Cotto vs Chop Chop Corley
Hey all! Just watched this fight and can't help but to think Manny will hurt him the same way Corley did in the 3rd round of their fight. Corley hurt Cotto with a right hook from the southpaw stance and I feel Manny would too. I think that Corley was strong but not as dynamic as Pac... Or is this an unfair assessment being that Cotto was a lot younger then and still dealing with a learning curve a the time. What do you think?

first off Cotto was already having trouble making weight, Corley's power was underrated (he managed to rock Judah and Mayweather), and Cotto has since fought opposition that is leaps and bounds above Corley and has performed very well, using the same logic as the one you put forth, Pacquiao will probably fold cause well he was stopped very early by body shots, and Cotto is the best body puncher with killer power that he's faced in a long long time
Re: Cotto vs Chop Chop Corley
yeah that a while ago, and since cotto has been at his proper weight he's only seriously been hurt by margo. And that was from an accumilation
Re: Cotto vs Chop Chop Corley
It's sorta funny how before Dirrell fought Froch people brought up how he was knocked down in his 7th pro fight as evidence of a suspect chin. But if someone brings up the Corley Cotto fight in terms of him being stunned people will say it was a while ago and it doesnt count now ;D
Re: Cotto vs Chop Chop Corley
I fully expect Cotto to be stunned this fight but Cotto has maybe the best recovery in all of boxing right now. He's been stunned multiple times and often his best moments in the fight come immediately after he's been buzzed. Seriously, it's a pattern and if Judah could sneak in the left hand as Cotto comes forward then Pacquiao surely will. Will that be enough? I don't think so. This is a GREAT fight.
Re: Cotto vs Chop Chop Corley
Im with AMAT on this one, Cotto is as cool and measured operator as there is in Boxing, sure he might get stunned but he keeps his wits and manages to be effective and dangerous even if he's seeing stars..
JMM wobbled Pac a few times with his counterpunching and IMO Cotto will inflict more damage at 145+ than Marquez will when he lands clean on Manny.
I am not convinced that Pac can take the kinda punishment a solid guy like Cotto can dish out.
Re: Cotto vs Chop Chop Corley
Yeah i think it very possible that Pac can hurt Cotto. I think the chop chop fight is a good point. The reason being is that chop chop was a smaller fighter with decent power (not great) but he was able to land a nasty shot that had cotto on queer street. Chop chop did this not with power but with speed and timeing. Chop Chop was able to turn cotto and box and move the whole fight untill the dumb ass ref stopped it. Then we hear one of the all time great bias Jim Lampely comments. "The ref stops a fight that Cotto was going to win anyway". What fight were you watching Jim?
Now with that being said PAC and Chop Chop have very different styles.
Re: Cotto vs Chop Chop Corley
Great speed almost always conquers great power. Pac is definitely the faster fighter. Cotto is certainly not slow...in fact his speed is underrated...but if he goes into this fight purely trying to chase Pac, pin him against the ropes, and hurt him...he will be in big trouble. Another thing people haven't mentioned much...Pac and Cotto in fact have the same reach. If Cotto comes into the fight a bit weak from trying to make 145...trying to run after and catch the faster guy will make him vulnerable. I think to have great success against Pac, you need to have great counter punching and timing...like Marquez. Pac loves to throw himself forward when he tries to throw flurries...and he is often off balance. Cotto needs to utilize his great jab and draw Pac in. Countering him and than setting him up for some hard shots. If Cotto comes into this fight in a strong mental state and fights intelligently...he has a chance. But unlike popular opinion, he should not try to brawl. People simply think that if a fighter is naturally bigger and stronger...he has to impose his strength. That is only the case if your opponent isn't much faster than you. Otherwise...you have to fight a technically smart fight to deal with the speed...and set up opponent. Or you will throw and miss and get tagged and eventually tire out.
Re: Cotto vs Chop Chop Corley
cotto really doesnt take punches well, and pacquiao will hurt him bad with the first left straight he lands, but the cotto that fought corley had barely any boxing skill, hes a way better fighter now
hes also learned not to let himself get hit :D
i think back before he fought corley and torres he thought he could just be oblivious
Re: Cotto vs Chop Chop Corley
The only way i see cotto being hurt by manny is if cotto underestimates him. If he treats him a legit opponent that can hurt him manny will be bashed to pieces.
Hard too imagine Cotto going 12 with shane without ever really being hurt only to be hurt by manny.

I agree, Cotto is systematic in his approach and should be able to take him apart with better directed power shots. Manny may get lucky and catch him on the move but he sure as hell would have to pounce on it right then and finish it or he would pay over the distance.

People are using that logic. :)

DeMarcus Corley also shook up Floyd Mayweather Jr, more than once in there fight. In the 3rd round he hit Floyd Mayweather Jr, with a straight left hand, that buckled Floyd Mayweather Jr's knees. And in the 4th round he rocked Floyd Mayweather Jr back with an overhand right ?
A similar punch to what stunned Miguel Cotto, there was also another moment in that round. Where DeMarcus Corley, hit Floyd Mayweather with two overhand rights that hurt Floyd Mayweather Jr aswell.
DeMarcus Corley has some pop and is slightly underrated, he was a bit unlucky against a prime Zab Judah.
Re: Cotto vs Chop Chop Corley
PBF wasn't that damn hurt.
Re: Cotto vs Chop Chop Corley
I was surprised to see Chop hurt Floyd. It was a right and Floyd did fall into the ropes and cover up for a short moment. Floyd smiled and tried to play it off. It was a great display for PBF but Corley was game.
