Don't be surprised if Oscar De La Hoya's return to the ring next month is a one-fight deal. The head of Golden Boy Promotions is preparing to challenge Ricardo Mayorga's WBC light middleweight title May 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and has made it clear that his reason for shedding the business suit is the opportunity to retire from the ring for good as a champion.
De La Hoya (37-4, 29 knockouts) didn't do that Sept. 8, 2004, when he was stopped on a ninth-round KO by then-middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins. He sees Mayorga (28-5-1, 23 KOs) as the credible, if not perfect, 154-pound foe that will allow him to leave the ring with his head held high. Mayorga, yes. But Mayweather? De La Hoya, who will be coming off a 11/2-year layoff, doubts he'd face the No. 1 fighter at this point in his career.
"I think I'm too smart for that," De La Hoya said. "Mayweather is a great fighter. He's young and hungry and is coming up and wanting to make a statement. I don't want to be the steppingstone to a young gun like Mayweather, even though deep down inside I tell myself every day I can beat this guy."
I never thought I would see the day but it looks to me like the golden boy has a little doubt in himself. Which is funny to me cause he risked his health to fight hopkins but now hes worried about mayweather. But i think its more the fact he doesn't wanna get embarrassed at this point in his career not that he will get beat down. What do you guys think?

of course ODLH is going to keep telling himself he can beat him...but i would never call a fighter such as Oscar scared...he has nothing to gain except 20 million...whereas floyd could make 10-15 million and marketing value by beating Oscar...he's right he doesn't want to be the stepping stone for PBF...nothing wrong with that and he's already rich so he really doesn't need anything from PBF...

It's not doubt, it's being smart. Unlike 99% of fighters out there who think they can still be on top after their best days are behind them (Holyfield), Oscar is smart enough to know his limitations. Both Oscar and Floyd know this isn't the Oscar of 6 or 7 years ago.

I'm actually really glad to hear that.
I don't want to see Floyd making huge paydays for fighting past-their-prime names.
Fight Hatton, Baldomir, Cotto, call a press conference and say you want to fight Margarito on regular-good-old-fashion HBO for the fans. It might help smooth over some PR troubles, win some fans and make the next PPV bigger.
Heck, it's only good business to try and hide the fact that you're a greedy b@$+@rd
and at least let the fans think you're doing something for them.

Yes it is doubt. I understand what you are trying to say but if thats the case then why fight at all. Your right he isn't the oscar of old old but obviously he thinks he is good enough to still be a champ so he fights a risky opponent in mayorga so why not fight pbf? Cause he is scared. Mayorga is a risk and oscar could be a potential stepping for him but oscar will take that fight cause hes pretty sure he can win. All I'm saying is oscar can fool the general public but not real fans if he doesn't wanna be a stepping stone for another fighter he should retire right now. He is fighting mayorga cause he knows he can win, he is not fighting pbf cause he knows he will lose. Your right it is smart but it also shows fear and doubt.

as much as I don't like ODH, I can't honestly say that he ducked anyone.
a rematches I would like to see were against Quartey, but Quartey quit after Vargas beat him. Whitaker, but he ran into Tito. And Vargas. But ODH hates him, so I don't see ODH giving his enemy any opportunities. heck I wouldn't.

So its better to be the main event and fight a lesser opponent than to be the main event and fight a risky opponent. Well i guess in the end it really is just all about money for oscar.

Oscar promised Mayweather Sr. that he will never fight his son, so it's not about anything but a promise cuz DLH has a BIG chance of not only beating Floyd, but finishing him, but at the same time Oscar has problems with fighters with speed!

The only chance Oscar has of beating PBF is Floyd senior and his own old legacy. Which really ain't gonna do to good, because even if Floyd senior has the blueprint on how to beat his son, oscar's body won't be able to pull it off. He'll be beaten easily....

Odh certainly isn't scared of getting ko'd by Floyd. What's to fear. It's not that great of a fight and the only reason PBF wants it is for the huge payday. Everybody and their brother calls out Oscar for the money. PBF is a great boxer, but he's not a ko artist and I highly doubt there's fear involved in this decision.

I don't think Oscar has fear as in, "I might get really hurt during this fight" when talking about PBF. However, PBF's youth and skill could make Oscar look foolish and too old to be in the ring, which is an unfitting ending for someone like Oscar.
Mayorga is a good final opponent because he is credible, he is a champion, and he is very beatable for Oscar. Fighting PBF is for people who still have something to prove. You fight PBF because you want to be seen as the #1 P4P. Oscar knows he isn't that, and can't be that anymore.
Smart move. This is one of those things we'll crucify him for now, but will appreciate later. Just like Lewis leaving as the champ after beating Vitali on cuts. And we can say what we'd like about that, but cutting your opponent badly and over the eye is a way to end a fight. He won.

I dont think Oscar is scared of PBF. Definately not in the sense of being afraid of him, maybe just of his legacy going downhill if he gets schooled. Oscar is about to step in the ring with a very hard hitter in Mayorga who is going to be very tough to stop and he is hungry and a very tough chin, so it does indeed show Oscar has bottle.

Again, how is that fear or doubt if you're past your prime? Holyfield like I said is also past his prime, yet isn't smart enough to realize he can no longer beat the best, Oscar is. Oscar is a winner by nature, and he wants to win, he doesn't want to lose. He's fighting Mayorga at this stage in his career because he knows he can win. He knows he can't win at this stage against Mayweather. If this was 1999 Oscar not fighting Mayweather, it would be fear and doubt. 2006 Oscar, it's called not being as dumb as Holyfield.
