Is Bruno Britains Most Recognisable Boxer?
Every Friday I get Boxing News delivered to my house and this week Frank Bruno is on the cover with the title: BRUNO: Britains most recognisable boxer on the battles he's faced in and out of the ring. When reading this Lennox Lewis and Ricky Hatton both came to mind. I mean there is no doubt that Bruno was a popular fighter and when he fought Lewis he was without doubt the more recognisable of the two, but I thought that Lewis in the last few years of his career became more popular than Bruno ever was and Ricky Hatton at this moment in time IMO is more recognisable.
Is this just me favouring two of my favourite fighters and underestimating Bruno's popularity?
Re: Is Bruno Britains Most Recognisable Boxer?
I can't speak for GB at all, but I would think Lennox Lewis is currently the most recognized fighter, followed by Hatton, then Bruno.
Lewis is a regular commentator on HBO, and his fights are replayed more commonly, and he seems to pop up on everyones lists. Of course I have nothing to back this up except my perception
Re: Is Bruno Britains Most Recognisable Boxer?
I'd say Bruno is definitely the most recognisable
Just look at how many dogs are called Bruno ;)

I dont think Lewis was ever that popular in Britain. He was and is well respected but never loved the same way as Bruno or Hatton.
Lewis title defence against Botha in London was not even a sellout when you think tens of thousands went to the USA to watch Hatton and Bruno.
Re: Is Bruno Britains Most Recognisable Boxer?
I think there are more dogs called Tyson than Lewis. ;D
Re: Is Bruno Britains Most Recognisable Boxer?
Think Ive mentioned this before. We were at camp in Ashby Delasue in Nottingamshire, Frank asked me to go to Nottingham with Him to do a bit of shoping. Of we went Him driving parked up got out of the car, we were mobbed, I mean mobbed, Hundreds of them I dont know where the fuck they came from but they came and kept coming. He was giving Photos of Himself to everybody. After going back I asked Frank if it was like that every time He went out, Yes was the reply. So I said Frank the next time you go out dont invite me. Theres something about him and theres more storys. Bottom line he is a great Guy who knows where He came from. ;D

I think Bruno and Hatton were in real fights where they were likely to lose. Lewis vs Botha was onesided. People knew it too but it wasnt Lewis' fault he had no competion .

Hattons fight against Collazo? was on paper a one sided fight and loads of Brits went.
Calzaghe sold 35000 tickets to see him fight Manfrado.
Most of Bruno's fights were mis-matches but they were all sold out.
Lewis was not that popular in the UK because he was a bit to reserverd for us Brits.
But I liked hm I got to add.I was also shouting for him when he fought Bruno in Cardiff which my dad brought me to when I was a kid.

Not surprising really but I'd imagine it would be the same for Lennox, wouldn't you?
Re: Is Bruno Britains Most Recognisable Boxer?
Worked in the same Gym as Lennox for about a year, and never saw it Lennox was very reserved even shy. Not a mixer I would say, but at the time was under a lot of pressure and not sure who his Friends were. He was hard to warm to but I believe that was circumstances rather than Him Himself, He was always friendly with me and the Lads but would never let strangers in the gym.
Re: Is Bruno Britains Most Recognisable Boxer?
My mate has had Bruno and Tyson dogs ;D
Re: Is Bruno Britains Most Recognisable Boxer?
I believe if the fighter is on mainstream TV with a lot of exposure like Barry and Frank (also Henry Cooper and Naz) they become household names and in the hearts and minds of the British. Hatton has got amazing support but if he was on terrestrial TV he would be three time bigger but bank balance three times less. :-\
Re: Is Bruno Britains Most Recognisable Boxer?
I'd say Bruno proberbly was ,but Khan,Naz and Hatton must follow closely.
