Boxing – Edwin L. Haislet
by Edwin L. Haislet
Info:
"The problem in boxing is not only which skills and techniques to learn, but when and how to learn them. Literature in the field at the present time seemingly ignores this problem. In any field where continued development rests upon the mastery of each element in its correct place, the learning sequence is all important. Great skill in boxing can result only through mastery of each technique in its proper place. There is a proper learning sequence in boxing which, if followed, allows a natural development to result. Ignore it and the development of skill is definitely limited.
The learning sequence herein presented is the result of experiment and experience. It is not perfect and no doubt further experience will bring constructive changes. It is, however, a sequence which seems to bring the quickest results and greatest skill with a minimum output of time and energy. Followed closely, it enable the student of boxing to continue as far as is desired, ability and determination being the only limiting factors."

Jack Dempsey, How I Got and Keep my Fighting Muscles
by Jack Dempsey
Info:
This is a neat short article that contains his ideas when it comes to getting fit staying in shape. This was taken from an old out of date physical culture magazine that I had found a few years back. I included a fun one page advertisement by Jimmy DeForest that’s Titled, “You might be the man to beat Dempsey!” Perhaps this reflects the spite that they had for each other at the time.

Boxing, A Guide Devoted to the Art of Self Defense
by John L. Sullivan
Info:
Spalding’s Boxing book with contributions by the one and only John L. Sullivan. The quality for this scan is a low resolution making it difficult to make out the text. Although the pictures are clearly visible, some parts are missing. Nonetheless this book is a rare find and should be interesting to look at.

Boxing for Beginners, with a Chapter showing its Relationship to Bayonet Fighting
by William J. Jacomb, with introduction by Joseph E. Raycroft.
Info:
Editor’s introduction: The book, Boxing for Beginners, consists of three parts. The first shows how to box, the second describes the relationship of boxing to bayonet fighting, and the third tells how to organize a boxing tournament. Although the first section is omitted and the third section is summarized because they are exactly what one would expect, Raycroft’s introduction to the third section is included as an introduction because the remarks give insight into the War Department’s reasoning in teaching boxing to soldiers.

Knuckles and Gloves (1922)
by Bohun Lynch
Info:
"In this little-known gem of boxing history published in 1923, author Bohun Lynch observes, "There was a delightful simplicity about the old boxing matches." The men fought to the finish; that is, when one failed to meet his opponent in the center of the ring. A round ended with a knockdown or a fall from wrestling, and only 30 seconds were allowed for rest and recovery. From the giants of bare-knuckle prize fighting through the pioneers of gloved combat, the men of these early years forged the renowned science of boxing in the cauldron of brutal, bloody, long-lasting bouts that would be inconceivable today.
Knuckles and Gloves covers this fascinating era in the history of boxing - the 18th through early 20th centuries. By describing in colorful detail a number of legendary bouts in chronological order, Lynch provides a valuable examination of the period when the sport transitioned from the use of bare fists to gloves, as well as snapshots of the great fighters of the day. Jack Dempsey, Jack Johnson, Robert Fitzsimmons and James Corbett are all familiar names to modern boxing fans, but here you will also read about Frank Slavin, Jem Belcher, Tom Spring, Tom Sayers and other early combatants of the ring. Lynch’s informed commentary about the development of boxing during this important period makes Knuckles and Gloves a thoroughly enjoyable read for any enthusiast of the sport."

"A TRANSCRIPT FROM REAL LIFE"
"Joe Fleming, a youth of twenty, earning his livelihood as a sailmaker and supporting his mother and sisters by his trade, augments his income by prize-fighting before so-called sporting clubs. On the eve of his marriage to Genevieve, an employe' in the Silversteins' candy shop, Joe is to fight his last bout before a club, having promised Genevieve to give up "the game," which, while it seems wrong to her, is to him a clean and manly as well as lucrative occupation. Re: Boxing History and Ring Science - E-Books
Chris, CC3 !!
This is awesome thank you for posting all the books! And to think it took me a month to find someone who had the Dempsey book...
-
Re: Boxing History and Ring Science - E-Books
I hope you enjoy it. It's funny because last night 5-6 guests registered just to download these books. ;D Anyways there's more on the way so be sure to check by soon.
I have the orginal Jack Dempsey scan if you don't like that one. The information is the same, some guy went through a lot of trouble transcribing and editing it. I posted that version up because of the smaller file size. Be sure to go through the other books. Georges Carpentier life would make a great movie with all the things that he went through, in the book the way he describes it makes it fun and exciting to read. The Roosevelt book by Mike Dovovan has a lot of interesting stories as well.

