WILLIAMS 'SHOCKED' BY LACK OF US TALENT
WILLIAMS 'SHOCKED' BY LACK OF US TALENT
By Mark Staniforth, PA Sport
http://www.sportinglife.com/boxing/n..._Williams.html
Commonwealth champion Danny Williams has rubbished America's era of horizontal heavyweights and predicted Europeans will dominate boxing's marquee division for years to come.
For decades Britain's big men have been derided across the Atlantic, but a recent shift in boxing's power base has left the US holding just one of the four major heavyweight titles.
And Williams - who defends his title in a rematch with Matt Skelton on the July 8 Millennium Stadium bill - has wasted no time pointing out the dearth of talent across the Atlantic.
Williams said: "I am shocked by the lack of talent in America and they are going to have a long drought. They have no-one to be respected and there is no-one coming through.
"Only one American, Hasim Rahman, is champion, and he has not even won a fight yet. The Europeans are on top and suddenly the Americans have to come over here to get big fights."
Rahman was handed the WBC title following Vitali Klitschko's retirement and subsequently fought a draw with James Toney. German-based east Europeans Wladimir Klitschko, Nikolai Valuev and Sergei Liakhovich hold the other three titles.
Williams, himself subjected to scorn prior to his stunning fourth-round knockout of Mike Tyson in July 2004, is still eager to prove he has what it takes to be world champion.
Promoter Frank Warren has vowed to deliver a world title fight for the winner of Williams' second clash with Skelton, with any of the three European champions presenting attractive options.
Williams added: "Wladimir Klitschko has proved himself the top man at the moment and Liakhovich can fight, but I think Valuev would be the easiest fight for me out there.
"I am still here and hopefully I will fulfil my dream. I am more convinced than ever that I will be a world heavyweight champion before I retire."

Re: WILLIAMS 'SHOCKED' BY LACK OF US TALENT
Danny Williams is a joke...He has one winover a big name and that name was shot long ago....The beating he took From Vitaly was embaressing
The whole heavyweight division is a joke and no one in it should brag champion or not...But I guess it makes them feel better...Since it has been how many years the Americans have ruled the division...Having second rate fighters rule a third rate division is nothing to brag about....A prime Tyson would have practically killed Danny Williams (no exageration).....Williams should worry about other things besides talking trash....He can't beat any of the champins European or not....

Re: WILLIAMS 'SHOCKED' BY LACK OF US TALENT
What's so shocking? Noone in the states cares about boxing anymore.
The sports that everyone plays here are:
American football-Of course we're the best at it, noone else even plays it.
Basketball-far and away the best, we don't even send our best to the Olympics anymore, but when we did the games were all 126-78 blowouts.
Baseball-we're probably the best at this, I don't know, I f#cking hate baseball.
...also if you check the Olympics there's a bunch of other crap we're apparently great at like snowboarding.
Anyway, my point is it's only natural that as interest wanes due to PPV, corruption,
etc. so shall our hold on boxing superiority. It's no coincidence that when boxing used to air on network TV in the States the HW belt was considered an American birthright.
...and Danny Williams IS a joke.
-
Re: WILLIAMS 'SHOCKED' BY LACK OF US TALENT
perhaps but it doesn't lessen the point that the yanks don't have anyone and the titles are in the hands of europeans.

Would someone like to post the breakdown of titles held by country?

Re: WILLIAMS 'SHOCKED' BY LACK OF US TALENT
In the US if you are a big man with athletic ability there are other sports that are available to play that makes more money for less effort. You have American football, basketball, and baseball. In the US you can not get much bigger than Basketball or American football, these are the two main sports right now. Boxing is no longer on the radar screen for the young kids anymore.
-
Re: WILLIAMS 'SHOCKED' BY LACK OF US TALENT
I'm not trying to "lessen the point", I'm offering an explanation, and do you disagree
that we once had a "hold on boxing superiority"? because we clearly did and don't anymore.
-
Re: WILLIAMS 'SHOCKED' BY LACK OF US TALENT
I doubt you do, I think you just took that out of context either due to genuine lack of comprehension or as a pathetic attempt to justify sadclicking me to yourself,
but I guess that wasn't you right?

