Calzaghe talks! Tarver, Kessler, Wright, Taylor, & more...it makes sense...
Calzaghe targets Tarver!
May 3, 2006
Although Joe Calzaghe's opponent for his upcoming title defense on July 8 has yet to be announced, the "Pride of Wales" wastes no time in declaring just who he wants to face in the ring later this year. "Antonio Tarver is my main objective," said the WBO and IBF Super Middleweight Champion. "I'd also love to fight the winner of Winky Wright and Jermain Taylor. Those would be two massive opportunities out there for me, but obviously, they're all fighting in June so we're looking at the autumn as a possibility."
Riding the peak of his powers at age 33, Calzaghe has no concerns about going up in weight to face hard punching light heavyweights like Tarver, who must first get past Bernard Hopkins next month. "Tarver got himself on the pound for pound list when he's lost three fights," exclaimed the undefeated Welshman. "He hasn't fought any great fighters and as far as I'm concerned, he's overrated. He's beaten an old man in Roy Jones, who Tarver wouldn't have touched five years ago, struggled against another old man, Glen Johnson, in two fights and as far as I'm concerned, I'll knock him out. I don't really rate Tarver and I think that he's a boring fighter to watch."
With the ability to continue as a super middle or campaign at light heavyweight, Calzaghe finds himself in a unique and potentially lucrative position. "When Markus Beyer first won the WBC title from Richie Woodhall in 1999, we tried to make a fight with him and it was impossible," recalled the sharp southpaw. "It may be easier to make now, Beyer's getting older and probably looking for a big payday, but there's bigger fish out there.
"Mikkel Kessler is a good fighter, he's undefeated and probably a better fighter than Beyer but then again, does Kessler mean that much outside of Denmark? These are the things that have to be looked at. Obviously, come November, if the fights can't be made with Tarver or one of the top middleweights, then maybe we'll go that route."
Such choices are the spoils of war for Calzaghe, currently the longest reigning world champion at over eight years, but the party will come crashing down if he doesn't prove victorious at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on July 8. "To be honest, I could stay at super middle the rest of my career if I wanted to but as I always said, I'd love to be a two weight world champion," he said. "I'm finally getting real recognition and the fight in Cardiff this July is going to be a great occasion."

Agreed. I really REALLY wanted him to fight Kessler...but one of em would have to lose & it'd be Kess...& I dont want that...so better for Joe to move up & start dominating 175 (because he could) & let Kess start ruling 168 (because with Calzaghe there...he could) for his run.

Re: Calzaghe talks! Tarver, Kessler, Wright, Taylor, & more...it makes sense...
Noone should underestimated the big Dane. He has the skills of the welshman and is stronger than Lacy. It could be a cracker going both ways. I would not bet against Kessler.
-
Re: Calzaghe talks! Tarver, Kessler, Wright, Taylor, & more...it makes sense...
although fighting tarver would bring him some recognition I don't think it would be a signficant payday but I would like him to shut Tarver's bubble gum lips.

I won't be against Kessler...unless he's standing across from Calzaghe.

I think that Calzaghe Tarver would make both HBO, Calzaghe, & Tarver fwockin boatloads of cash!!!

Re: Calzaghe talks! Tarver, Kessler, Wright, Taylor, & more...it makes sense...
Tarver won't go to Wales or anywhere Overseas to fight him, I saw him say that in an interview.. Has Calzaghe said he'd fight Tarver in the states?

Why whats so bad about Calzaghe that makes you want him to lose?
-
Re: Calzaghe talks! Tarver, Kessler, Wright, Taylor, & more...it makes sense...
I would love to see Calzaghe vs. Wright... I dunno why, but I think their styles would work well against eachother... I think Joe would have a hard time with Wright's jab, and Wright would have a hard time with Joe's combinations.
-
Re: Calzaghe talks! Tarver, Kessler, Wright, Taylor, & more...it makes sense...
mmmm....i would rather see calzaghe clean up the division and then move up, but if he's gonna move up a little prematurely then i suppose seeing him beat tarver will do....
thats if tarver can actually finish off mr b hop that is....im not so sure about that, time will tell...
-
Re: Calzaghe talks! Tarver, Kessler, Wright, Taylor, & more...it makes sense...
Calzaghe wouldn't beat Tarver. Even if Hopkins beats Tarver, Calzaghe wouldn't beat Tarver

calzaghe has too much for tarver....tarver is getting old and recently had problems with old man glenn johnson and has only really beat a clearly past his sell by date jones jr....
tarver cant keep up a pace for 12 rounds, calzaghe would bewilder him.....jones jr was gun shy calzaghe isnt gun shy and he doesnt mind taking a punch....
tarver would be overwhelmed....
i think an old hopkins has a very good chance also....i really dont rate tarver all that highly...
-
Re: Calzaghe talks! Tarver, Kessler, Wright, Taylor, & more...it makes sense...
I think personally that Tarver might match up against Calzaghe... I can easily see his style giving Calzaghe big troubles, but vice virsa I see Calzaghe KO'ing Tarver.

whatever JOE C decides is fine with me...He is "THE MAN" ...Tarver could be in trouble..losing all the weight he gained in R6 could really mess him up.....Tarver got lucky with RJJ...RJJ should have fought him at cruiserweight....GO "ITALIAN DRAGON!!!"

Re: Calzaghe talks! Tarver, Kessler, Wright, Taylor, & more...it makes sense...
kessler isn't stronger than lacy and that would be another easy fight for joe that wouldnt make hm the dollar in the states. i would love to see him fight tarver. all that bollocks tarver said about his homeboy really pissed me off. joe would plough through him.

