Inspired by Scrap (videos)
I was inpired by the teachings of Scrap to make this thread. None of it is my own stuff, just some stuff I came across that reminded me of some of the ideas and theories explained by him.
Basically I found a youtube channel filled with videos of a Japanese Martial Arts Training/ fighter rehab center. As I watched some of these videos I immediately thought of Scraps theories and ideas. Some of them, I know for a fact he has taught/suggested in one form or another, others just seem like they might be inline with some of his techniques and methods.
A lot of this stuff may be for martial artists but I think some of em can be really useful for Boxers as well. But I'll let you be the judge of that, either ways, there's some interesting stuff. Let me know what you think...
I'm assuming this works balance and posture
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXrYJPZDr90
similar to the one above
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Im0Z7WkK-_g
I know you wouldnt want to be standing with such a narrow stance, nor would we be interested in kicking, but interesting drill nevertheless
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoRoD6dQjdA
this ones a given... as the title states... power and balance
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PD5-R4ddgaY
power and speed i guess
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24l98o_lzhg
conditioning (the type you would have loved if you were a child)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaCqn3oQbAk
stretch (she sounds like she's enjoying that a bit too much)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6q4rBpOPcY
Strengthening those hips and those legs maybe?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWfrjtoJOwM
Similar to one of the vids Scrap had posted, Scraps version seems alot better its called "one" on his youtube page
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peSryeaa2OM
again this is similar to a drill I learnt from scrap, but his is again different
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfNb85Qh6gg
this may be either really bad or really good for a boxer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1c4zUrNWdw
heres another balance one that looks like some fun
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihy9UBG6k_k
he see's the target, closes his eyes, then throws a shot.. I've done a drill which is basically opposite.. keep ur eyes closed, the person holding pads says "now" and you must open your eyes find the target and throw the shot as quick as possible.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-PZn9EssYg
possibly covering the dominant eye?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-xkVH-S0Js
proprioceptive training i suppose
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCi0drMhFGI
eyes closed, using sound as a stimulus to train for reaction and speed
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAqfkCpXaNs
not sure exactly what that would do, but looks interesting..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U660HEn-j5E
thats all for now.. hope some of you guys will find a few of those interesting. I'm interested on peoples thoughts on some of these. There's tons more, I didnt go through all of em, but if anyones interested the users name is "sunliveorio" on youtube. People that are into martial arts will most definitely enjoy some of the vids there.
Oh annnd here's a recent video of Bernard Hopkins training.. @ 1:10 he starts doing something I could see Scrap suggesting.

I know the stuff you do is a bit different, and some of the things I've seen from you are far more complex. Regardless, when I came across these I just thought 'man the only person I could see teaching using some of these methods is Scrap" But I guess these Japanese guys might be on to something too huh, in their own field of Martial Arts ofcourse.
Also I could imagine the uni having drawn out processes for putting together a book and video. Couldn't you just put it together independently or with the help of a 3rd party if they dont straighten things out in a timely fashion? or possibly even just have somebody on your behalf working out all the details in preparation so you dont have to deal with the headache until they're ready to start putting things together? I dont know, I'm talking outta my ass... I just cant wait to see this book and video, god damn it ;D (yea thats right I'm going to see instead of read the book, and see instead of watch the video, because I probably wont have a clue as to whats going on 90% of the time)
annnd tell Mrs Scrap pleaaaasee and that there are hungry children overseas that are begging for new stuff... I'm sure she'll understand ;D
Re: Inspired by Scrap (videos)
on Hopkins training vid @ 1:10, is the elastic tension a balance drill, posture drill or does it strengthen the legs for dynamic footwork?
Or is it a combination? I think I would like to try to rig up that contraption.
Re: Inspired by Scrap (videos)
The principle of pro receptive is what its all about in my opinion, you cant go wrong when your training your body to do its job better, 1 of these i like is where hes sat on the fitball very good core workout, or you can lay on the fitball and ive been messing around laying on a fitball while trying to hold a ball with my feet once you get a feel for it and get control its quite a fun workout for the core and itll hit every nuck n cranny.
I like the idea of the 1 knee on the ball in a sort of stance drill i just think it could be 10x better if thought about a lot more, taking the stability away from that back leg good and all but i dont rate how their doing it really, there are better ways.
i can say anyone that truely gives pro receptive a shot will see results in strength and speed, after almost 1 year on scraps regime i can safely say that im so much more stronger and faster than i was before, it also carries through to the weights which surprised me as i havent touched weights in a year (resistance yes but not weights) as i hit the gym to put some weight on for the winter and so ive got something to burn off through next year and i was out squatting the guys i was training with by 25kg, out cleaning them by 5-10kg and they are dedicated bodybuilders outweighing me from 1 and a half to 2 stone training 4-5 times a week lol, they hammered me on the benchpress thought but it never was my strongpoint, ive got arms like an erangatang.
Whats your opinion on pro receptive youve done student? i find it seems like many dont like spending time doing things like this because they dont understand whats going on and how pro receptive effects the body. also because they havent seen mayweather do it which would surely have more people training like this without thinking 'is this even doing anything for my boxing?' automatically they think well mayweather does it so it must be improving me as a fighter, it must work, stick with whats safe. fuck that experiment take risks, if its a waste of time fuck it its a lesson learned at least, personally i think you cant go wrong with pro receptive if you keep it sport specific.
I can say myself i was sceptacle at first as to how my strength and speed where goingto be on the new regime, but now that i understand more and have felt and seen the progress i would urge anyone to try it, you may feel like your wasting time but stick at it and the results will speak for themselves over time, this stuff works and will give you such a control and awareness over your body and what its doing that you wouldnt believe.
Re: Inspired by Scrap (videos)
In relation to the first 2 videos (on the Swiss ball.)
I like the posture of the knees, but when shadow boxing, the movement of the hips seems to be restricted so I wonder if it translates to boxing directly.
Re: Inspired by Scrap (videos)
The Hip Flexus and Groin are working overtime to stabalise movement. When released from stabalised dutys, its qiute surprising the results ;D
Re: Inspired by Scrap (videos)
So the additional loading will actually translate into smoother rotation once the exertion is removed?
Makes sense
Re: Inspired by Scrap (videos)
Hips dont move a lot, what moves them is the knees and feet. With those being used to stabalise, the psosos and back compensate, with the abs for mobility to do.
Re: Inspired by Scrap (videos)
Understood, thanks for that Scrap.
Reading a very relevant article now.