This is one thing that has often bothered me...and I don't mean this as a personal slap Missy...so don't take it that way.
Why does everyone always get so up in the air over nationalities & boxing.
I just don't get it. Maybe I'm just an unpatriotic idiot or some shat...but honestly...if a man's a great fighter...I don't give two flying turds covered in corn where the hell he's from.
That being said...facts being a facts...Danny Williams is one to talk about a lack of talent coming from anywhere.
Anywho...I don't get the nationality thing...I never have...I suppose I never will.

Re: WILLIAMS 'SHOCKED' BY LACK OF US TALENT
tbh it really runs into people's subconciousness, perhaps alot of white people are glad to see white heavyweights controlling the scene....Its only natural that a white non-boxing fan is going to route for the white fighter if there was a match between a white boxer and black boxer.
It may be a prick on some americans ego's that there are european champions, but that isn't unexpected because for the past 100 years they were the superior to everyone else in regards to the sport.
-
Re: WILLIAMS 'SHOCKED' BY LACK OF US TALENT
It really does show a certain amount of unsophistication to throw every variable in the fight out the window just because that person is the same skin color or from your country. I thought it was hilarious when I seen this beautiful actress from Peurto Rico backing Trinidad in one of his fights, singing along to their national anthem, completely obsessed with the fact 'this guys from my country woohoo'. And her facial expression when Winky made him look like a fool, well like mastercard it was priceless. Some people really do need to be kicked in the face with a golf shoe.

good honest opinion from wacko. CC
Im Irish so of course I watch out for the likes of John Duddy and Bernard Dunne but outside Ireland, i dont really care where they are from but I do like Ricky Hatton and Joe C.
oh yeah we were talking about Mr Kipling Danny
who is he is to talk
he's fought no one cos Mike has been shot for years.
Anyone who got past the firstround with Mike tyson the last few years had a chnace of beating him cos his heart had gone and he didnt want to be in that ring.
Vitali handed danny his ass with a mr kipling behind his buns

How about I :sadclick: you for being a bit of a biased racist who runs things into the ground repeatedly?
Wouldn't that be more appropriate? That'd be the Royal treatment in my book. ;)

If you say that your'e not...then your'e not...who would no better than you?

Re: WILLIAMS 'SHOCKED' BY LACK OF US TALENT
It would only take someone like Lacy to have wan against Calzaghe to raise the profile of boxing, America is where money is generated for the sport of boxing, if they could produce an all American hero again then young influential kids would run to the sport.
I know not all Americans are like this but they are seen as cowboys, hollering wildly at anything faintly American, chanting "USA, USA, USA !!!"
That is how the rest of the world view America and bush doesnt help.
Im not ignorant enough to beleive all Americans are like this, same as British are seen as pale skinny cowards, when Hatton and Joe prove otherwise, although Audley is derided as much here if not more.
If a fighter like Tyson was to emerge, just an all action man not just a pretty boy like De La Hoya or Mayweather, neither of those Two would garner much attention from anything but a fan of boxing already. Mayweathers first fight as a ppv was v Gatti and he was a champ long before then. Oscar isnt known here but Tyson still gets headlines, everyone knows who he is.
They just need One genuinly talented guy whith a personality that is likable, someone who gets attention.
The last person I can think of (although he wasnt really likable) was hamed, he drew massive attention

Re: WILLIAMS 'SHOCKED' BY LACK OF US TALENT
I don't totally disagree, US heavyweights are down right now, but Danny should have let somebody else say it since he's such a garbage fighter.

I do and I don't.
If I was from the US or Europe, I might not because you guys pump out good fighters all the time. I know being up here in Canada, where we don't have so many, if one were to get to the top I would love that and favour him over the others because he is Canadian.
But nationality being used to talk about the sport as a whole just sucks I think. Boxing is such a solo, personal sport... why bring something as big as the country into it?

