Antonio Margarito Answers Your Questions!
By Scoop Malinowski
...And you don't want to miss it!
WBO Welterweight king Antonio Margarito took time to answer Boxinginsider.com readers' questions.
Read on to learn Antonio's new nickname for Floyd, who got bloodied in the De La Hoya-Margarito sparring sessions, and much much more!
Boxinginsider.com would like to say Special thanks to manager Sergio Diaz and WBO Champ Antonio Margarito for their participation.
Q Thanks for your time Antonio,
What do you feel is your greatest asset to winning a fight with Mayweather? Is it just your physical size and strength, or your punching power or what?
I personally think that your solid chin and never-quit offense will be what wears him down and stops him late. He doesn't have anywhere near the power to hurt you, and he'd probably break his pretty little hands trying.
Bye the way, he is definitely ducking you. Like Scoop wrote, He's now the 8 million dollar chicken.
Thanks again champ,
Kevin from PA
Antonio Margarito Says:
Kevin, thank you for writing. Kevin, I have to say that all of the above are my biggest assets. Gayweather, excuse me, Mayweather started his career as a Junior Lightweight and is now fighting as a Welterweight. I've been a Welterweight from the beginning of my career. Mayweather has been campaigning at the higher weights for the money, and if you notice whose he fought, he's fighting B class hand picked opponents. There is no question about it, he should be beating those guys. Mayweather is ducking me because he knows I'm the bigger and stronger of the two. I've been told that he won't fight me because of the trouble he had with Castillo. That is not true, I really believe he would fight me if he felt I was another Castillo. He won't fight me because he knows I don't fight like Castillo. I will knock that "Pretty Girl" out!
Q Antonio,
It is disapointing to see Mayweather run from you. I knew for a fact that
this was gonna happen, He is not a true champion. A true champion takes on all comers. If d.l.h looses to mayorga on the 6th. More than likely you will see the same thing that you saw with judah and baldomir. he will still get his shot at mayweather. DISAPOINTING to all true boxing fans. boxing fans want to see the fights that will bring higher rating to the boxing industry. not fights that boxers pick and choose. But sad to say that will never happen..All for the mighty green dollar --Martin Lopez
Antonio Margarito Says:
You are correct. I'm in a situation that is definitely hurting my career and keeping the fans from watching great fights. I remember when I would ask my promoter why it was they weren't involving me in big fights. His answer was "the risk was higher than the reward". This was a frustrating answer. But, I'm happy to say that is not the problem anymore, but I am sad to say the problem are the promoters. Golden Boy Promotions keeps signing the top fighters in my weight divisions and Top Rank does not want to work Golden Boy and vice versa.
Q I wanted to break the mold of the monotonous Floyd questions and ask, What do you think of the other big names now at 147llbs class?
(Gatti,Hatton) and, How do you think you would match up with these guys? Nathan Charles
Antonio Margarito Says:
Mayweather-I'll knock him out Arturo Gatti-I'll Retire him
Ricky Hatton -I'll knock him out Oscar De La Hoya- I'll Retire him
Shane Mosley-I'll knock him out
Q why would Floyd be scared to fight you when he is not scared to fight winky wright or oscar de la hoya? Rashaun Allen
Antonio Margarito Says:
First of all, who is afraid of De La Hoya? At this time of Oscar's career, he only represents dollars. Beating Oscar does nothing for your career anymore. He's past his prime, takes very long layoffs, I really don't believe his heart is all there. Oscar stopped being a fighter when he became a promoter. I don't want to take anything away from Oscar, he's a very smart business man who has done a lot and continues do good things for boxing, but when Oscar looses his next fight, everyone will say that he should have hung his gloves earlier. As for Winky Wright? I've always said I'll fight Mike Tyson, does it mean I'll be fighting him? Floyd does not want any part of me. Not only did he decide to buy out his contract to set a potential fight with Oscar, he paid to not fight me. He did not want to continue hearing my name from Bob Arum.
Q Is it true you actually sparred with Oscar De La Hoya? What do you remember about those sparring sessions? How did you do? What fighter would give you the most trouble? --K Dogg
Antonio Margarito Says:
I did spar with Oscar, but I used him as my sparring partner. Oscar and his trainer wanted me to be their dummy. They would tell me to let him hit me, not to throw any punches. Then I would be told to throw at him, but not hard while he was throwing hard. I'm a person with a short temper, all this was only making me furious, so naturally, I would let go of my punches with power. On two different occasions I made him bleed. Once from the nose and the other time from the ear. Unfortunately, both times they sent me back down.
I have to say Daniel Santos will always give me the most difficulty. He's style is not an easy one to adjust to.
Q Have you never met Floyd in person? Did you sense he was intimidated by your size?
Antonio Margarito Says:
I've never met Floyd.
Q Do you think Floyd Mayweather is a great fighter at welterweight?
Antonio Margarito Says:
I will not consider Floyd a great fighter at welterweight until he faces me, but he still would have to beat me.
Q What is your prediction on Oscar de la hoya vs. Ricardo Mayorga? Also, by the way Oscar disses you, do you think he's scared of you to, like Floyd?
Antonio Margarito Says:
Oscar by knock out. He's not scared just smart. He does not want to end his career with a loss.
Q Who are your favorite boxers to watch and study?
Antonio Margarito Says:
Julio Cesar Chavez.
Q Who is the hardest puncher you ever fought? Who was the toughest opponent in terms of heart and durability?
Antonio Margarito Says:
I have to say Daniel Santos. This guy carries a strong punch.
Q Does it make sense to you that Floyd is waiting to fight Oscar de la hoya where he can earn about double what he will make to fight you? Or do you think he's using the option to fight Oscar as a way to avoid you?
Antonio Margarito Says:
In a business sense, it does. Only if it is true about making $20 mill. If he's not making $20 mill for the fight, then we can all continue to agree that he's using the option to fight Oscar as a way to avoid fighting me.

