad and Jermain Taylor and I am sticking with Andy Lee and I'll stick with Cotto.....it's easier too considering how good of a fighter Margarito is anyway and how amazing his chin is.

It was inevitable that there would be some backlash because of the hype that Cotto has been receiving as "The Next Big Thing."
While some of that hype was justified because of Cotto's obvious skills, the fan/press response to his fights over the last year didn't seem to match what I saw.
Zab Judah fought well against Miguel and lost in a similar fashion to the way Cotto lost to Margarito, but all the attention after that fight was on Cotto -- how he was a star in the making. Shane Mosley fought Cotto almost to a draw, but again, Cotto seemed to get all the glory. Cotto then got more buzz out of his tune-up fight with Gomez than did Margarito that same night for beating a titleholder.
I just think some people are a little hungover from being forced to ride the Cotto bandwagon over the last 12 months. It's no discredit to him to be less than what some people perhaps unrealistically imagined him to be. He's still young and talented enough to be someone who we talk about for a long time.
Re: Why are people now quite negative towards Cotto???
I have to say, stylistically, experience, etc. that the outcome was so forseeable....speaking for myself.
BUT....Anyone dogging Cotto is way off here. The man fought his grapefruits off with solid skills and merits true respect. There was talk of him sitting out the remainder of the year and I think that would be unfortuante.Take some time,re gear and go into 09' fresh on a 'W'.(Forget Tony Rematch Imo :-X )All the apoligist's need to go sit in the corner and realize that the best of the best throughout history have been Beat up or Beat down but it's how they rebound that is the true story!

You can't compare the Duran situation, he was old, out of shape going in, and he had already become a legend. Duran went up in weight to face the bigger faster Leonard, and beat him the first time.
Also Margo shouldn't beat PBF, because PBF is the best in the world, and his speed would be too much for Margo to overcome. I think the really good little fighters know how to beat the bigger fighters PBF beat Corrales, Castillo, Judah, ODLH etc. Roy Jones Jr. beat Hill, Toney, McCallum, Griffin, Tarver the first time, Ruiz, etc. Hopkins beat Tarver, Winky beat Trinidad, Oscar IMO beat Trinidad, Pacquaio beat all the bigger guys he faced. Duran beat Leonard, fought a great fight with Hagler, went up to beat Barkley, etc. Toney beat many cruiserweights as he moved up then even beat some decent heavyweights. Whitaker moved up and faced many good fighters at higher weights.
Great fighters overcome adversity to beat bigger fighters. I don't think a great fihgter should be able to use that excuse unless they are fighting a big fihgter of equal skill liked Hopkins-ODLH. Cotto is a great fighter at what he does, when he can do it, but htat doesn't make a truly great fighter who can adapt to beat fighters like Leonard-Duran II or Leonard-Hearns, or Ali-Frazier II, or Ali-Foreman, Robinson against Lamotta after the first fight or any of the other examples of this. Pep-Saddler 2, Mayweather-Castillo II, RJJ-Griffin II.
Or examples like Corrales standing in there with Castillo despite his similar vulnerabilities that COtto had and banged with Castillo in the center of the ring REFUSING to go down. Cotto didn't go down by any punches the last two times, he quit inside his head. I don't think I could do differently, but you watch Holyfield-Quawi, Corrales-Castillo, Barrera-Morrales, Pacquaio against Marquez both times Pacquaio took a brutal beating in the middle rounds and still came back to even it up or win down the stretch(Marquez also showed great heart in those fights).
You ask any one of those guys about style matchups, and they would tell you to shove it up your ass, and that it didn't matter. They were going to win and thats all there was to it. Thats what Chavez said when he fought Rosario
THat is what Margarito said when he faced both Cintron and Cotto, He didn't actually say it, but he showed it, He was going to walk through heaven and hell, but nothing was going to stop him from beating these guys.
I love Cotto, and I think he is still one of the 5 best boxers in the world, but you look at Calzaghe, Pacquaio and they are made of something different. Now Cotto could change my mind, but I didn't see the same fighter that fought Judah. I saw Mike Tyson against Evander Holyfield.
Re: Why are people now quite negative towards Cotto???
Cotto is still a fine fighter. But 3 of his last 4 fights have been pretty brutal. They will take a toll on him. He needs to be careful. He should take the rest of the year off.

It's a bit ritch you saying all that when you constantly slag off Joe Calzaghe despite the fact that he's been in and won 3 genuinley 50/50 fights in the last 2 years or so. Joe is also the number 1 super-middleweight and light-heavyweight in the world.
I guess what goes around comes around.
