Anyone else think Pavlik is ruined?
Ever since he was dominated by Hopkins, Pavlik seems to be on a downward spiral. This may be a long shot but I see his carreer ending up similar to Jermain Taylors in a sense. I know an infection is an infection but the postponing of these fights, the arrest, getting drunk, falling through glass windows ect..... I think this is a classic case of someone who can't handle losing. I didn't ever see him beating paul williams anyway? Does anyone else think his mind isnt in the game or what?
Re: Anyone else think Pavlik is ruined?
I figured Williams being a southpaw and very active would give Pavlik a tough fight anyway but Pavlik is a mystery right now, his hand is hurt he may never have the power he once had, he might be an alcoholic which may affect his mental state and his training, and he hasn't fought in a long time.
All good reasons why he might get picked off by a lesser opponent than Williams.
Re: Anyone else think Pavlik is ruined?
Well I don't know if he is or will be on a downward spiral. He might be in a depression but one doesn't know. I think he just needs to get busy plain and simple. I am one of the very few who thinks he will stop Williams.
Re: Anyone else think Pavlik is ruined?
Pavlik needs to stay at 160 where his power is crazy good,in his two fights above that weight he just doesn't seem to have the same pop for some reason. I don't think he's physically done, but mentally he could be done. He used to be one of them guys that didn't do much talking outside of the ring and let his fists do the "trash" talking, seems like he's letting his mouth do it more and more, plus the alcohol might be fucking with him. I don't think he's done tho if he can re dedicate himself to training, remember what got him to the top, realize he's not invincible/unbeatable and he'll do just fine. He's never going to be a slick boxer therefore certain styles like hopkins' will always present a challenge to him, but there is only one hopkins. He needs to get that infection taken care of and get back in the ring.
Re: Anyone else think Pavlik is ruined?
Pavlik has already come close to dying in relation to this infection. The treatment almost killed him

Re: Anyone else think Pavlik is ruined?
I need to see him fight before saying he's ruined
Re: Anyone else think Pavlik is ruined?
naw in a weak division and with his 1-2 he can still beat alot of guys
Re: Anyone else think Pavlik is ruined?
really hope he isnt finished
Re: Anyone else think Pavlik is ruined?
He's not ruined just glaringly exposed.
Re: Anyone else think Pavlik is ruined?
pavlik brings so much to boxing he is like a ricky hatton, will always have the working class following him. i always thought pavlik was a pretty easy nights work for calzaghe. maybe we being a little harsh on him as stated earlier hopkins is not your average fighter he is a smart tough SOB & i stated b4 he fought hopkins that pavlik had nothing to gain from fighting him
Re: Anyone else think Pavlik is ruined?
I disagree, had Pavlik KO'd Hopkins he would have earned a great deal of respect.
Pavlik just fights in a bully style, he has slow hands, he rarely moves his head (but he has decent defense which makes up for that), his punches aren't sharp they are the Foreman-esque thudding power shots and some guys find that a lot easier to prepare for, for some odd reason.
I think Kelly has some bigger issues than boxing is all and I think he's feeling sorry for himself for losing to Hopkins that bad. Lots of fighters have battled drugs and alcohol outside the ring, Kelly isn't the first and he won't be the last...he just needs to chill out from boxing for a while and heal up mentally, physically, psychologically....he could return as a better fighter or he could just be happier away from the sport
Re: Anyone else think Pavlik is ruined?
im answering too this thread without reading everthing thats been written, my view is that the staff infection is bullshit, i happen too no that pavlik suffers with deppression, me myself have suffered with it, its no joke. my view is that kelly has not dealt with the hopkins loss too well, who can blame him he was schooled like an infant was fucked by a senior. no shit. thats the way it goes. my view is that he has lost his confidence and his invincabilatee that he once had has gone, and too a fighter of his aura is his world and i think he has lost that, i hope he gets it back
Re: Anyone else think Pavlik is ruined?
I don't think Hopkins had anything to do with his current situation. After the Rubio fight, he got a cortisone shot on his knuckle. A staph infection developed at the needle sight. He got treatment, it never helped so he found himself sidelined. He got into trouble during this down time but it was not the first time. he had episodes long before Hopkins of getting drunk, being a dick and once for beating up a cop etc.
The infection lead to two operations over the summer due to just not going away. It was hard to cure because of it being located in one of his extremities. They thought they finally had the infection beat. Setting up fights and the forced cancellations caused them to get desperate. he got aggressive treatment in September and he ended up almost dying from shock because of it and ended up spending 5 days in the hospital.
Although they think the infection is gone now, his lack of the use of his hand, the scar tissue buildup etc is preventing his from making a fist. That will come back in time. His situation is just having an injury that just took much longer to fix than they ever anticipated. It has lead to a long layoff but I bet we will see him back in the ring no later than January/February with a ton of rust to work off.