Re: Q & A with Antonio Margarito (he has a new nickname for floyd)
Judah was not even worth a mention and no doubt,he out of all of them would get KOED the quickest.....lol. Great interview,I told you guys he busted up Oscar in sparring!!! I posted that AGES ago and no-one believed me! Man,does Tony sound pissed and rightfully so..he also got the De La Hoya prediction right, which very few did! I can guarantee that he was surprised that Oscar mentioned him though! He's right,he does not fight like Castilo because he hits harder comes at you with more and after/if it goes ahead(fight with Oscar)....PBF will have NO excuse not to fight Tony. Gayweather....me likes that! He's honest too,he admits that the PBF Oscar fight makes business sense but let us not forget people.....$20mill was just a rumour from an article,no-one knows how much he will get until the fight is properly drawn up. If they are to fight,I want it to happen ASAP so Floyd can win then fight Margarito. Then we will find out if he is truly ducking Tony or not.

you couldnt be more wrong, margarito recognizes that judah is the only one who hits hard enough to KO him AND is too fast for him ;)
-
Re: Q & A with Antonio Margarito (he has a new nickname for floyd)
I want Margarito to make AS LOUD A NOIsE AS IS HUMANLY POSSIBLE!! His profile must have gone up ALOT on the last few months and what with Oscar mentioning his name, more people must be taking notice of him....Mayweather sooner or later your ass in going to be in the ring with the Mexican power punching tornado so stop procrastinating/delaying the inevitable!
-
Re: Q & A with Antonio Margarito (he has a new nickname for floyd)
Judah was not fast enough to beat Baldomir..... ;D and he was supposedly waaaaaaaaay too fast for Kostya..... Oh and another note,I totally agree,Santos style was just the worst for Tony to fight,I counted at least 7 headbutts in their fight!

margarito makes a number of astute observations there. he's right, floyd is stepping into unchartered territories without really taking on the absolute best in the divisions. floyd is going to have difficulty against big fighters with their extra power. floyd has been coasting a long time. after all didnt he fight zab after zab lost to what was nothing more than a very solid journeyman in baldomir....
a strong hungry fighter in his prime and craving big fights is a very dangerous proposition for mayweather.....especially a PBF who is still pretty green to the division....
lets see if oscar even goes ahead with a mayweather fight first...
and will give you a click back when karma allows ;)