Re: WILLIAMS 'SHOCKED' BY LACK OF US TALENT
There's nothing wrong with a bit of national pride, or regional or city or community pride.
It's a natural human facility, feeling pride more strongly when the point is closer to home. The only reason we focus on the national level here is because boxing is international. Look at American football, there's as much regional pride there - just aren't governments with political ambitions and bombs to make the regional affiliation carry so much dangerous baggage.
We all cheer for what's closest to us by nature. We learn to cheer for what's objectively best and not in our regional interest by becoming educated.
The latter is more altruistic and accurate and Wacko-like and therefore certainly to be emulated.
The former has a less worthy but more emotional satisfaction experience.
Both got their place, nothing wrong with either, really.
And: American's do not hold the market on national/regional pride. In this, we're all alike. That being the case, our regional affiliations and pride, which set us apart in one way, also make us very much the same in a much more important way. We humans by nature, we is.

Nice....CC and true too. I don't really care about where a person is from hence if a guy is from Britain and another from the US,I am not automatically going to cheer for the guy that is British just because I am from there too.

Great point but I think in boxing national/religious pride has been more negative than positive. Joe Louis/Max Schmelling for example. Or how many times has a muslim watched a Muhammed Ali fight and was completely entertained just because of the one fact, he's muslim. Yeah it's their right but it gets in the way of them truely understanding whats going on inside the ring, thus they'll never apreciate it like we on this forum do - because of that bias. And theres also one thing that is universal about all humans, we fuck everything up lol, why have pride when we're natural born screwups. I don't see the point in it, but maybe the people who disagree are missing something that me and many others on this forum get. Or maybe we're missing something ???

I can't believe he said that.

Re: WILLIAMS 'SHOCKED' BY LACK OF US TALENT
I'm 'shocked' that anybody thinks Danny Williams opinion counts for anything. It doesn't. He sucks. The entire heavyweight division is a disgrace. Fat, out of shape jarheads with minimal boxing ability. That goes for the Euro robots to. (by the way, Valuev isn't a champ. He was defeated by Larry Donald and John Ruiz. They're from America and they also suck.)
Rahman is mediocre at best. And Wlad better relish his time in boxing, because he's gonna get hammered home by some other mediocre heavyweight with a solid punch.
-
Re: WILLIAMS 'SHOCKED' BY LACK OF US TALENT
What Danny said was true.
All those who point out that Vitali beat him, remember this; Vitali isn't an American fighter ;D
Lamon Brewster (who was rather #1 HW a while ago) STRUGGLED against Kali Meehan 18 months ago. The SAME Kali Meehan that Danny Williams knocked out in 32 seconds
Williams may not be the most talented guy out there but he has a massive puncher, desire, willpower and heart and that will easily get him a belt. I can see him beating the highly immobile Valuev, perhaps Rahman (that will never happen though) and he has a good shot at Sergie Lykovich too (sp?).
Yes, Danny isn't the most talented guy out there but there is no denying that he has what it takes to beat any one of the three belt holders out there. Only Wladamir would give him problems, but imagine....one Williams bomb against Wladamir's chin and it's = Good night sweetheart.

Not garbage, just average :)
-
Re: WILLIAMS 'SHOCKED' BY LACK OF US TALENT
He's better than average, he keeps getting the results so that places him pretty high on my list. Looking at the Top 20, Danny could easily beat most of them. Only Toney and Wladamir I would pick against Danny.
He used to be pretty good though, he could put together combo's like a little featherweight a few years ago, had good speed, movement, jab and sledgehammer power in both hands.
-
Re: WILLIAMS 'SHOCKED' BY LACK OF US TALENT
I'm not gonna bother mixing words about Williams. He's garbage. The only way that he even looks halfway decent is when compared to other turds in the division.
He beat Harrison, who obviously sucks. He beat Skelton, who as far as I can tell has beat nobody. But who has he lost to: Julius Francis, Michael Sprott, Sinan Samil Sam... (Michael Sprott?)
I could care less if American's dominate the heavies (An I'm from America). At this point, arguing about who is dominating the heavies is like asking which turd smells better. So if Williams does have a valid claim to being a true heavyweight contender, then the state of the heavies is worse off than I thought.

When Danny Williams is commenting on the shape the disvision is in. You know the division really is in sad shape
