Prime for Prime there isn't anyone really close to RJ within 20-30 years. I would say Ezzard Charles or Archie Moore would have given him a run but Roy was just damned good.
He would have killed Ezzard or Archie...
At his prime RJJ would have killed Tarver. He would had his reflexes and the power plus if you watched the rubber match, RJJ did hurt Tarver a couple of times but was scared to get cough so he didnt persued him. But at his prime he felt as did many of us that he was unbeatable and therefore he would Ko Tarver.
Roy beat Tarver after losing 30 lbs in a month or two. And if he wasn't affected by the weight-loss, he would have beat him badly. Even in the second fight, Jones was doing great, and controlling the action, landing at will. It's just too bad he got caught with one. After getting KOd by Johnson, Roy is gun-shy. Otherwise, he would have beat Tarver the third fight.
Tarver is good, but nowhere near Jones.
you guys say rjj is better but tarvar spaked him twice. remember that james toney was having weight problems before the rjj fight, toney was nowhere near his normal self and rjj couldn't ko him, i think you have to say respect to tarver for his wins
Any fighter can land a lucky punch, ask Rahman. As far as the third fight, anyone can beat a scared fighter, and Roy could have won that. Good job Tarver, but you still aren't as good. Neither is Toney.Quote:

I'd buy some of that. Plus, another big factor is that Roy hadn't taken a clean punch in years. If you don't get hit, how can you tell if you can still take a punch? Roy not mixing it up, and staying on his wheels all those years, seem to have caught up with him. Back to the steroid thing, what about Toney? He hasn't been KOd lately, and I'm sure he has taken steroids more than once.Quote:

You're talking about 2 men with completely different body types and Toney was already walking around at 200lbs already. All the weight Roy put on for the Ruiz fight had to be aided with large amounts of steroids, which accounts for why he could lose 30 pounds of rip in a month.... You can't gain it and lose it that quick, not pure rip like he had unless it's from roids. Toney doesn't gain/lose rip, he gains/loses fat. With that HUGE melon of his I seriously doubt steroids would have the same effect on his chin, not to mention he doesn't get caught clean that often either. I've seen Jones take tooooooooooo many on the chin to naturally have a glass jaw. It was just a ironic that he developed this problem right as he fought the biggest loud mouth career..... Yes if someone talks that much S*** and knocks you out people are gonna veer away from what really happend. No need to analyze it - the guy was shooting his mouth off saying he was gonna knock him out and he did. Real easy to lose sight of things when it goes down that way :(
Bottom line, ya'll musta forgot :)
Tarver in his prime, had trouble with Roy past his prime. So Tarver wouldn't have beaten Roy. Roy goes for a left hook and Tarver moves and bends into Roy's right hands to the body. Tarver looked like he was scared.
when ever i say to people that lennex lewis only beat holyfield and tyson when they were past there prime they just say " the point is he beat them ". my cuz was a big fan of lewis's but after i showed him the holyfield v bowe fights he said that lewis wouldn't have beat those 2 had he fought them then, and he wouldn't have beat tyson.
so what i'm saying is tarver won 2 out of 3, making him the winner, the history books say tarver 2 rjj 1. as for all this talk of steriods, fighters get tested, if the test shows negative then theres not much people can say. if toney has been a long term user then its goner look bad to steriods coz james just gets fatter and fatter
I FEEL THAT FIGHTERS WHO TAKE POWER INCRESSING DRUGS SHOULD BE JAILED FOR MIN 10 YEARS, COZ UNLIKE OTHER SPORTS IN BOXING EXTRA POWER MAY MEAN SOMEONE GETTING SERIOUSLY HURT OR EVEN WORSE
Roy was slightly off and fading, but he had enough time to recover from the weight loss...His performance against Ruiz was one of the best i have ever seen.
He got knocked out...period
yeah he got caught with a lucky punch...when we know he wouldn't have even been there five years ago to get hit by the punch...Quote:

opinions opinions
could debate this shit till the end of time :(
I'm not saying it prooves he didn't take them. (he failed a drug test right?) but I could gain half a stone of muscle in a few months and I know jack shit compared to the people around Roy Jones Jr... ;)
yeah, im pretty sure he took steriods
he must of, he failed a test didn't he? I'm just saying gaining 8 pounds of muscle isn't hard on or off the juice. Roy haters fail to forget that he didn't gain 30 pounds of muscle and then you get all this shit spread around about him which every one starts to buy.
a 175 fighter probably weights about 10 pounds more on fight night than they do at the weight in... I'd guess Roy was about 185 at the end of a training camp before drying up to make a weight... you can only dry up so much safely, he walked around at over 190 pounds so he would of lost 10 pounds of mass slowly in his training camp but healthily.
he went into training for ruiz at 192 and weighed 199 pounds weaing a track suit so its safe to say he didn't really gain as much weight as people would say... to me he certainly didn't look that much bigger at heavy than he did at light heavy because most guys who gain weight for a fight like that put on nothing but bulk wheres with Roy it was dense muscle.
true rjj looked very good 2nd fight but worst came to worst and he got knocked out. since then he never recovered and he was too cautions of being knocked out.
hopefully he regains his composer and get back his rymthem.
He was great at one time, But those times are long behind him. He will probably get knocked out the nobody is is fighting in his next fight. That is if the guy is not intimidated by Roy and will let his hands go. Roy cannot take a flush punch, He probably never could.
prime vs prime I think it would be RJJ hands down......RJJ was as close to perfect as any boxer has ever been.....he didn't just win he dominated......remember him playing in a professional bball game before a title fight? on the same day..he scored something like 18 pts...and a KO!!! he was awesome!!!Quote:
