Man you have to feel bad for Ernest. He tripled up on the jab, had Ali perfectly set up for the right (even though the jabs missed) and came up with nothing on the right hand. Against any other heavy, Ernest Terrell might have scored a KO but not against the greatest heavy of all time ;)
I find, when I slip, I put my gloves down, just a little bit. It's so much easier to slip punches. BUT if I make a mistake, BANG!!! A clean shot to my chin. It's all over.
Ali had the reflexes of a CAT!!! :o
Its, not really reflexes I once worked with a guy who had the fastest reflexes tested in britain 6,000 of a second but it didnt stop him getting hit, because he was to tense Ithink Ali was fearless so he was always relaxed
thats what staying totally calm while fighting and understanding that you only need to move an inch or so to Slip a punch can do ...u really have to almost have somthin wrong w/ you to be that at home in a ring in a fight ...fighters like PBF & james toney and young RJJ have acheived this comfort i believe but its so odd w/ ali cause he was such a big man and still able to move just as fast as PBF

I don't think Ali was the greatest nor was the era of heavyweights dring which he fought. It was not long after the last of the truest pros had retired (Moore, Charles, etc...) and the skill level plunged. Ali was not a good defensive boxer because he was too often (1)too far away to counter (2)didn't have his feet right to counter and(3) he was clueless when it came to blockingpunches, for example the Frazier hook. Knew it was comingbecause Frazier only used one punch, kept eating it , never learned to block it.(all his kds came from hooks)

Ali helped evolve the modern style, a style that relied on having an excellent offence as well as defence.
To pick on the two fighters you named (Moore and Charles), both were without doubt cute and excellent defensive fighters, but for two different reasons neither were quite offensively good as they could of been.
Charles had demons to deal with after a ring death, so his offence was never quite the same again, which is very understandable. But Ali's era was no lesser than Charles' or Moore's; indeed perhaps boxing reached a pinnacle in the 70s (of great fighters), that bettered any other era, and that includes the 40s and 50s of the primes of Moore and Charles...

Fight within yourself meaning don't try to kill Ali...he wanted guys to swing for the fences to tire themselves out, the only one who was good at that was Frazier and his defense held him back.
You have to know what you can and can't do, stamina is an issue! Ali would go 15 rounds, he had a good chin and was hard to hit. So pace yourself and be realistic about how you could beat Ali.
You couldnt build a better fighter even in your mind than a prime Ali....If you could take the awsome speed and movement of a young Ali and mix it with the jaw of the Ali who fought after exile....Hell either version was just as he claimed GREAT!!
