Re: The Thrilla in Manila
Both fighters should've retired after this fight, it was 100 degrees and 95% humidity and Ali couldn't stand up to have his hand raised in victory, doing the post fight interview from a stool in the middle of the ring. Joe never recovered. He fought again in 1976 and big George really finished him off.

Saw this live... fight was inside a cauldron, the Araneta Coliseum, somewhere in the heart of Cubao, Quezon City, 36 years ago! Scalded me with boxing for life!

Wow! you got to see a piece of boxing history, and/or one of the greatest HW fights ever.
This documentary "Thrilla in Manila" put the focus on Frazier rather then Ali, it was really a documentary about Joe. This was done about 4 years ago when Frazier was 63, it was a good thing they did it since Joe just recently passed away, he got to tell his side of things. Anyway, excellent Documentary.
Re: The Thrilla in Manila
yep, its strange I seen this fight just once in full in late 80s and couldn't believe what I was watching.
But its not a fight I have wished to see again if you know what I mean :-\

Re: The Thrilla in Manila
The thing that got me on this doc was when they showed Frazier the fight.
After about 30 seconds Joe says to himself "Too far away Smoke."
A thinking fighter in a way I hadn't thought about before.
Re: The Thrilla in Manila
That was truly a brutal fight in hostile conditions by 2 fighters that would not give each other an inch. They left whatever they had left in that ring, absolutely amazing fight.

Yup, and Frazier said it was the first time he'd seen the fight, the reason likely being, that it probably wasn't a very pleasant memory for him. In my mind, this Doc is the best ever done about a boxer.
P.S. I wanted to bitch slap that douche Ferdie Pacheco and kick his teeth in for calling Frazier "dumb", the pretentious, condescending, asshole.

It's amazing the amount of energy hatred can produce, Joe said at the end that he was fighting on instinct.
Re: The Thrilla in Manila
Good documentary.
It really shows Ali up for being the nasty bastard that he is/was and also shows up the media for showboating people who are really quite despicable and ignoring others who are really so much better as genuine human beings.
Ali was always a cunt, I have always been fairly convinced of that.

But at least I am not a segregation advocating racist nutjob. Ali has always been a nasty piece of work and Frazier has always been given the wrong end of the stick.
Those are the facts.
Re: The Thrilla in Manila
Ali apologised for that nonsense about the space ship coming to save the black people. Ali went way too far with the abuse against Frazier. Other than that he was a legend. :)
