Re: Did the eye save cotto?
No Cotto would have seen the fight to points and he may have permanently damaged Antonio's eye which is why the doctor probably stopped it.
Re: Did the eye save cotto?
Before this fight I thought if Margarito's eye holds up the result will be the same as the first fight but the Cotto that showed up last night had a better gameplan, boxed smarter and looked stronger than in the first fight. Even if the eye held up and wasn't damaged I think last nights Cotto takes a UD 9 - 3 or 8 - 4.
Re: Did the eye save cotto?
I haven't seen any sign of Cotto slowing down during the bout and no reason to imagine that he would have faded in the last 2 rounds so far. He did look in tip top condition and Pedro Diaz is a known specialist to get his guys in shape, I believe the 2 rounds would have been more or less the same as those before; Cotto spinning around a slow bull and pinning him up in the fact with stiff jabs and straight shots.
Re: Did the eye save cotto?
This was a brilliant display of boxing from Cotto, he was evasive and still powerful. Margarito was never in the fight other than as a punching bag. No wonder Floyd never mentions Cotto as a possible opponent, he would have a tough time.
Re: Did the eye save cotto?
It helped but even if Margarito's eye wasn't as bad as it was, Cotto fought a very smart fight regardless.
Re: Did the eye save cotto?
Not at all imo, and what ifs like that don't really work anyways.. Fact is Margarito's eye did get mangled as most suspected early in the fight.. Who's to say Cotto didn't expend more energy than he would have otherwise trying to target it? Looked to me like Cotto just conserved his energy better in the early going and had a smart gameplan. Margarito is about as accurate as Kid Thunder anyways, he could probably fight with a blindfold on and land the same amount of punches he normally does.
Re: Did the eye save cotto?
that eye even prior to the Pac fight had a history of swelling and cuts. Margarito had 2 fights against Daniel Santos years ago stopped because of cuts. Which eye? His right eye. Margarito does an okay job protecting his left eye as a conventional fighter, but he never has been great at protecting the right eye.
It has always been open to a conventional jab and left hooks. Or against a southpaw the straight left.
Re: Did the eye save cotto?
There were just 2 differences in this fight.
1) Cotto has learned to clinch (which I despise)
2) Margarito's eye is fixed, but gets easily swollen as a result of surgery
I still regard Margarito as the better fighter over 12. I would also like to see a final matchup with Margarito having one more fight just to see if he can get through a fight without turning into 'one eyed Willie'.
Re: Did the eye save cotto?
And look at Cotto's face, it was just as swollen after 9 last time. It was just Margarito who had the swelling issues this time out.

how the hell is Margarito the better fighter when he barely won a single round in the fight and hadn't hurt Cotto or landed anything of note in any round of the rematch :-X

Sorry if I'm misremembering your posts in other threads (and I'm too lazy to look back through the multi-page related threads), but I thought your position on Cotto-Margarito 1 was neutral as to whether or not Margarito cheated. If that's the case, you can't really say that there were "just" two differences in this fight. Unless you've concluded that the first fight was on the up-and-up, you have to at least allow for the possibility that there was a pretty big third difference, too.

Because he won the first fight and lost this one on a technical decision. He has beaten Cotto more soundly than Cotto has beaten him.
Margarito rarely does massive amounts in the early going and this was no different. Physically the final 3 is where Cotto sinks. He did it against Pac/Mosley/Margarito and that's just the way Cotto is. However, it is the final 3 that is the true barometer and over that stretch I don't think Cotto can take rounds off of Margarito and Margarito would have his impact at 7 and beyond with a good eye.
Cotto was lucky he got Margarito post surgery. Margarito is all wrong for Cotto and I still believe that.
Re: Did the eye save cotto?
I'm not sure Miles actually watches boxing anymore, just decides he likes one fighter and not the other then tries to be clever about it after the fact.