Re: Q & A with Antonio Margarito (he has a new nickname for floyd)
Fwock Margarito.
The nickname he shouldv'e thrown out for Floyd was : "Christ almighty...I can't make any money fightin this buncha nobodies...I hope Floyd will fight me...I need the cash & I don't mind makin a name for myself by takin a Mayweather ass whoopin!"
It's a big nick name...but if you say it real fast...it fits Margarito to a tee.

if judah is damaged goods for an illegitimate TKO loss to tszyu, a robbery in vegas, a decision loss he should have been given against baldozar, and a loss in a fight where his opponents trainer was aloowed to choke him for over a minute between rounds...
then margarito is a fuckn joke ;)

Where's the joke...did Judah beat Baldomir?? Where was the speed and power? Mayweather was just figuring him out for a few rounds, that is all and it would also explain his inactivity in those rounds and how about Kostya?? When Margarito connects with Judah and he does another dance,Tony won't let him off the hook...it'll be lights out.

You and I both know that Margarito would not be getting that much money,he is just confident he can beat Floyd and get the exposure. And if you really want to apply that then Floyd can have the same nickname in relation to Oscar.
"Christ almighty...I can't make enough money fightin this buncha b minus graders(Judah),old crocks(Michell) and no bodies(Brusseles) that I am expected to beat...I hope Oscar will fight me...I need the cash & I don't mind makin a name for myself by takin out an old man and avoiding dangerous guys I know that can beat me like Margarito."

Re: Q & A with Antonio Margarito (he has a new nickname for floyd)
how does 'PBF was figuring him out' nullify the fact that judah is infact faster?

Re: Q & A with Antonio Margarito (he has a new nickname for floyd)
Margarito says "Beating Oscar does nothing for your career anymore. He's past his prime". Yet I bet you his chumpass would sign to fight him in a heart beat. What a joke this clown is.

Agreed...& I can promise you...no matter what he says...he's got a different opinion after this weekend.
Like I said...it's hard to judge Oscar by just one night...especially against Mayorga...but he did impress & he dead technically destroy Mayorga in a pretty efficient way.

I agree that what he said about Oscar was stupid.
This guy has fought no one like Oscar before and it would be like winning the lotto for him as far as pay days go.

we must remember he said this before the mayorga fight....many of us were questioning how much oscar really had left in him. a while back i said myself i would judge him off his performance against mayorga...im sure margarito has done likewise...
oscar was better than most of us thought he would be...

i wasnt disagreeing with that aspect...i was just saying we shouldnt critisise him for presuming oscar might have been way beyond his prime....its an assumption many had made...
im sure margarito would face him if offered the chance...it would be an opportunity to finally get more recognition beyond the boxing fraternity...

i dont understand why he is stupid for saying something many of us had suspected....we all make errors of judgement. oscar looked good against mayorga. very true. but at the end of the day, how much did mayorga himself have left in the tank. at the age of 33, relative inactivity and a beating off trinidad, it seems with hindsight some of us thought mayorga had a little more in him than he did. its all relative and there are always variables that raise uncertainty. only the result can answer any questions.
oscar fought a good fight, but lets not get overboard on all this. mayorga turned out to be very limited. margarito is welcome to his opinion as much as anybody...

Because if they ever fought and Margarito for some miracle was to win. The win would be diminish by his own words.

oscar was better than most people expected, better than margarito expected as well, i presume...