Well, I personally haven't had a lot of experience with proprioceptive training yet. Just some of the things I picked up here and there from reading Scraps posts.
Some of those, I felt the difference right away. Others not so much. But that can normally be attributed to either not doing it right, not understanding it and/or not doing it enough.
Just like anything else in life you need to keep working at it to really feel a difference. So I'll definitely be sticking to it and see where it takes me.
I actually really enjoy it, because it's different. It not only works you physically but also mentally, because u need to really think about what you're doing and how its benefiting you. Also some of the exercises are more challenging (almost like a game) than some of the more traditional things so that keeps it entertaining as well.
I've always been one to look for alternative methods to do things, because I feel that sometimes different approaches are needed to achieve a higher level.
With that said I continue to do all the traditional work as well, while I'm in the gym. On the weekends when I'm at home I spend some time trying some of these things and I really do enjoy it.
I know what u mean by alot of ppl wont bother with things like this because they dont see the big names doing it. I have guys always tell me "yo you should try ... i saw ... doing it man"
and it's always something like smacking a medicine ball on ur stomache, or shadowboxing with dumbells or ankle weights.. and when you tell em, why increase the risk of injury, they always tell u cuz boxing's a tough sport.
I've noticed theres generally 2 type of ppl, one that looks for miracles exercises expecting to do it once and be able to conquer the world after. And the other that think everything MUST be HARD and PAINFUL. People need to realize that theirs different methods of achieving things and its best to try different things and see how you're body reacts to it. Doesnt need to be hard and painful, but you have to put your effort and dedication into whatever ur doing.
Anyways, i'll stick to it, and let you know how I feel in a year or so ;)
btw, for the one where the guy has one knee up on the exercise ball.. I was thinking maybe thats not such a good idea because it's putting all the weight of the front leg. I noticed you said you would do something similar but differently to improve that exercise. Anything that you would possibly be able share with us?
Re: Inspired by Scrap (videos)
Not a good idea, too much will give bad hip alinement.

I agree 100% student i could go on and on about the benefits and i think youve found one of them yourself the fact that it is fun and refreshing, the reason most never make it in sports like boxing is they burn out, be careful not to over do it set yourself week breaks throughout the year and change up training so its not the same all the time, it might not be working your weak points the best that you could be but its better than getting fed up and quitting in the long run isnt it? the next thing i think is like you said the concentration required to do a lot of things is almost like meditation in a way, itll really teach you how to focus on the task at hand, which is very important in boxing when youve got to keep your head clear and stay focused even if your taking a paggering which lets face it in most sports the same focus is needed but its not impeeded by someone trying to take your head off.
I would like to share student but i feel its not my place im afraid, scrap has being very generous in the things hes taught me to say the least and i wouldnt want to go around telling things he might not want up on a forum, but the most important thing is im still learning and im just a student myself, allthough i really like to try and help anybody i can especially people as eager as yourself im still just a noob to this myself lol, allthought martial arts has been a big part of my life for quite some time meeting scrap has made me realise i dont know jack yet lol. if you look on these forums scrap has allready shared quite a few absolute gems that i swear by and use as a part of my regime religously. hes the man you want to be talking to, but like scrap would say without seeing you in person its very hard to tell you what is going to help because everyone is different but im sure hell have a few things you could do safely by yourself.

Not a problem at all man... I completely understand why he wouldnt want certain things up on public forums. I can respect you for keeping it that way and respecting the secrets he's entrusted you with.
Scraps already been generous enough and shared a lot on here with us, and I haven't even fully taken everything in yet, so I got a long ways to go, just to understand the things that are already on here.
I probably shouldnt get ahead of myself and look for a million new exercises and drills before mastering the ones I've already been given anyways.
And yea, forsure working in person would be ideal, but unfortunately I cant take a train across the atlantic ocean.. But who knows what the future holds