Re: Boxing History and Ring Science - E-Books
S*** man thanks alot. I've been searching for some good fight related reads. This seems like it should hold me off for a bit. much appreciated!
How would i go about DLing 'Boxing' from rapidshare?
-
Re: Boxing History and Ring Science - E-Books
It should keep you going for a while. :)
Anyways to download from rapidshare just click on on the link, it should bring you to a window where you have see a premium and free button.
Click on "free" that'll bring you to the page where you have to type in 4 letters, which then you just have to wait about 1 minutes and then you should be able to download it.
Even as a fighter it's good to have have something to spur you on, especially when your interest is lagging. Talking to a guy that knows his boxing, reading a good book, watching some good fights will give you that feeling where you just want to get up and go. It can be a good pick me up in a way, especially if your enthusiasm is fading and your workouts are beginning to feel stale.
It's always nice to just take a break once and a while and connect with some of the things that got you interested in boxing in the first place.

PUBLISHER'S NOTE:

I just checked it and it works fine. Did you right click on it and went to "Save as", it might be an issue with your browser, you can try reinstalling it, updating it, or by switching to a different browser such as Firefox or Opera.
The ebook works fine, if it doesn't work try downloading it again, and make that your Adobe Reader is up to date.
If that doesn't work I'll see about finding another mirror. If worst comes to worst I have the original scan of book, (not transcribed) and I'll see about uploading it in the near future.

After years of searching the internet for the silver bullet I found it! ;D
-
Re: Boxing History and Ring Science - Free eBooks
I have another shelf load of ebooks to unload here later, but for now I'd like to share a special treat with all of you.
From western martial arts enthusiast and passionate devotee in redistributing many rare treasures for all to see, Kirk Lawson's Storefront.
Excerpt from webpage:
"First, you'll find re-publication of antique Martial Arts manuals, focusing mainly on manuals important to the Western Martial Arts traditions, though not exclusively. These manuals are faithfully hand transcribed from original text with the original images scanned. Though I hold copyright on the text formatting and on the scanned images themselves, you are free to download PDF's of these historic texts, free of charge, at no cost and to re-distribute them provided you adhere to the legal terms stated in the foreword. Essentially this is that you agree not to attempt to profit my hard work. My intention here is to ensure that these works are available to the Western Martial Arts community at large."
It's an excellent service that he's providing with no monetary gains. He's transcribed and republished the Edwin Haislet manual from my botched raw scans, and I sent him the missing pages that were absent from the orginal compiled pdf.
I have also sent him another excellent scanned boxing manual by Philadelphia Jack O'Brien in that he has republished and is currently working on.
If you find any books that you really like from Kirk's Storefront, I recommend getting the shelf-friendly treeware version so that you make notes, as well as writing down the graffiti of your mind.
Rock on! :rocks:

There's no book on him that I'm aware of. Anyways, here's good quote by James Toney that tells a little about his learning:
"Bill Miller, he was a great old man, he sat me down and showed me tapes of old fighters," Toney recalled. "Ezzard Charles, Albert 'Chalky' Wright. Battling Siki. People like that. Jersey Joe Walcott. Archie Moore. He would say, 'This is how you learn. This is the correct way of fighting.' So I would sit there and watch tapes over and over again, and try those things in the gym, and I would get murdered. But I kept coming back, kept coming back, kept working, kept learning my trade. And then one day it was like each of those fighter's spirits entered my body and made me fight like that."
“I developed my style by watching tapes of old fighters. I watched Ezzard Charles and Jersey Joe Walcott constantly, and Tommy Hearns , Marvin Hagler . I learned a lot from watching these guys and studying. Some of it just comes naturally. “
Watching the videos alone isn't what developed his style. James Toney (at least early on) had to train his butt off, and even seeing the right right moves being done on those old tapes he still had to put it together on his own. No doubt that we would get hit trying overcome that learning curve, but like he said, one day it as like each of those fighter's spirits entered his body and made him fight like that.

Oscar De La Hoya- The Great Hispanic Heritage (2008')
Info:
When he was just a skinny, shy kid riding his skateboard through the streets of the East Los Angeles barrio, Oscar De La Hoya never thought he would one day be one of the world's premier boxers, setting records and winning championships. Neither did anyone else. However, when he was just six years old, he stepped into the ring with his father's encouragement and shocked everyone with his speed, power, and agility. He spent much of his childhood and teenage years honing his talent for defeating opponents in the boxing ring and accumulating wins by knockout. "Oscar De La Hoya" is a "made in America" story of a young boy with a dream and the perseverance and determination to make it a reality.