Re: Q & A with Antonio Margarito (he has a new nickname for floyd)
I use to really like margarito but right now he is talkin out his a$%. IMO right now margarito is like the best of the nobodies. I say this because the truth is he has fought no one. His entire record is loaded with B-,C and even D level fighters. The best fighter he has fought is Daniel Santos. DANIEL SANTOS and he lost twice. What gives margarito fans so much confidence? It can't be what hes done in the past. Oh it must be the fact that PBF is small. Which brings up another point, I've never seen a natural junior middle weight be so hungry to fight a natural lightweight. Hes trying to call out pbfs manhood by calling him gayweather but hes thirsty to fight a guy who his is 2-3 weightclasses bigger than. What does that say about him? What he needs to do is fight someone worth mentioning, beat them and then he can start callin out the best. All that aside I think hes too slow for pbf and would lose by UD if they fought. The only thing that gives any welter a chance against pbf is there size. But being big and strong don't mean anything if you can't put it on the target.
-
Re: Q & A with Antonio Margarito (he has a new nickname for floyd)
Beating ODH up in sparring is TOTALLY different than a real fight....Margarito is gonna get fucked up by someone soon...he's got something wrong with his style, it's long in a bad way...I mean he doesn't get his arms back on defense quick at all.
Hatton would eat him alive (no joke intended)
Gatti he may beat
Oscar would pick him apart
Floyd would make him look silly
Zab would get beat by him
Mayorga maybe beats him
Mosley DEFINANTLY beats him
-
Re: Q & A with Antonio Margarito (he has a new nickname for floyd)
Hey.. at least Margarito predicted Oscar by KO, he got that right where most people didn't. I though Oscar would have to box alot more and get the decision. Still I dunno where he gets off talking bad about Oscar when the guy has never in his life fought anyone of the calibre of any OPPONENT Oscar has fought in the last... 10 years??? And he still lost to Santos, who isn't even very good and doesn't punch that hard.. Just shows the reality that he has fought nobody.. He thinks Santos style was very hard to adjust too, and he can really punch hard.. DLH would destroy him, and how the hell would he figure out Mayweather? His punches are about as wide as Mayorgas.

He's beaten whoever has been put in front of him and yeah,Santos is not great but firstly that fight should have been scored for Tony and second styles make fights and their styles just clashed too much.7 headbutts anyone? Also, that's really lame thinking because as soon as Floyd made his way to 147 he was a legitimate target. Oh so what does it say about Hopkins beating Oscar? Where did Oscar start off? Also, styles makes fights,I reiterate because who would have thought out of all Floyd's opponents,Castillo would have caused him problems?

You might be right. I still think he was better off keeping his mouth closed
He was talking before the fight took place, like Miles said and MANY people made that mistake off writing off Oscar...Margarito included but let's not forget he predicted Oscar to win

Hatton would eat him alive (no joke intended)
Gatti he may beat
Oscar would pick him apart
Floyd would make him look silly
Zab would get beat by him
Mayorga maybe beats him
Mosley DEFINANTLY beats him
Hatton would not eat him alive at all....it would be a close fight UNLESS Hatton got ripped to shreds by Margarito's punches.
There is no may,Gatti would be right there in front of Tony and would get crushed.
Floyd may make him look silly....I doubt it though.....
dam right on the Zab
I think he beats Mayorga, too much pressure
if Mosley DEFINITELY beats him,why did he state OPENLY and there were numerous links posted that he sais he was not ready for Tony and which is why he changed his mind and stayed at 154...to fight Vargas a second time because Tony was the only available opponent. Not saying Margarito would win but you're more confident than Mosley ::** ::** ::**
P4PKING,his punches arent as wide as Myorgas,he's stronger, throws more and he can shorten and they come from weird angles. He also has a decent jab and can work the body.....
Anyone else........ O0

good to see he knows better then to say he could beat judah, i support this man :thumb:
he's a loyal fan alright but cmon ur man is damaged goods
if judah is damaged goods for an illegitimate TKO loss to tszyu, a robbery in vegas, a decision loss he should have been given against baldozar, and a loss in a fight where his opponents trainer was aloowed to choke him for over a minute between rounds...
then margarito is a fuckn joke ;)
Apparently you have been around here much longer then I have but what are you, just a troll trying to stir up sh*t all the time and get people to argue with you about one the dumbest fighters around (JUDAH). All those fights you just listed were legit losses for your super boy, you call Margarito a f**king joke but that joke would be all over Judah and it would end quickly.

Re: Q & A with Antonio Margarito (he has a new nickname for floyd)
Margarito ain't all that, I mean he's fooling himself at 147 because you damn well know he's a 154 pounder but he couldn't take Daniel Santos' power so he had to move down!
Which means guys like Oscar, Mayorga, Mosley, and Vargas could beat him! Because they have tasted harder punches and survived.
Floyd is too quick for those LOOOOOONG punches he throws and I swear they just get longer and longer.
Hatton would get on the inside nullify the height advantage and work the body end of story!
