What about Riddick Bowe???
I realize he enjoyed the dinner table more than training camp and He was poorly mismanaged by Rock Newman when He reached his peak...But I wonder?? Then again He never fought Lewis as a Pro,never fought Tyson,Moorer,Morrison,Mercer,Etc..and of course going ape shit and kidnapping his family and jail didnt help and alleged brain damage .. Damn I miss the Prime Bowe he had all the tools to be something great!!! Was he just another mis managed Superstar that couldnt handle the fame and pressure???
-
Re: What about Riddick Bowe???
I agree he had all the tools to be an all time great - but his prime was short - even by the 2nd Holyfield fights he was no longer the same fighter!!
Would love to have seen Riddick Bowe V Larry Holmes
-
Re: What about Riddick Bowe???
Agreed - he had all the tools and somehow snatched failure from the jaws of success.
There was always some doubt as to his heart ever since his amateur days (that's why they had to work so hard to persuade Eddie Futch to work with him)
He could have been fantastic.
-
Re: What about Riddick Bowe???
A prime Larry Holmes would have destroyed Bowe the Bum in a heartbeat.
I always questioned his heart and his fitness.
-
Re: What about Riddick Bowe???
No, a prime Bowe was about as perfect as can be. Holmes was ok, but he fought cruiserweights and even got caught a couple times.
Bowe is one of the best during his prime....almost as perfect as Joe Louis!
-
Re: What about Riddick Bowe???
The Riddick Bowe who won the first Holyfield fight, would IMO, beat any fighter in history. ;)

:coolclick:, I have to agree on that.

Re: What about Riddick Bowe???
November 13 1992. the night Bowe hit perfection. he never reproduced that form again.

look at his record afterwards. he beat 2 relics in Ferguson and Dokes. Looked like he had just stepped out of a fast food joint to lose to Holyfield in the rematch. almost got DQd against Mathis Jnr, Sleepwalked his way to beat Larry Donald in a dire fight. Was out on his feet in third fight against Holyfield and should have been stopped. Beat a blownup cruiserweight in Herbie Hide and was losing both fights against Golota before the DQs. In fact his one impressive win was against Jose Luis Gonzalez. so to say he never reproduced that form again is a pretty reasonable statement

Re: What about Riddick Bowe???
riddick bowe was fierce. i was there that night he beat holyfield in their first fight. and i admit, he was never the same after that fight. i guess he got a bit too comfortable with living "the" life lol. He didnt train properly, under estimated opponets and rock newman was a joke. he ducked lewis by throwing the belt in the trash, granted, i wouldnt've fought lewis either at the time. especially if lewis was the last man to beat me lol. but i would've ducked him in a classier fashion than lewis did. although it was cool, for bowe to take on dokes and ferguson just to make a couple of defenses and thicken his pockets a lil bit. the last good bowe fight was the night he beat the cuban, gonzales.

Re: What about Riddick Bowe???
I thought the Holyfield rematch was a draw. It is a very very very hard fight to score. Riddick Bowe vert well could be undefeated

He sparred with Morrison once, And Bowe quit in the middle of it. His trainer Futch tried to get him back in there, But Bowe did not want any part of Morrison. He was scared of Lewis.
-
Re: What about Riddick Bowe???
Bowe just didn't want to put in the time to train for anyone. He started coming in his fights out of shape. By the time he was supposed to face Lewis, he had lost his motivation.
-
Re: What about Riddick Bowe???
He never fought Lewis because he was scared, and had no guts. Lewis would've KO'd him, and ended his career even earlier. He only fought Holyfield because he was much smaller.
-
Re: What about Riddick Bowe???
Yer its a shame, he really could of been something special! And IMO Evander was a better fighter then Lewis!

No it was because he was lazy. Don't know why if he was scared. Many felt that he had develpoed the tools he needed to beat Lewis since their olympic match-up.

Re: What about Riddick Bowe???
although im a big lewis had they fought round 92/93 time bowe would have beaten him. lewis was still developing as a fighter

because you let your love of food "outweigh" your love for boxing....You need to get back down to 235-240 and reclaim the belts....do that and the smack talking will cease....keep waddling around at 280-300 and this is as nice as it gets....

Bulls h it. Holmes had as good a jab as Ali. As far as cruiserweights, beyond Leon Spinks and Ossie, he fought the best around.

Re: What about Riddick Bowe???
Rock didnt get Bowe the big fights...weal know what happend against Holyfield.he was amazing but well never know if he could have beat other heavys of the time like Tyson,Morrison,Lewis

riddick didnt want any part of lewis, but morrison? prime vs. prime , i think , riddick would have taken tommys head off.

Re: What about Riddick Bowe???
Riddick Bowe don't get the respect he deserves like Larry Holmes.
But you can compare him to Hamed in that he was great but people knew he had the potential to be even greater. I have no doubt in my mind he would have shattered Marciano's record. He only has one loss anyway which could have easily went his way.

No he wouldn't. Two words, GEORGE FOREMAN. But if you guys wanna play, the "greatest for one night only" card, then that honor most definately goes to James Buster Douglas the night he beat Tyson. That night he was among the greatest HW's of all time.

golota is right behind the guy as far as dissapointment...Andrew had all the tools to be a top HW but lacked the heart and emotional stability.