Did you watch how Calzaghe bullied Lacy around in their fight? Lacy was "down" a handfull of times due to his pure strenght and bad balance. Calzaghe would never be able to bully Kessler around. Lacy had the strenght of a welterweight that night.

Lacy was just a handpicked and untested opponent for Calzaghe, only thing Calzaghe did was he beat a slow and onedimensional Lacy

Handpicked opponent, hahahahaha you make me laugh everytime you post!!!
Yes you usually handpick opponents who are the favourites to win the fight!!!
Listen mate stop your hating on Lacy, he was a game up and coming fighter who is respected and was most peoples pick to win the fight, your boy Kessler has nothing to offer Joe, who knows him for starters?? Secondly who has he beat?? Dont start coming up with thr Rings number 1 and number 2 rubbish you usually rant about, Kessler can have his shot when he makes some noise like Lacy who was making a hell of alot of noise prior to the Calzaghe fight.
Also before you and your gang say Calzaghe is ducking him, why would he call out Winky Taylor and Tarver??? Tarver is a much bigger man than Kessler also all these guys have been in with the best something Kessler has never done.
-
Re: Calzaghe talks! Tarver, Kessler, Wright, Taylor, & more...it makes sense...
Pter Manfreado jr is the best match for joe at the moment as hes a big name in the us despite not being in championship class.Beating manfreado would make calzaghe a biger name in the us giving him a better chance of getting Tarver to wales for their fight. I think Tarver will be shocked into his shell by the third round and Calzaghe wil win by unam dec.Cant see winky wright stepping up to fight Calzaghe and if Tarver wont fight winky, he definatly wont fight Calzaghe.
-
Re: Calzaghe talks! Tarver, Kessler, Wright, Taylor, & more...it makes sense...
this is a weird post...well i mean the replies are..because everyone seems to agree with the fact that rjj was over the hill when he fought tarver...then use that same fight as a tool to try to dimish roy or make cases for fighters in the past that would have beaten roy....when we all know that had roy retired after beating ruiz or even after the first fight with tarver..he'd be #2 p4p all time....
-
Re: Calzaghe talks! Tarver, Kessler, Wright, Taylor, & more...it makes sense...
Tarver made him shot imo
Roy was the same Roy in their rematch,....infact he looked better than in their first fight, Tarver just got him with a blind punch. That same Jones would of beaten Ruiz again because he outclassed Tarver in the first round.
However Roy was totally shot in their 3rd encounter

Lacy was favourites to win the fight against Calzaghe you make me laugh, only people who has Lacy to win was US media and US boxing-fans not realistic boxing-fans who was able to see Lacy just was a overrated and overprotect slow Turtle on steroids

Re: Calzaghe talks! Tarver, Kessler, Wright, Taylor, & more...it makes sense...
Kessler is overrated ;) Bunch of names nowhere near their primes anymore... not a single fight out of Denmark...sound familiar? ;)

Manny Siaca (WBA Champ)
Anthony Mundine ( former WBA Champ)

Siaca lost to Byron Mitchell twice and was nothing special, was handed a gift against Mundine which is how he got the title that Kessler took from him and then his first title defense is against the guy his last opponent just beat ;)

When did I mention Lacy? I told everyone to watch Lacy's fight with Donnel Wiggins and Rubin Williams before saying Lacy would beat Joe.

Joe knows how to talk a lot of crap... but he just doesn't back it. Tarver is a great boxer and a great champion. Why? Because he does something you don't mister Calzaghie... Fight nothing but the best. He told the ABC's to stick it where to sun don't shine (as did Glenn Johnson) and that's why it doesn't matter if he holds a single belt, everyone knows he's the champ
Untill you BEAT Kessler , I don't think you can talk that much crap about him. He is one of the best SMW in the world
Bottom line... We all know Joe isn't going to fight anyone or step foot on American or Denmark soil. He's going to ride his victory over Lacy untill the day he retires. Yes, good job Joe. Great fight. Want to be a pound for pound champ? You're going to have to step up a few more times. Hint... Peter Manfredo Jr and Allen Green isn't a step up

Re: Calzaghe talks! Tarver, Kessler, Wright, Taylor, & more...it makes sense...
if it isnt lacy, its calzaghe! ::**
if kessler is so good, then why doesnt he take a huge pay cut and go over to wales and just beat calzaghe?? if he's so good he'll win, joe will get a payday and kessler can then go on and make some good money off of beating calzaghe......why doesnt he just do that....
calzaghe needs a fight....sounds simple really....i dont think kessler wants any of that...
-
Re: Calzaghe talks! Tarver, Kessler, Wright, Taylor, & more...it makes sense...
Tarver was dropped and went life and death with an old Reggie Johnson and was dropped and beaten up by Eric Harding in their first fight. He also appears to dislike a fast-paced fight. I think Calzaghe handles him and maybe even stops him.
Mundine Siaca wasn't a gift. Mundine is much more talented than Siaca but he was dropped early and fought with no urgency for the rest of the fight. The fight wasn't uncompetitive and I thought it possible that Mundine would get a home town decision.

to be fair we've heard nothing about that since....nothing from the kessler camp in response to that i also presume...
we've no idea what was discussed....im sure kessler would have wanted his slice of the cake too...
not quite the strategy i suggested....

I make you laugh?? You really need to get your fights right Kessler nuthugger dont you before i make you laugh, firstly the bookmakers all over the world had Lacy as the favourite not the US Media or US boxing fan, the bookmakers!!!
Do you know how the bookmmakers come about there prices??? Through the publics $$$$$$$, so generally not just people from the US had there money down for Lacy hence he was the odds on favourite to win the fight, so please come back when you actully talk some sense, or when you were referring to people who new something about boxing did you mean you and your Danish natives whos boxing knowlegde goes about as far as the Danish border!!
