This fight was the chief support on undercard to the Brook - Jo Jo Dan contest last night. Some of you will disagree but it's got to the point where I'm not sure we will ever see another knockout where the ref counts to ten, in a UK ring again.
Do the ten count - Howard. First Groves - Froch 1. Now this ? How does this guy keep on getting these gigs ? Why be so over-dramatic ? And get his gum shield out and then every1 all rushing to the ring. It's almost like he wants every1 to know "Look at how safe I'm being !! I'm just so safe !! I don't want the Boxers to get hurt !!" Which no-one does. But putting a speed limit on the Indy 500, means that's it not the Indy 500.
This knock down was not as bad as it looked. It's not like Hatton - Pac Man. Where Hatton was still. Etches raised his head at the count of 3. It's almost like UK officials are just so full of their own importance that they want a bit of the spotlight. You would NEVER have a Gatti - Ward 1 or a Corrales - Castillio fight in a UK ring. They would have been stopped long before.
I speak as a person who has boxed. I have seen guys in the gym, knocked down hard, sometimes in a face first, Roberto Duran - Tommy Hearns style, but then because of their fitness right back up at the count of seven.
Give him a chance to beat the count and if he does'nt then by all means rush in with the medical staff. Don't get me wrong I thought Etches fought a poor fight and (IMO) on that showing he does not have what it takes to get to the very top level. But I still feel that was a bad stoppage.
I mean - No one wants to see this

Nor do we want to see George Forman - Joe Frazier 1, where Frazier was bounced round the ring, lifted up in the air b4 Eddie Futch said enough is enough. Nor do we want to go back to the 40's and 50's in the Louis, Marciano and Ray Robinson era were a fighter had to be literally beaten unconciouss on the ropes before the ref would stop it (And often even then it was the fighters corner who stopped it by throwing in the towel)
But there has to be point were we say enough is enough.
Re: Howard Foster - At It Again - Another Poor Stoppage.
To be absolutely fair, it was more of a Froch Groves rematch stoppage: A tiny bit premature but fully justifiable.
Re: Howard Foster - At It Again - Another Poor Stoppage.
Etches said he remembers nothing about the knockdown, heard the count of 5 and saw Foster standing over him, would have liked to get up but understands why Foster stopped it
Re: Howard Foster - At It Again - Another Poor Stoppage.
I agree we have seen many fights stopped to soon, but that was a cracking punch and he was flat on his
back, Etches I feel was done that was a heavy knock down.
Re: Howard Foster - At It Again - Another Poor Stoppage.
Foster saved the young lad from taking more punishment which wasn't needed. Highly doubt he would have beaten the count. Completely fair stoppage and that IMO will be one of the best kos we will see this year in the UK.
Re: Howard Foster - At It Again - Another Poor Stoppage.
The count of 10 has gone the way of the dodo bird and in most if not all cases for good reason. This fight was no exception. I used to almost throw my tv out the window in the 70's and 80's when the refs would stand over a guy in a coma and count to 10. Not like Etches would have not have made it to his feet but even if he did it would have been waved off so why the need for redundancy? Had he for some reason not waved it off then Etches may have been killed. There are a hell of a lot more fights waved off to early when fighters are on their feet to worry about what happened here. The ref looked at the situation, looked at the fighter and made the right call. I see no controversy here whatsoever. He was finished.
Remember these ko's from 2014?

Re: Howard Foster - At It Again - Another Poor Stoppage.
Etches was not a poor stoppage, that was brutal and blood was pouring out of him on the floor. That was scary knock out.
Re: Howard Foster - At It Again - Another Poor Stoppage.
He was well beaten perfect stoppage.

Re: Howard Foster - At It Again - Another Poor Stoppage.
I have absolutely no problem with that stoppage. The guy was out and even when the ref went to remove the mouth piece he wasn't getting up. The guy was done, good stoppage by the ref.
Re: Howard Foster - At It Again - Another Poor Stoppage.
When a fighter falls splayed out where he isn't moving or knocked stiff and/or the body is showing signs of involuntary muscle spasms It signals brain trauma and or neurological issue and the fighter doesn't have control over his body. The ref stops it because even he did get up he wouldn't be allowed to continue as someone said above. While im a boxing and MMA fan.. I'd rather see a stoppage like that than the ones in MMA where a guy is ko'd and still receives a double tap of hammer fists before the ref can insert himself in between the fighters.
Re: Howard Foster - At It Again - Another Poor Stoppage.
i enjoyed that fight, it was entertaining
disapointing it ended when it did
Re: Howard Foster - At It Again - Another Poor Stoppage.
Brits are pussies...both the fighters and the refs.
