Champions with great recuperative powers.
Lets hear about guys who have been knocked down or staggered a number of times but came back strong to hold on to their titles.
Larry Holmes comes to mind, he was in tough a number of times, against Earnie Shavers, Renaldo Snipes, Carl the Truth Williams, but always came back strong.
Against Shavers, I'm still not sure how a managed. Just finished watching again. What a punch. If only Shavers could have picked his shots in the aftermath of that knockdown.
Re: Champions with great recuperative powers.
Evander Holyfield = Bert Cooper, Alex Stewart, Riddick Bowe, Michael Dokes.
Matthew Saad Muhammad = Marvin Johnson x2, Yaqui Lopez x2.
Larry Holmes = Mike Weaver, Tim Witherspoon, Earnie Shavers 2, Renaldo Snipes.
Are a few that come to mind.
Re: Champions with great recuperative powers.
Juan Manuel Marquez against Manny Pacquiao. He was knocked down three times in round 1 and completely came back. He didn't win the fight, but he was the champion, and since it was a draw he technically retained his title.
Re: Champions with great recuperative powers.
yeah marquez was brilliant that night, ive been a huge fan since. pavlik against taylor was pretty good too. archie moore against durell always sticks out in my mind though.
Re: Champions with great recuperative powers.
Joe Calzaghe has been knocked down a number of times but never seems to fazed by it.
Tito also used to get knocked down a bit but usually got up and won the fight.
Re: Champions with great recuperative powers.
thats a good point mate, i cant believe i didnt think of calzaghe, must have had too many beers ha! joe must be one of the best examples of recent times really when you think about it.
Re: Champions with great recuperative powers.
I don't know if I've ever seen Calzaghe all that wobbly. Like eagle says, he never seems fazed. Holmes has wobbled and staggered lots of times.
It's funny how things go. take on on the chin, and some guys go down and seem to bounce back up (Calzaghe) others get up but stagger around a bit before finding their legs.
Re: Champions with great recuperative powers.
Calzaghe of more recent times comes to mind...
I would say Roberto Duran.
Re: Champions with great recuperative powers.
in his first knockdown against byron mitchell, calzaghe was definately shaken.

Juan Manuel Marquez..Joe Calzaghe, Diego Corrales, Kelly Pavlik
Zab Judah as he can dance right after being knockdown.;D
Re: Champions with great recuperative powers.
Joe Calzaghe was my first thought, he just gets up and carries on throwing without ever looking like he was trying to recover.
Re: Champions with great recuperative powers.
Arturo Gatti in Gatti - Ward III
Re: Champions with great recuperative powers.
Re: Champions with great recuperative powers.
Kelly Pavlik seems to get wobbled pretty often and recovers pretty well.....
