At first, it was supposed to be Cassius Clay vs. Floyd Patterson
Let's be honest here, he went up in weight to fight Ali for money. he knew he was finished , 2yrs before he got put to sleep by Smokin' Joe in round 2 . He got his chance, took his money and got beat. Don't fuckin whinge about it afterwards. He didn't have to take the fight, nobody twisted his arm behind his back.
So he wanted to fight Ali in '68. so fuckin what. I wanted a Ferrari last Christmas, guess what........ I didn't get it! how could he fight Ali in '68? Ali was locked up ffs.:rolleyes:

at the time, except for Utah.
The money was there for Cassius $300,000.
But the 'greedy coward' wanted more.

There's no doubt Bob Foster was a great fighter, probably one of the best LHW's ever, but he was a LHW. Let's not forget that in 1968, Ali would've been in his Absolute Prime, and this is what makes him so great. for all the things Ali achieved, he did them either side of what would've been the 3 finest years of his career!
Yeah, Ali maybe did try to chip Foster for a bit more dough, but the reality is because it was Ali that brings the money, not Foster.
And anyway, how would it have even been possible for them to fight in 1968?

It was up to the 'individual' State Boxing Commissions to decide if they wanted
to sanction a Cassius Clay bout.
In June 1968, the State of Utah Boxing Commission approved a bout that involved
Cassius Clay and Bob Foster.
Seems that Cassius was offered $300,000 ~ plus an additional $30,000 in Training
Expenses.
Bob Foster was to receive $60,000 ~ plus an additional $7500 in Training Expenses.
Things were moving well, until Cassius wanted nearly all of the $360,000 offered
'total' fight purse.

a $300,000 Fight Purse. I need $350,000 to walk into the Ring."

In what sense "Fraud"? I mean if you're trying to say "he's not a particularly nice chap!", well yeah, there is other evidence of that, his verbal bullying of Joe Frazier, his responses and annoyance on the Michael Parkinson Show. Yeah, he wasn't sweetness and light, but he still was capable of making the whole World (except you, of course) love him and be in total awe of him.Quote:

It was 'he' who labeled himself 'The Greatest'.
That is not the way it's done.
That would be like a Baseball Player calling himself 'The MVP'.
Cassius was a very good fighter, who had levels of excellence, but
who also was pretty bad in many bouts.
A Great Entertainer, yes. But he came along when Heavyweight Boxing was
sputtering along, and it needed an injection of life.
Luck, timing and a great publicity team was Cassius Clay's ......'best friend'.

You see.... Billy seems to be privy to some astounding information regarding Muhammad Ali.
Information that proves several things:
1. Ali carefully orchestrated the circumstances under which he fought everyone in his career. He fought them either too early, too late.... or just plain picked on them while they were vulnerable. I wouldn't be surprised to find out from Billy that Ali planted flu bugs in opponents training camps to make them sick before the fight.
2. Ali was scared of everyone he ever fought. They all knew that, but somehow Ali was able to buy the judges and referees to cut him some slack..... to favor him when things were going rough. It's a miracle he didn't lose more often. Again, thanks to Billy's incredible research skills, we too can be privy to this information.
3. Ali didn't do all that much for the sport of boxing. That is just a myth, perpetuated by boxing writers and the media, who were also being paid off. Why.... without Ali, the world would've been flocking to see Quarrys and Folleys fighting each other. Interest in boxing would've skyrocketed, even more than it did with Ali.
4. Billy hasn't even touched on this yet.... but I'm sure pretty soon we'll be reading about how Clay (Billy chooses to ignore Ali's God-given right to change his name. Who the hell does Clay think he is, anyway?).... we'll be reading about how Clay suffers from horrible flatulence, and how Clay is the world's worst tipper.
I don't know about anybody else, but I for one am sitting on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next useful tidbits of information from Billy. We are so lucky to have within our midst someone with the awesome research abilities on one Bill Paxtom.