I haven't seen an ebook of it. You might want to try your public library. Here in Michigan they have a very well organized request system in that you can request books from other public and college libraries to be sent to the local library. He's definitely an interesting boxer. I just requested the book, Charles Burley, The Life and Hard Times of an Uncrowned Champion.

Reading Newspaper Articles via Google News
A friend of mine just showed me a nifty feature of Google, called Google News. I can look through many newspapers although mostly the NY Times, but it give me a wide range of information on fighters as well as their boxing matches.
You can see for yourself here: Google News Archive
-I set the date for 1870-1970, and you can change that around depending on what you're searching for. It's set for "free articles only", so if you want to find any articles that require payola, then you're welcome to change the settings as you see fit. Check it out, there are a lot of interesting articles out there.
As for another online newspaper resource, you might want to consider this: Chronicling America. It has newspapers from 1900-1910 some of which have excellent boxing coverage for the time.

Cinderella Man: James J. Braddock, Max Baer and the Greatest Upset in Boxing History - Audiobook
This was a very interesting look into the life of James Braddock, emphasizing his spectacular accomplishment of seizing the heavyweight crown from Max Baer. It's information is right on, captivating and much more in depth than the partial story displayed in the movie. It's a good read, and in this case a pleasure to listen to. Enjoy this audiobook. :)

Published together for the first time, this anthology of essays on boxing covers the sport in all its forms and at its many levels. Written in bestselling author Katherine Dunn’s characteristic vernacular, these pieces range from portraits of legendary fighters such as Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Marvin Hagler, and Mike Tyson to the unsung stories of trainers, amateurs, promoters, cutmen, and a pair of pugilistic priests. Spanning 30 years and including all who make up the vibrant boxing world, this compilation—from one of the most original voices in American sports literature—finely elevates the sport and communicates its beauty, passion, and character.

The Guarantor
by Jay Waitkus
It's been a while since I added any stories onto here. So here's a not too shabby short story about a boxing manager who promises his fighter that he'll win his next bout. What the manager does parallels his nonfiction counterparts in which to the extent that one may go in order to secure victory. It's only a few pages long, but it's worth the couple of minutes that it takes to read it.

Rocky Lives!
Boxing fans love the upset, seeing the underdog surprise the heavy favorite and take the fight to him, winning over the fans and—perhaps even more important—the judges. Sylvester Stallone mined that emotion through his long series of Rocky films.
Rocky is fiction, however. The men in Rocky Lives! are real. David E. Finger, a writer for top boxing website FightNews.com, presents chronologically seventy-five heavyweight boxing upsets of the 1990s. Some involve boxers still fighting today; others contain a cautionary tale of once-great boxers chasing one last payday. There are also the early-round disasters of wannabes and athletes who switched to boxing in midstream.
Perhaps the biggest upset of the decade occurred just forty-two days into it, as Buster Douglas drew inspiration from his recently deceased mother to deliver a monumental upset of Mike Tyson, the self-proclaimed—and, at the time, most agreed—"baddest man on the planet." HBO commentator Larry Merchant labeled it "the greatest upset in boxing history." Finger presents this fight and seventy-four others with amazing detail, looking back at the prefight hype and "common sense" perception, describing the fight preparation of each boxer, analyzing the fight itself, and discussing the aftermath. He explains why the upset was so upsetting, and describes the continued careers of both boxers.
From the Tyson-Douglas, Foreman-Moorer, and Lewis-McCall top-dollar fights to low-level curiosities like former New York Jet Mark Gastineau getting embarrassed or Eric "Butterbean" Esch taking to the ring, David Finger presents the best heavyweight upsets the 1990s have to offer. You’ll read about crooked promoters drugging opponents, a convicted felon hoping victory in the ring will win him leniency, and a forty-five-year-old preacher looking to exorcise a two-decade-old demon. Rocky Lives! brings all the knockouts and slugfests right into your home.

Re: Boxing History and Ring Science - Free eBooks
For fight fans here who love reading graphic novels, I have a treat for you.
In an interesting union between boxing and comics brings to us a beautifully rendered and compelling story about the legendary boxer, Jack Johnson, which is aptly called The Original Jack Johnson.
I'm a couple of issues into it, and so far it has been fun and engaging to read (as well as to look at). Anyone who's familiar with the Jack Johnson will find a lot of things that they won't agree with, but nonetheless it's an unique and interesting portrayal of the legend brought out on a different medium.
By the way, I should have mentioned this in the beginning, you can read this online for FREE! ;)
Take a look at it here: The Original Johnson Comic Issues at ComicMix
Enjoy.
